Maintaining the DOC Database
• Content of the NL-COP• Extracted from external information
systems – e.g. status and
positional information• Manually entered by DOC
personnel – e.g. assessments and
appreciations
• Content of Meta data• Classification of unstructured
documents in NL-COP terms• Manual classification time-
consuming and error-prone• Reliable automation possible?

In summary…• A national view on international operations requires
• a great number of different types of information sources• a great number of different views and perspectives
• The portal concept…• provides the desired flexibility, personalisability and visual integration• encourages incremental development (assuming adherence to portlet standards)• facilitates disclosure of legacy and off-the-shelf systems and components
• The structured part of the DOC Database can be used as a valuable index for the numerous unstructured documents
• Translator boxes are needed to automatically ‘feed’ the structured part of the DOC Database
VizCOP, 14-17 September 2004Towards providing a Netherlands national COP 10
Way ahead
• Research activities• find a lasting information model for the structured part of the DOC
database (2004)• determine the feasibility of sufficiently reliable, automated classification
and distribution of documents (2004, 2005)
• Development activities• incremental design and implementation (2004 - 2006)• design and implementation of the translator boxes• application of NATOs IEG-concept• exploit experimentation possibilities (JWID 2005(?), …)
