Secondary 1 & 2 2014 has been a busy yet fun year for both the Sec 1s and 2s and it is good to take stock of some of the more memorable moments. Sometime in April, at the end of the monsoon season, the school had its share of ‘natural sightings’. Yes, all kinds of ‘crawlies’ found their way as we were so close to Nature. Nonetheless, the good sense of Pegasians prevailed. We championed for time-honoured values like Respect and Responsibility. One of our students, Aashika BT Amber, volunteered to lead the Sec 1s and 2s in the 3Rs programme: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The Sec 1s and Sec 2s got together to create art pieces with the message that all of us need to do our part to conserve and preserve the natural environment and also to respect all forms of life. The message to save the environment was cascaded from principal to the teachers and to all students. Project work was also aligned to the theme of an eco-friendly environment. Talents were spotted earlier in the year and students were given the platform to perform in the school, especially during Assembly. There were many good practices that the Sec 1s and 2s cherish. Charmaine Ng from Sec 2, for example, helped to generate a lively Art space in the canteen, thanks to her passion and commitment to the Visual Art. Kai Watarai also volunteered to share his origami skills with other students in the library. There are more examples of students stepping up to help lead the juniors during Fun Day after the exams: Hannah, Ashrina, Afiqah, Xin Rou, Xin Hui, Yik Fei, Kar Fung and Yan Hao, just to name a few. In different ways, the Sec 1s and 2s lived up to be good role models, upholding the school’s virtues which are an obvious strength in our school. Experientially, the Sec 1s and 2s had the privilege to go to Singapore twice. During Semester One, students went on a learning journey to the Singapore Science Centre and of course, the Singapore Art Museum and National Library for the second semester. It was good students get first-hand information that would help augment their existing knowledge of Art, Science and Technology. All said, the Sec 1s and Sec 2s are a lively bunch and an important part of the Pegasian community. At school, the students have both their fair share of fun and work. They had to sit for regular tests and exams for the core subjects following the Singapore curriculum, namely English, Mathematics and Science. Yet, they enjoy a holistic education, learning how to apply new skills for other subjects such as Art, Music, ICT, SOSE and others. The Sec 1s and 2s look forward to new and exciting programmes in 2015 in preparation for their IGCSE.

September 2013

EXCURSION TO SINGAPORE ART MUSEUM “I have learnt to be more observant, to work as a team and to exercise self-restraint in a quiet environment. The excursion to the Singapore Art Museum and the National Library, located in the heart of Singapore, has helped me to understand and experience learning first hand.”

Kuhan Raj, Sec 1

“After visiting the Singapore Art Museum and the National Library, I would like to search deeper into the meaning of Art and learn more about how artists depict their objects in a creative way. I’m intrigued by how artists play with ideas and colours.”

Charmaine Ng, Sec 2

These remarks about the excursion to the Singapore Art Museum and National Library sum up the benefits that could be gained from visiting places of interest in the Civic District of Singapore.

REPORT ON EXCURSION Twenty students and three teachers led by Mr. Alan Au Yong left Pegasus International School at about 8am on 20 November, a Thursday. It was a good time for bonding after the school exams and also a great opportunity to share ideas about learning. The journey to Singapore was smooth. There were no delays at either side of the customs and the best part is there was no traffic jam! We arrived at the SAM (Singapore Art Museum) at about 10.20 am. 5 groups of students were given an hour to locate answers to questions provided in the worksheets that were uploaded from the SAM website prior to the trip. Students had to think out of the box to answer questions such as: ‘Why do you think the artist created such a big photograph?’, followed by another question: ‘What difference would it make if the photograph were smaller’. Students have to use their imagination to answer questions like: “Imagine the same photograph but without people, how would that change your feelings about the artwork?” There were three main exhibitions held at different venues in the vicinity of the museum, namely ‘After Image’ which showcased contemporary photography of Southeast Asia, ‘Time Present’ which displays a collection of photographs from the Deutsche Bank Collection and the highlight – ‘Image and Illusion’ which is a series of video works from Yokohama Museum of Art. It was an excellent opportunity to explore how artists exploit Art and Technology to create amazing works, sometimes on a grand scale.

At noon, we were picked up from the SAM and the bus proceeded to the next venue: the National Library. Before visiting the Library, students had a quick meal at nearby McDonald’s. After lunch, Mr. Au Yong led the students to the National Library where he explained how and where to locate information on print and non-print materials. With the help of Miss Tan and Miss Nazzhla Teh, Mr. Alan Au Yong brought the group up to the eleventh floor to view the ‘Pioneers of Singapore’ book exhibition before showing where research facilities could be found. He also brought us to the Drama Centre located within the National Library where schools could book venues for the performing arts. All in all, it was an informative and purposeful visit. The bus arrived punctually at 2 pm and sent the group back to school at Bandar Seri Alam at about 3.20 pm. Year End Primary 5 & 6 It has been an eventful year for the Year 5 and 6 students! The Year 6 students, Ka Yikk and Wazirah, were busy preparing for their international Primary Six Leaving Examinations (iPSLE). Through sheer perseverance and hard work, they got themselves well-prepared for the examinations which were held in July this year. Besides schoolwork and examinations, the students also went on 2 school excursions together – beach outing at Tanjung Balau and watching Stickman Play at Singapore School of the Arts (SOTA). Cooperative and willing, the students have performed numerous times during morning assemblies. A small class of closely bonded students, the 4 students have grown to learn and play harmoniously together. They have matured steadily and developed into creative and independent individuals. The youngest member of the class, Narihiro, has shown good progress and improvements in his English Language. With the help of his fellow classmates, he has adapted well into the new environment and now regards Pegasus as his second home. You Liang, our final member, has added much interest and enthusiasm to the class. They certainly hope that the class will continue to grow and the class spirit to strengthen with time. Ms. Lum Primary 5 & 6 Teacher

Primary 3 & 4 The Primary 3 and 4 class has seen its ranks double since the start of the year. The new additions have certainly added to the cosmopolitan charm of this class. The class started with four students namely, Amirrah, Sarasa, Krishna and Yuei. We were soon joined by Ami, Chihiro, Felipe, Yu Han and Fabien. Unfortunately Krishna had to relocate so that left us with the eight students that we ended the year with. The events that stand out for the year are the two excursions we went on as part of the Primary cohort. The first was to Tanjong Balau where we had a picnic at the beach and made sandcastles. Although we did not swim, we had fun discovering the various flora and fauna of the area. We also paid a visit to the Fisherman’s Museum to discover more about the history of the area. We saw the ornate fishing boats that the local fishermen used which were also very colourful. In the second semester the Primary cohort made their way to the School of the Arts in Singapore and watched a play called “Stickman”. The students had an entertaining time and they were also treated to a visit to the Botanic Gardens. There they got to look at the amazing landscaping and touch trees which were planted over a hundred years ago when the Botanic Garden was founded. The class has certainly bonded over time and the students look forward to the New Year so that they can meet new challenges and grow up together. The class bids a fond farewell to Sarasa who will start school in Penang next year. We wish her all the best in her future endeavours. Mr. Chandrashagaran Primary 3 & 4 Teacher Primary 1 & 2 An end to the year 2014, we welcomed 4 new students in Term 4 and we bade goodbye to Cindy Li Sum Yu at the end. A lovable girl who we will dearly missed in 2015 by the whole class. Overall, Term 4 has been good to everybody. With students bonding and helping each other in the buddy reading programme. This has developed better verbal skills for some and for others, vocabulary skills. We hope to see more improvement in the following year. It’s not an all work and no play for the year 2014, we went for an informative excursion trip to Singapore and brought back knowledge and experiences to last us for the coming years. We hope to inculcate good values and study habits in all our students so as they can be well rounded, thoughtful and responsible members of our school and the wider community. I look forward to your ongoing support next year. Ms Carolyn Ho Class Teacher

Nursery & Kindergarten Report

It has been a wonderful year of discovering, learning and developing friendships for the Nursery and Kindergarten class. The children also had opportunities to experience and learn each other’s cultures. The year was capped off with an invitation to families to come for a meal at “Moonlight Café” where the children served local delicacies like Roti Canai and Nasi Lemak. The children also put up performances, a production of “A House for Hermit Crab” and a dance number, “Hot Potato”. We wish “All the Best” to our Kindergarten 2 friends, Yuri Eguchi, Misaki Takahashi and Shiori Kawai, who will be moving up to Primary 1 in 2015. Here’s to an exciting year of investigating, discovering and learning in 2015! Ms. Nadiah Nursery & Kindergarten Teacher Science Report This year we had a lot of fun with science at Pegasus International School. In the Science Laboratory we performed experiments weekly. To understand more about an eclipse and reflection, the Secondary One students did several experiments to study the effects of light. The Secondary Two students worked on chemical changes and learnt in five lessons what chemical changes are and their effects. The Primary Five and Six students worked with the concepts of force and the water cycle. On Wednesday, November 26th the students were very excited and enjoyed showing their parents some of the experiments we worked on during lessons. At the same time, all students had worked hard to prepare for their exams. They did several revision exercises based on previous exams from our KinderWorld sister schools and from top schools in Singapore. They have performed well in the exams, are improving in their grades and are making good progress. Ms. Dorneles Francis Science Teacher
