LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Family and Friends,

It's a great honor and privilege to serve as the President of our family foundation. I have been on the Board of Trustees at various times since the mid-1970's when we were just beginning our journey, purchasing ' and restoring the Boyd Tavern. And how far we have come!! If you have not recently made the pilgrimage to Boydton, you must come and see what we, as a family, have accomplished.

I would first like to thank our former president, Harold Gielow, for many years of dedicated service to our family foundation.

several years. She is the North Carolina Convenor for the House of Boyd Society. For the past two years, Joyce has brought the NC State marching bagpipe band to the Boydton Day parade.

On Sunday, we will have our traditional church service at the Boydton Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Russell Church Burchard will preside. Although now retired, he devotes his time to writing and to leading a small home church in Dawsonville, GA. For more information on Russell, go to www .godandpoiitics.net. After church, we will meet at the Tavern for our family photo and lunch.

Please mark you calendars for September 29th and return your response cards now. Our family reunion has been going on since the 1940's. It was originally organized by Billy Hill, some of whose papers are in our archives. Let's continue to strengthen our family ties by sharing in the fellowship offered at our reunions.

Looking forward to seeing you in September,

RECENT GIFTS DONATED TO THE BOYD FAMILY FOUNDATION

A book entitled The History of the War between the United States and Great Britain was given by Edwin Alexander Crowder in memory of his parents, Otis Bland and Nancy Crowder. The war started in July 1812 and ended in February 1815. This book was compiled by J. Russell, Jr. and printed and published by B. and J. Russell. The book was given to Thomas Goode Boyd from C. A. Boyd and Alfred Boyd.

A Ceremonial Cup and Saucer were given to the Boyd Tavern by the late Otis Bland Crowder, Sr. and Edwin Alexander Crowder and were delivered to the tavern by Ruth Crowder.

A copy machine has been placed in the Genealogy Room by Dr. and Mrs. James W. Rawles, Jr.

A spool crib was donated by Liz Boyd Rader. The crib was first used by Liz's grandfather, Armistead Jerman Boyd and his siblings. Later his three sons, Liz's father, Dr. Richard Armistead Boyd (deed.) and two uncles, William Barringer Boyd (deed.), and Robert Burwell Boyd used the crib.

Each of these gifts will help us preserve our heritage and is greatly appreciated.

Edwina Taylor Goddard of San Diego, California is the foundation of our genealogical records. She has researched each branch of Alexander Boyd, the Elder' s children down through the generations and continues today.

The family deeply appreciates Edwina's work for posterity. It represents an incredible amount of time, work, and expense to have accomplished this feat. We are forever grateful to you.

When Joyce Arcus traveled to Scotland recently, she visited the Dean Castle which is one of four Boyd Castles in Southwest Scotland.

The Dean Castle, originally called the Kilmarnock Castle is located north of the town of Kilmarnock in the county of Ayr. This was the primary seat of the Boyd Family for over 400 years.

The Law Castl~ was built in 1468 for Princess Mary, daughter of James II upon her marriage to Thomas, Master of Boyd, and later Earl of Arron. The castle is also called the Tower of Kilbride.

The Portencross Castle is a tower house which was the traditional place of departure from the mainland for the funeral boats carrying the kings of Scotland for burial on the Holy Island of Iona. It is the smallest of the Boyd castles but probably the oldest.

The Penkill Castle was built by Adam Boyd about 1490 and is located three miles east of Girvan, Ayrshire on the coast of Scotland near the birthplace of Robert Bums, the well-known poet. This castle is situated on Carrick Hills and was inherited by Spencer Boyd, a grandson of James Boyd of Virginia who rebuilt it in the 1850's. Eventually this castle was sold to Elton August Eckstrand in 1978. Eckstrand, deceased circa 2005, restored it by 1988 and lived there for 18 years before selling it back to the people of Scotland.

There is much more information about these castles and Elton A. Eckstrand online if you are interested. The Clan Boyd Society and the Historic Preservation magazine, vol. 44, Jan.-Feb. 1992, are just two of the sources which contain information about these castles.

In the Tavern in the genealogy room, there is a copy of a letter from E. A. Eckstrand written in 1992 to Mrs. Crocker, an employee of the Tavern at that time. The letter gives evidence of the Boyds moving to America. Eckstrand found a copy of a deposition in the Penkill Papers made in 1753 also giving evidence of Boyd moves to and in America. James Witherspoon age 70 swore this deposition in the county of King and Queen in Virginia saying he knew James Boyd when he first came to America in 1 721 and later married Mary Thatch, daughter of Spencer Thatch. James and Mary Thatch Boyd had at least three children, Spencer Boyd the eldest, a daughter, Ester Boyd and son, James Boyd.
