Dear doctoral researchers,

We are delighted to share our joy about the

latest news that the University of Bonn will

receive six Clusters of Excellence and is thus

one of the most successful universities in the

competition. Please find more info here. This

is not only a tremendous academic success

but also allows the university to apply in the

funding line ‘Excellence University’ at the end

of this year. We will gladly accept the

upcoming challenges which we will,

unfortunately, have to face without Dr Nadine

Chmura. Ms. Chmura who managed the Bonn

Graduate Center for the past year will leave

the University of Bonn in October. I would like

to take this opportunity to thank her for her

dedication and wish her all the best for her

future.

somit zu den erfolgreichsten Universitäten im

Wettbewerb gehört. Weitere Informationen

finden Sie hier. Diese Entscheidung ist nicht

nur wissenschaftlich ein herausragender

Erfolg, sondern erlaubt es auch, Ende des

Jahres einen Antrag in der Förderlinie

„Exzellenzuniversitäten“ zu stellen. Die

kommenden Herausforderungen nehmen wir

natürlich gerne an, müssen aber leider auf die

Unterstützung von Dr. Nadine Chmura

verzichten. Frau Chmura, die das Bonner

Graduiertenzentrum im letzten Jahr geleitet

hat, wird die Universität Bonn zum Oktober in

verlassen. Für ihren Einsatz möchte ich ihr an

dieser Stelle danken und ihr für Ihren

weiteren Weg nur das Beste zu wünschen.

This issue of our newsletter is the first

to be sent with the University of Bonn’s

new mailing list Sympa. We hope there

isn’t any difference noticeable but if you are

interested in the details, you can find more

information here.

We have relaunched the website of

the Argelander Program for Early

Career Researchers including our own

pages. We very much hope the new site is

more easily navigated and provides a better

overview of what the University of Bonn has

to offer for her doctoral researchers. We are

still working on the last details but please feel

free to let us know if you find any glitches:

Besides the more technical

developments, we are happy to let you

know that the new Promotion plus

program is online and registration is open (see

page 5). You can apply for last minute

conference funding (see page 7) and browse

further events (page 8) and news in this issue.

As Dr Holger Impekoven already

mentioned in the editorial, we are sad

to say goodbye not only to our

manager Dr Nadine Chmura but also to our

student assistant of two years Laura Wilson-

Bresenitz. This leaves the Bonn Graduate

Center Team currently slightly understaffed so

we greatly apologize that we can’t keep up

our service portfolio in full scope and it might

take us little longer than usual to reply. We

apologize!

The Alte Sternwarte ("Old

Observatory"), which is also home to

the Bonn Graduate Center, was

distinguished as "Outstanding Astronomical

Heritage" in September. We are happy to be

able to offer our Promotion plus workshops in

such a beautiful historical building (pictured

above).

In this issue, we will introduce some more

details on the ongoing doctoral research

pursed in Bonn, meaning all doctoral re-

searchers who started their doctoral studies in

the last reporting year or who have continued

their studies (see Figure 1 and next page).

We are looking forward to tracking the devel-

opment over the next few years. In order to

make the data collection more convenient and

efficient in the future, the Rectorate decided

this summer to introduce the HISinOne doc-

torate management tool. Thus, the doctoral

researcher administration and registration will

be carried out in a common system with the

administration processes for students. In addi-

tion to enrolling, doctoral researchers will be

able to easily register with their respective

doctoral office in the faculties and update

their data via the web-based tool. We will

continue to keep you updated on all develop-

ments.

Meanwhile, the preparations for the next re-

port for 2018 are now in full swing. The doc-

toral offices diligently collect all data required

by law in order to provide a comprehensive

picture of the doctoral student body and its

developments in the future. The data form a

valid basis for quality assurance and the plan-

ning of funding measures for young scientists,

for which we sincerely thank all those involved

for their commitment!

Laufende Promotionen umfassen alle Promo-

vierenden, die im letzten Berichtsjahr eine

Promotion begonnen oder aktiv fortgesetzt

haben (vgl. Abbildung 1).

Wir sind gespannt, wie sich die Zahlen in den

kommenden Jahren entwickeln werden. Um

die Erfassung in Zukunft komfortabler und

effizienter zu gestalten, hat das Rektorat in

diesen Sommer beschlossen das Dokto-

randenmanagement-Tool von HISinOne einzu-

führen. Somit wird die Promovierendenver-

waltung und -erfassung in einem gemeinsa-

men System mit den Verwaltungsprozessen

aus dem Bereich Studium und Lehre erfolgen.

Neben der Immatrikulation können Promovie-

rende sich zukünftig ganz bequem über das

webbasierte Erfassungstool beim jeweiligen

Promotionsbüro registrieren und ihre Daten

aktualisieren. Wir halten Sie an dieser Stelle

auch weiterhin über alle Entwicklungen auf

dem Laufenden.

Parallel zu der Einführung des Systems laufen

nun die Vorbereitungen für die nächste Mel-

dung für das Berichtsjahr 2018. In den Promo-

tionsbüros werden alle gesetzlich geforderten

Daten erfasst, um auch künftig ein umfassen-

des Bild über die Bonner Promovierenden zu

liefern. Die Daten bilden eine valide Grundlage

für die Qualitätssicherung und die Planung

von Fördermaßnamen für den wissenschaftli-

chen Nachwuchs, wofür wir uns bei allen Be-

teiligten ganz herzlich für Ihren Einsatz bedan-

ken!

Die Hälfte der 6.113 aktu-ell Promovierenden ist weiblich (50,9%) und ebenfalls die Hälfte hat vor ihrer Promotion einen Abschluss an der Universi-tät Bonn gemacht (50,6%, vgl. Abbildung 2).

Half of our 6,113 current doctoral researchers are female (50.9%) and half graduated from the Uni-versity of Bonn prior to their doctorate (50.6%, see Figure 2).

Je ein Drittel der Promo-vierenden ist an der Ma-

thematisch-Naturwiss. (32,3%) und der Philoso-

phischen Fakultät (32,1%) angemeldet. Das verblei-bende Drittel verteilt sich

auf die anderen fünf Fa-kultäten.

Nearly a quarter of doc-toral researchers come from abroad (24.0%), thereof three quarters from Asia (39.3%) or from other European countries (35.4%).

ner Graduiertenzentrums und seiner Koopera-
