Greek churchman Johannes, Cardinal Bessarion.Around the same time, George of Trebizond made

a full translation accompanied by a commentarythat was as long as the original text. George's

translation, done under the patronage ofPopeNicholas V, was intended to supplant the old

translation. The new translation was a greatimprovement; the new commentary was not, and

aroused criticism.[citation needed] The Pope declinedthe dedication of George's work,

Regiomontanus's translation had the upper handfor over 100 years.

    Divisions of Spheres", 1138/9).[6]

    Commentaries on theAlmagestwere written by

Theon of Alexandria (extant), Pappus ofAlexandria (only fragments survive), andAmmonius Hermiae (lost).
