Además, he aprendido que Dios provee generosidad.

BEING A PASTOR OF SAINT JOHN PAUL II PARISH

When Bishop Conlon called me several weeks ago about be-ing installed as pastor of St. John Paul II Parish, my first reac-tion was, “What? Again?!” Jokingly, I said to the Bishop that this would be a record in the diocese. I would be the most installed pastor in the diocese of Joliet since Bishop Conlon came to the Diocese in 2011 – the very first installation he did when he arrived in the diocese was my installation as pastor of Saint Teresa Parish on August 28, 2011. Then, he would install me again as pastor of Saint Rose Parish on October 31, 2015, and as pastor of Saint Martin Parish the next day, November 1, 2015. And now, this Sun-day, August 27, 2017, Bishop Conlon installs me again as the founding pastor of Saint John Paul II Parish.

As I write this article, I just finished reading Canons 515-552, to remind myself of the official expectations under the office I am being officially installed. Just like the very first time that I read this chapter, I again felt overwhelmed by the immensity of the responsibility being entrusted upon me by our Bishop.

Six years of being a pastor has taught me a lot of things. It first taught me that God is actively working in and through the Church. Many times, prac-tically on a day-to-day basis, I see how God is using me and the people of the parish to accomplish His plan. Sometimes, the timing of events gets to be so uncannily well-orchestrated, I get goose bumps. Together with this, I have also learned that God does provide generously. His Divine Providence is manifested not only in the material support to the life of the parish, but also more importantly, the people that He brings into the Church also shows that there is a plan. Being a pastor also taught me to outline my priorities and goals as a priest, especially because the demand for the priest is so great. Finally, I have also realized that being a priest and pastor has given meaning to my life, and as I recommit myself to being the pastor of our new parish, I re-echo what I would be saying at the rite of installation – that I would vow to put above all else the care of souls as the reason for being here with you.

I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to Bishop Conlon for his continued trust and support. I will never forget the personal phone calls from him, just simply asking how I was doing through all the transitions that have taken place in our community. I thank the parish leadership team – the parish councils, finance councils, commissions and ministries, organizations and support groups, and most of all, the staff – of the three parishes of the past, and the new parish of the present. It has been per-sonally inspiring to be surrounded by many good people who are commit-ted to building our parish family together. Thank you to our parishioners who have so generously shown their love and respect, many of whom have showered me with words of encouragement and prayers. I person-ally thank my family, especially my mom Elma for all her advice and wise counsel, as well as my priest support group – Fr. Mario Quejadas, Fr. Dindo Billote, and Fr. Mark Cote, for their enduring brotherly care. I thank my priest mentors through the years – Fr. Santos Rabang, OSB, Fr. Proceso Barroga (+), Fr. Don McLaughlin, Fr. Tom Paul, Fr. Tony Taschetta, Fr. Joel Fortier. I thank my spiritual families – Nadhja & Bob-bie de Leon, and Wilma and Jun Salgado. And finally to all my friends in the various times and places of my life, particularly the Happy Pilgrims who have become special spiritual companions and friends through the years.

Someday, when I look back at this episode of my life, I hope to see that I have been faithful through it all, and those that follow would find in us reasons to believe and to be grateful. Please pray for me and our parish, that we may be the Church that God calls us to be in our time here in Kankakee. God bless the Church, God bless our priests.

In the spirit of St. John Paul II, Fr. Sunny Castillo

August 27, 2017 Jesus knew that Peter had the ability and the openness to God’s grace that would enable him to be a powerful witness. Recognizing him, jesus palced Peter as the rock on which he would build his Church. Like Peter, we each have a calling as stewards of God’s Gifts. We are to listen to promptings of the Holy Spirit and be prepared to step out in faith to fulfill it.
