The Jewish Community of Lausanne and the Canton of Vaud (in French “La Communauté Israélite de Lausanne et du canton de Vaud” or "CILV") is a cultural association as defined in articles 60 et seq of the Swiss civil code, and is recognised as an “institution in the public interest” under the terms of article 171 of the constitution of canton Vaud. Its headquarters is in Lausanne. It is a member of the Fédération Suisse des Communautés Israélites (Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities, F.S.C.I.).

Its aim is to:

• contribute to the maintenance of the religious ethos and spiritual life according to the principles of Judaism (Halakha) and also to safeguard and defend Jewish interests

• enable worship to take place, foster the maintenance of religious customs, promote religious instruction and organise burials

• create and support all institutions of a social and religious nature related to Judaism

• participate in interfaith dialogue

! Ours is a community traditionally following the Ashkenazi ritual, comprising 600 families who have come to this region from many different parts of the world over the course of history. Once a month, our community celebrates a complete Shabbat service according to the Sephardic ritual, and also celebrates the services of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur according to both rituals; we use the main synagogue for the Ashkenazi ritual and another hall (depending on the number of worshippers) for the Sephardic ritual. If you go to our website at www.cilv.ch, you will be able to find out much about our community organisation and as soon as you become a member, you will be able to ask for a personal access code allowing you to visit all the pages on the site. We enclose with this letter a small welcome pack containing the following items:

The CILV community centre, the heart of our community, is located at Avenue Georgette 3. It houses the offices of the rabbi, the rabbinical delegate, the social worker, the youth manager and the secretaries. Moreover, it also features a restaurant which is open every day of the week at lunchtime, and in the evening if you make a booking. The restaurant also operates a catering service for individual customers and for companies, and can organise a wide range of private functions (meals, Kiddush, Bar and Bat Mitsvas, etc.) Our manager will be pleased to talk to you and answer all your questions. Lastly, the community tries to organise regular activities allowing all its members the opportunity to meet on an informal basis. These activities are centred on festivals such as Purim, Yom Haatzmaut or simply, at the start of the school year, on a large barbeque organised jointly by the Gan/Jewish school and the CILV. To help you understand the membership application process and to make it easier for you, this is what to do and how the process works:

! Fill in the application form and send it to the CILV secretariat in the reply-paid envelope.

! As soon as we have received your application, it will be forwarded along with the copy of your Ketouba (for married couples) or that of your parents (for single persons), to Mr Lionel Elkaim, our rabbi, who will examine your application and who may then get in touch with you.

! Following our rabbi’s approval, the chairman of our admissions body, Mr Edouard Argi, will contact you to arrange an appointment. The aim of this meeting will be to get to know each other, to answer all your questions and to finalise your admission.

! Following your admission, we will take pleasure in inviting you to a dinner at the community centre.

You may, of course, contact either of the two co-chairs at any time, and they will be very pleased to meet with you. Ours is a living and diverse community which tries to satisfy, as far as possible, the expectations of all its members. This can only come about thanks to a dynamic committee, but also and above all, to the work carried out by a large number of volunteers who commit themselves at all levels to the development of our community.

L'ALEJ (Association Lausannoise des Etudiants Juifs) est une association lausannoise ayant pour but de réunir tous les universitaires de confession israélite. Elle a été créée par des étudiants pour tous les étudiants des Hautes Ecoles de la région lausannoise (Unil, Epfl, Ecole hôtelière, Ecal, et autres HES). Nous organisons des évènements de tous types afin de satisfaire toutes les demandes. Les activités sont mises en place to t a long de l année en fonction d calendrier ni ersitaire

Chaque année un « Le brunch de la rentrée » est organisé afin de permettre aux différentes personnes de se rencontrer. Plusieurs soirées/activités sont prévues en fonction des fêtes juives alors q e d a tres ont po r simple objectif de se retro er et passer n bon moment ensemble

Nous organisons aussi des repas shabbatiques, en collaboration avec le Rabbin de la communauté, dans le b t d amener n aspect c lt rel et religie en pl s de la con i ialité d n repas de shabbat entre étudiants.

Nous proposons également des repas casher une fois par semaine à l'Unil afin de permettre aux ét diants d a oir n accès facile et pas cher à n repas casher C est a ssi ne occasion de pl s de se retro er a to r d n bon repas entre deux cours.
