CUT THE CORD WITH THE WIRELESS HEADSET INTERFACE MODULE (WHIM)The last thing any Harley-Davidson® motorcycle rider wants to be is tied down. Now, owners of 2014-later Touring and Trike models equipped with Boom!™ Audio 6.5GT Radios can “cut the cord” with the advent of wireless Bluetooth® connectivity to the 6.5GT infotainment system.

To achieve this seamless communications capability, Genuine Motor Parts and Accessories now offers the new WHIM for both new 2018 models and for 2014-2017 Touring bikes. (Only 2018 H-D® Custom Vehicle Operations™ [CVO™] models ship with Bluetooth capability.) WHIM connects H-D Boom! Audio SPH10 Bluetooth Half Helmet Headsets and Boom! Audio 20S Bluetooth Helmet Single Headsets with bikes equipped with the Boom! Box 6.5GT Radio.

When installed, the WHIM is hidden from sight. It eliminates clunky, unsightly external wires and connections. The WHIM upgrade enables dual headset connectivity, allowing two Bluetooth-enabled headsets to be connected to a single module. WHIM also lets up to eight riders keep in touch via the 20S headset (up to four riders via the SPH10 headset) through its Universal Intercom protocol. Both headset models offer Advanced Noise Control™ to cut out background noise. And both also permit music sharing.

Using either headset, you will be able to wirelessly issue audible commands such as “Play Music,” “Call” or “Find Home.” The headphones, combined with the bike’s WHIM upgrade, let you listen to the premium audio system in stereo, hear navigation instructions from the GPS system and communicate with a passenger and/or other riders.

Dealer Installation RecommendedThe WHIM kit includes the wireless interface module itself, a connecting cable, a mounting bracket and screws. Touring models from 2014-2017 also require the Wireless Headset Interface Module Harness to complete the installation.

The WHIM installs behind the fairing and connects directly to the

Boom!™ Box 6.5GT Radio. The installation process includes removing the main fuse, the seat and the fuel tank. The main wire harness trough cover is removed for access, as

is the right-side cover, outer fairing and the fairing amplifi er, if one is installed.

Once the WHIM hardware is installed, the software needs updating. This requires downloading the latest WHIM and wireless headset software. Then, the Service Technician updates the vehicle and the wireless headset with the downloaded software by attaching the computer to each via its micro USB connector. In addition, once installed, the WHIM needs to be fl ashed using Digital Technician™ II, using a proprietary datalink port under the right-side cover of the fairing.

Note: Only a Harley-Davidson dealer can perform this part of the process.

Due to the complex nature of the hardware and software upgrades, dealership installation of the WHIM is recommended. Installation takes approximately three hours.

The WHIM upgrade and the wireless headsets it enables can bring you a new world of features and convenience. Stop in for a complete rundown of what the WHIM and wireless headsets have to offer.

Pairing a Wireless Headset with WHIM-equipped Models1 To pair a headset with the radio, press

the Home button, and then touch the Setup command. Make sure the Speaker/Headset setting is set to Wireless Headset mode.

2 Bring the wireless headset to the WHIM-equipped bike. On the Setup screen, scroll down to the Wireless Headset folder. (If it does not appear in the list, the component software is not up to date.)

3 Touch the Wireless Headset button, which brings up an on-screen button marked Manage Rider Headset. Put the headset in phone pairing mode by pressing the back button for about six seconds, until the headset says “Phone pairing” and the light turns from blue to red and blue.

4 Returning to the bike’s screen, select Manage Rider Headset, then select Pair Rider Headset. Once the radio recognizes the headset, an identifi er such as “Boom Audio 20S v1.7.5” appears on screen. Select the headset and you will hear the phrase “Pairing in process.” When the pairing process is complete, the screen refreshes to show the headset is connected and the announcement “Your headset is paired,” is played through the bike’s speaker.

Access the latest Boom!™ component software via h-d.com > Owners > Infotainment > Software Downloads.

While conventional lighting enhances the rider’s own ability to see, the Motor Company’s display lighting accessories offer customers a distinctive way of expressing themselves through motorcycle customization. The Harley-Davidson® Spectra Glo Lighting System lets customers light up the night with an eye-catching display of color.

Note: Some local regulations prohibit using colored or indirect lighting during vehicle operation on public streets. Check local regulations before installation.

Seven preset color zones

Yellow Green Aqua Blue White Pink Red

Distinguishing FeaturesThe Spectra Glo lighting system components are water-resistant, and are attached with a strong 3M adhesive for a bond that holds. You can choose from more than 500 color options! Simply press a button to select any of the seven preset color zones, and then dial in the desired shade. Spectra Glo lighting has three modes – solid, fl ash or fade. Its automatic one-hour shutoff feature preserves battery power, and the plug-and-play design requires no wire splicing, minimizing installation time.

ACCENTUATE STYLE WITH SPECTRA GLO™ LIGHTING

1 Lighting Controller Kit: Hidden beneath the seat and activated with a wireless remote, the controller acts as the hub for all Spectra Glo lighting components by synchronizing the color and mode selection.

2 Light Pod Starter Kit and Expansion Kit: Spectra Glo Light Pods provide a neon-like pool of color on pavement, or a splash of color on the bike. Each pod features three individual LEDs, and their connectors permit lights to be chained together or placed individually. A tough adhesive on the pods enables easy installation almost anywhere on the bike.

3 Fairing Vent Light: This fi lls the Batwing Split Stream Fairing Vent with a subtle glow. It mounts behind the fairing vent trim for a diffused look. The vent light’s low-profi le lamp array does not block airfl ow, so the vent maintains full functionality.

4 Stage I and Stage II Speaker Illumination Kits: These lights add a diffused neon glow to Boom!™ Audio speakers. The compact LEDs are installed under the speaker bridge, providing a pool of light across the surface.

5 Rider Footboard Inserts: Carved out of slip-resistant rubber, the inserts feature LED illuminated bands and a stylized, illuminated Bar & Shield logo with a sweeping band in the rear.

6 Passenger Footboard Inserts: These feature slip-resistant rubber inserts and an illuminated rearward-sweeping band that ties the look together with the Rider Footboard Inserts.

Engineered and Tested to Be the Best“Spectra Glo lighting accessories use solid-state industrial LEDs that are noticeably brighter than previous products,” says Senior Design Engineer Mark Noller. “In addition, some competitors’ controllers draw power from the system even when the lighting is not in use, leaving it vulnerable to complete battery drain. By comparison, Spectra Glo goes completely dormant when not in use, which decreases the likelihood of a dead battery.

“All Harley-Davidson‰ products go through a suite of testing that involves environmental, electrical and mechanical trials. These tests ensure that the materials and fi nishes we use are of the highest quality and, more specifi cally, that a product like Spectra Glo won’t interfere with the radio or other accessories.

“Also, we subjected Spectra Glo products to a water submersion test where they were placed under a meter of water for several hours. To further test for water resistance, we used the ‘Hogwash,’ a high-pressure wash that subjects the product to the equivalent of thousands of washes over a 24-hour period. Our thorough testing means that you can be assured of the quality of Spectra Glo products.”

The Installation ProcessThe fi rst step is to decide where to place the lights. Depending on placement and the number of kits installed, you may need additional wiring harnesses. Then, a Service Technician will calculate the system load to ensure it is less than 3000 mA.

Next, the Technician installs the Lighting Controller and ensures the controller and the key fob are properly paired. If you need to pair them again or the fob gets lost, we can do that for you.

Stop by the dealership for a demonstration or additional details. Let’s talk about how to add Spectra Glo lighting to your bike – and put a smile on your face!

Design (that’s Design with a capital “D”) is one of the key elements of Harley-Davidson®

products – from the motorcycles themselves to the incredible array of Genuine Motor

Parts and Accessories (P&A) created to customize them. To bring some exclusive insight

about the H-D design process to Enthusiast ShopTalk® magazine readers, we spoke to

Brad Richards and Ray Drea, two of the people who know it best.

“First and foremost, our designs are steeped in the voice of the customer,” says Brad Richards, Vice President – Styling and Design. “All 20 members of our Design Team are deeply immersed in the culture. When we’re not working, we’re attending events related to the industry. There’s something in our

designers’ DNA that picks up on trends. I guess you could call it ‘gut instinct.’ ”

The Making of a Motorcycle

The motorcycle design process at Harley-Davidson starts with a one-page document that describes the essence of the motorcycle. “It provides images of the motorcycle ‘in genre,’ as well as how the voice of the customer features in the design,” Richards says. “There is much discussion about the target customer and the hardware objectives. This ensures the clear alignment of our requirements and goals from the Original Equipment bike to a full palette of accessories.”

Then the Design Team puts together a “mood board,” a poster of images derived from customers, the environment, a specifi c material or even another consumer product – anything that evokes an emotional response.

Next comes a “sketch blitz,” when all members of the Design Team sketch their ideas and pin them to the wall. The team starts with as many as 100 renderings of a given model, and then narrows it down to one.

“After distilling the ideas into a single board, we get input from Engineering, Marketing, P&A, our Senior Vice President, Finance and others,” Richards says.

Then a team of fabricators develops a 3-D model. “Nothing matches the magnitude of what you learn when you move to this part of the development process,” Richards says. “Once the model is complete, we are confi dent in our design, and are in sync on what we need to deliver for production. We’re involved for one to three years, and then Design pulls out and manufacturing begins.”

Designing Premium P&A: The Burst and Defi ance Collections“When we designed the Burst Collection, we went for a premium, billet aluminum look, but we expected a relatively small customer base,” Drea says. When sales of the Burst Collection exceeded expectations, it indicated that there was a strong market for premium accessories.

“Based on that market feedback, we went on to create the Defi ance Collection,” Drea says. “The hook for this collection is pushing the shape. It’s a little more extreme. In addition, the Marketing Team suggested that we offer three different fi nishes. We have chrome for our core customer, and a rich tuxedo black for riders who want a sinister blacked-out look. The third style is black anodized machine-cut that has deep grooves milled into the surface to expose the aluminum below.”

Designed by Riders, for Riders“It’s essential to know who you’re designing for,” says Drea. “The majority of us at Harley-Davidson ride, so we are our own customers.”

One look at H-D‰ products proves that our rock-solid design process results in unmatched quality and visual appeal that is impossible to ignore. And now you know a bit more of the story of how our ideas evolve from concepts to fully formed, completely amazing products!

The P&A Design Studio“About a year ago, we created a satellite design studio in the P&A department,” says Richards. Ray Drea manages the P&A Design Studio. “He was a perfect fi t because he has a great depth of both brand knowledge and P&A, and he’s a fantastic artist with very high standards,” says Richards.

“I love the variety and fast pace of the new design studio,” says Drea, Principal Stylist. Opportunities for new products can stem from a customer need, a trend, a technology-based use, a future regulatory issue or the goal of exceeding customer expectations. First, we look at the functional side, the customer need. We’ve got to deliver on that.

“At the next level, we start thinking about the look and the WOW – the feature that sets it apart from the competition. For example, our Detachable Collection certainly delivers on the function of a backrest but its WOW factors are its premium custom look and its easy removability – without any tools – for a quick change in appearance, or to transform the bike’s functionality.”

Screamin’ Eagle‰ Pro Street Tuner and the Smart Tune PRO

TuningPerformance

for

When a band plays together, if even one of the performers is out of tune, it affects the entire performance. Something similar can happen to a motorcycle, particularly when making performance modifi cations. Every time an engine is modifi ed, it needs to be “tuned,” recalibrated, specifi cally for modifi cations that promise maximum performance and optimal effi ciency.

THE SCREAMIN’ EAGLE PRO STREET TUNER AND THE ALL-NEW SMART TUNE PRO TAKE THE MYSTERY OUT OF TUNING.

Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuner

Screamin’ Eagle Smart Tune PRO

Pro Street Tuner: What it Does and Why it MattersThe ECM constantly monitors engine operation in the Part-Throttle Cruising Range, which is the range where most riders ride. In addition, it allows for manual tuning of the parameters within part- and full-throttle ranges.

The Pro Street Tuner is compatible with all Screamin’ Eagle performance products, ensuring you get maximum performance and optimal effi ciency for your motorcycle. It provides users access to the calibrations that H-D engineers spent countless hours developing with the aid of a dynamometer and on-road testing to ensure peak performance in all conditions and situations. This includes testing for different temperatures, loads and drivability characteristics. Hitting peak horsepower and torque at wide-open-throttle is just one aspect of each calibration. We know you expect to use your bike every day and not make any concessions on the drivability while achieving peak performance. Screamin’ Eagle performance solutions, including proper tuning, ensures this is a reality.

Communication is Key When riding a modern Harley-Davidson‰ motorcycle, its Electronic Control Module (ECM) measures the air going into the engine, the exhaust coming out, the oxygen content in the air and even the air temperature. It then makes adjustments to ensure optimal effi ciency, and minimal emissions.

If that engine undergoes any performance upgrades, the ECM must be recalibrated to adjust the air/fuel ratio and other parameters based on the upgrades. Whether you change the exhaust, add a Stage II upgrade or make any performance modifi cations, the engine needs to be tuned. Neglecting to tune a motorcycle for performance upgrades can affect performance, fuel economy and emissions.

Performance tuning starts with the Screamin’ Eagle‰ Pro Street Tuner. Once the ECM has been recalibrated, those settings will be saved in the Pro Street Tuner.

• Additional benefi ts of the Pro Street Tuner are that it actually communicates directly to, and reprograms, the motorcycle’s ECM, rather than being a “piggyback” system that tries to fool the ECM by changing the values that the various sensors read.

• The Pro Street Tuner plugs directly into the motorcycle’s data port, so there’s no wire-splicing or under-seat hardware required.

Note: The Screamin’ Eagle Pro Street Tuner is for use with ’17-later XG, ’14-later XL, ’07-’17 Dyna‰, ’07-later Softail‰ and Touring models and ‘17-later Trike models.

Smart Tune PRO: Maximum PerformanceThe key to the Smart Tune PRO is the wide-band oxygen sensors. They can measure the exhaust output throughout the entire operating range, so the Smart Tune PRO can automatically tune to the current conditions, in both the part-throttle cruising range and the full-throttle acceleration range.

Once this system is installed, adjustments are made in real-time for all performance upgrades. Additional benefi ts of the Smart Tune PRO are:

• It ensures that the target air/fuel ratios are achieved every revolution. Since every revolution is measured and adjusted to hit the targets, the adjustment range that the module can account for is essentially doubled. This ensures that all the different combinations of intake and exhaust and bike-to-bike variation are completely within the adjustable range of the module.

• It automatically adjusts performance while riding, for maximum effi ciency in the part-throttle cruising range and performance in the full-throttle acceleration range.

• It enhances drivability in all riding conditions and for all combinations of performance upgrades.

• It is an excellent alternative to taking multiple test-rides or dyno runs to dial in the calibration.

• It can be used to squeeze every last bit of horsepower and torque out of the engine.

The technology built into Smart Tune PRO does all the hard work, so you can enjoy your motorcycle under all operating conditions. When the Pro Street Tuner is paired with the Smart Tune PRO, it’s like having an onboard tuning genius fi ne-tune your Harley-Davidson® motorcycle as you ride!

Smart Tune PRO Takes Performance to the Next LevelBase calibrations deliver the best effi ciency and rideability, and the best power and torque. The air/fuel ratio targets set in the base calibrations are a result of those countless hours on the road and on the dyno that the H-D calibration team puts in.

The Smart Tune PRO works in conjunction with the Pro Street Tuner. In other words, when you buy a Smart Tune PRO, you must fi rst have a Pro Street Tuner, because the Pro Street Tuner’s base calibrations are the starting point for tuning the engine. In addition, to operate throughout the entire throttle range, the Smart Tune PRO requires upgraded wide-band oxygen sensors. Wide-band oxygen sensor inlets come standard on the Stage I High-Flow Exhaust System for Milwaukee-Eight‰ engines. But when using the Smart Tune PRO with other exhaust systems, the M18 Oxygen Sensor Installation Tool is required to convert narrow-band oxygen sensor inlets to accept wide-band oxygen sensors.

• The Pro Street Tuner is designed to plug in, tune and then unplug from the motorcycle, but the Smart Tune PRO is installed permanently on the motorcycle.

• The Smart Tune PRO requires a wide-band starting calibration in the Pro Street Tuner to function.

The location of the Smart Tune PRO varies by model, but in all installations, it is out of sight and out of the way. Once it is installed, it does not have to be touched again.
