Language Arts• Focus on the Common Core Standards• The Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) program is
broken into two parts: Skills and Listening & Learning. In the Skills strand, students learn how to read and write. In the Listening & Learning strand, students will gain the knowledge, language, and vocabulary that are essential for strong comprehension. CKLA connects engaging topics within and across grades, building knowledge and connected vocabulary for deep comprehension. These two parts, in addition to guided reading time, will provide the foundation for your child’s literacy.

Spelling• Basic skills taught: phonics, spelling rules, patterns,
word origins, prefixes/suffixes.
• Spelling is assessed and evaluated on an ongoing basis through classroom writing samples and spelling lessons.
• *The true test of spelling mastery is its transfer to and application in student writing on a daily basis.
• Weekly test correlate with unit readers.

Library:
• Students will visit the Library weekly to check out books and learn library/media skills. Books are to be returned each week on our scheduled library day (Tuesday).

Homework Expectations•Weekly homework will be assigned on Friday, due on the following Friday.
• Please look in your child’s Communication Folder. Note: Life happens - if you need an extension, please email me or send a note.
• Students are to do homework thoroughly and neatly. Parent and student are to both sign the homework cover sheet.
• Homework begins on Fri. 8/17
SchoolProcedures
School ProceduresCar Pick up:For the safety of your student and all of the students in the gated area, please stay in your car to pick up your student if they are in the gated area. If you park your car, please meet your child under the Ramada or in an agreed upon location
Tardy Students:If your child arrives to school when the tardy bell rings or after 7:45, an adult will need to park their car and walk their child into the office in order to sign them in.This is a state law new for the 2018-2019 school year.We are audited each year on our school procedures and we need your help with this. Thank you!

• Donations for the Health Office:– The Health Office is looking for clothing (shorts/leggings mostly)
and shoe donations.
• Friday Spirit Days:– Student Council is sponsoring Friday spirit days. Students are
encouraged to wear a Waggoner shirt (any color) or a blue shirt.

-Parties – Fall, Winter, Friendship, andEnd of Year party (more info
will go home)-According to district policy, homemade treats are not allowed. -If donating snacks/party supplies, please send in store bought items only.

• According to District Policy, birthday treats, balloons, etc. are not allowed.
• Party invitations may not be distributed on campus.
• Children will receive a birthday acknowledgment from administration, morning announcements, and myself.
