Good Luck to all our students taking their exams times 9th May 2016 Issue No. 05 Well done to Micheal O’Dowd Level 5 Liberal Arts and James Morrow Level 6 Health, Fitness & Sports Performance who helped the Monaghan minors win their first Ulster title since 1999 beating Tyrone in the final. Congratulations to the Year 2 Hairdressing students who completed their City & Guilds Unit 212. Students had to create an image based on a chosen theme. Taking inspiration from this theme, they then had to create a moodboard and recreate a Fantasy type hairstyle on their model. This really tapped into the creative side of hairdressing students and introducted them to a different side to the industry. FANTASY HAIRDRESSING GARY MCKENNA BOXING CHAMPION WELL DONE To Ryan McDonald L5 Games and Sarune Jasaite L5 Multimedia who have been comissioned to complete a website for Clones Famine Workhouse. CONGRATULATIONS To Chelsea Halpenny, Level 5 Liberal Arts who competed in the World Irish Dancing Championship Congratulations to Level 6 Health, Fitness & Sports Performance and MI Sports Scholar Gary McKenna on winning the Senior Elite Irish Third Level Championship against Darnel Laffan from Cork Institute of Technology. Gary will go on to represent the Irish Third Level team in the Haringey Box Cup from 17th - 19th June. The Box Cup is Europe’s largest amateur boxing event, which takes place in Alexandra Palace in London. Best of luck from everyone in Monaghan Institute Gary! ART & GAMING STUDENTS LAUNCH ANNUAL EXHIBITION Students from Level 5 Art, Craft & Design and Level 5 Computer Games Design courses are exhibiting work in The Market House, Monaghan until June 2nd. The exhibition was opened by Cllr Cathy Bennett and in excess of 70 people attended. On show is a selection of work completed during the year and a project commemorating 1916. The Art and Gaming courses collaborated on a game that focuses on the last seconds of Volunteer Michael Molone’s life. Another game on display is MIZ, a zombie populated creation of Monaghan Institute. Many thanks to the Monaghan County Council arts office for providing gallery facility, staff at Monghan Institute for their help and support and Éilís Lavelle who provided wonderful harp music for the event.

Congratulations to Level 5 Animal Care and Level 6 Animal Science on the success of their charity dog grooming day. Over €400 was

raised for Holly’s Horse Haven and MSPCA. The students would like to thank everyone who attended for supporting the event. Also well

done to Pat Fahy who was the winner of the Buried Tresure on the day.

On Wed 6th April MI Tourism and Travel students visited The Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. The Guinness Storehouse was recently named Europe’s leading tourist attraction at the prestigious World Travel Awards. The students enjoyed learning about the brewing process and Guinness advertising through the years. The Gravity Bar allowed a unique 360’ view of Dublin City. The Tourism and Travel course is now open for enrolment for September 2016.

winning Show Queen at the Tydavnet Show on Saturday 9th April 2016.

Students from Monaghan Institute QQI certified Level 5 Games Analysis & Design and Level 6 Computer Network Technology courses recently visited the European Headquarters of Facebook in Dublin. This trip, part of the work placement module of study for both groups, was a great opportunity for students and staff to see at first hand one of the world’s foremost IT organisations in operation. Director of Infrastructure Services at Facebook, Mr Niall Mc Enteggart was on hand to give a fascinating overview of the many products and services offered by the company such as Instagram and the fascinating Aquila WiFi initiative which is currently in development as part of the tour. The trip was a great success and much thanks is due to the staff in Facebook for their assistance on the day. Monaghan Institute is currently accepting applications for both Games Analysis and Computer Network Technology courses starting September 2016. Monaghan Institute took part in a nationwide event to mark the significance of the Proclamation of Independance on March 16th

2016.

Students on the Early Childhood Studies, Level 6,

Programme carried out practical Science Experiments as part of their course. These

experiments included properties of light and colour

followed by discussion on how to develop these activities for

young children.
