his locaion is undamenally wrong or our

according o a UC Riverside sudy in 2011
(htp://newsroom.ucr.edu/2717).
• We do not want the added trac and

Since is earlies days, emescal has
been a place o communiy, creaiv-
iy and innovaion. Park Day School,
an independen K-8 school, has been par o
he emescal neighborhood since 1982. is
year, he sevenh and eighh grade sudens a
Park Day School had he opporuniy o learn
more abou he emescal neighborhood as
par o heir Communiy Acion class. Beore
hey even sepped ou ino he neighbor-
hood, we asked hem o explore some big
quesions:
• What makes a community?
•
Who are the diferent stakeholders in acommunity?
• What does every community need?
e goal or our class was o ge sudens in-
volved wih developing projecs ha would
bes serve he needs o his communiy.
e discussions ha ollowed chal-
lenged heir preconceived ideas and allowed
hem o re-examine he assumpions ha we
oen make abou a communiy, as well as he
basic needs we can ake or graned. We sared our research by learning
more abou he rich hisory o he emescal
neighborhood. We looked old phoographs
o examine he way ha emescal used o
look and compared i o he way i looks o-
day. We used Temescal Legacies: Narratives o
Change fom a North Oakland Neighborhood
by local auhor Je Norman o learn more
abou specic evens and sysems, such as he
variey o ransporaion sysems ha exised
over he years, and how hey made an impac
on he developmen o he area over ime.
Aer we divided he neighborhood
ino our quadrans, sudens worked in
small groups o learn abou one o he quad-
rans in deph. While he suden groups
were ou exploring heir quadran, hey re-
corded heir observaions wih phoos and

hey had.
Wheher you live, work or play in
emescal, we each have a unique perspec-
ive and experience wihin he neighbor-
hood. In order o beter undersand hese
muliple perspecives, he suden groups
inerviewed neighborhood residens and business owners/managers. We even joined
he emescal Neighborhood Yahoo Group
o hear more voices rom he communiy.
We invied gues speakers o our class like
Suzanne L’Heureux o Inerace Gallery and
he emescal Creek Cohousing Communiy,
and Jessie Hemmons, ormer Philadelphia-

I was no surprise o hear how much
everyone loves his neighborhood, bu som
o our ndings surprised us. For example, w
learned ha here are a lo o dog owners inhe emescal neighborhood bu no conve
nien dogs park nearby. We also learned ha
many residens are concerned abou crim
and wish here was a more regular polic
presence in he neighborhood. While man
residens love he variey o resaurans in
emescal, many would also welcome he ad
