What’s new for 2016
MVControls is excited to introduce two new suppliers to our portfolio, Wilo and Metasphere.
Wilo is a German manufacturer of quality pumping equipment, keen to build its profile in Australia.
Our focus for the near future will be Vertical Turbine, End-Suction and Split Case Pumps, which couple nicely with the new SynRM motors from ABB to provide an efficient, reliable solution for water transfer applications.
Also new to the fold is Metasphere, a UK based specialist manufacturer of telemetry equipment and monitoring solutions. The Point Orange RTU is ideal for network flow and pressure monitoring applications. It is fully submersible and with a five to 10 year battery life becomes a pretty much maintenance free telemetry solution, and a neat back-up for critical applications like sewer pump station overflows and reservoir levels.
We are also proud to announce our expansion into the irrigation industry through our wholly owned subsidiary, Hybrid Pumping Systems. Hybrid Pumping Systems is focussed on the implementation of renewable energy sources such as solar to large scale pumping applications that are currently reliant on diesel engines, providing growers with considerable cost savings.

AZTEC 600 FLUORIDE ANALYSERS
The ApplicationDifferent types of chemicals may be used in fluoridation processes, the most common being disodium hexafluorosilicate (Na2SiF6) and hexafluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6), both of which pose a risk to human health and wildlife if not properly handled.
The diagram shows a typical water fluoridation treatment plant arrangement. In this example, hexafluorosilicic acid is held in a bulk storage tank (1) within a bunded area (2). Prior to use, the acid is passed through an automatic dilution plant (3) to reduce its concentration and help simplify control of dosing.
From here, the diluted acid is passed to a separate tank, which holds around a day’s supply of acid. As a safeguard against overdosing caused by potential plant failure, this tank is only topped up once in any 24 hour period.
The dilute solution is pumped into the potable water supply by a fluoride injection pump (5) on the outlet line from the tank.
The sample to the fluoride monitor (6) is taken after the main supply pumps to ensure adequate mixing and to enable a representative sample to be taken. The pump speed is determined by the plant flow throughput and the pump stoke is controlled by the output from the monitor.
ChallengeAccurate dosing of the chemicals used to fluoridate the water can be further complicated by underlying levels of natural fluoride in certain areas. In these areas, the dosing of chemicals to the water supply will need to be adjusted to take account of the existing background natural levels.
To help maximise accuracy, the sampling point for any online monitoring instrument should be situated in a location where the sample is likely to have been sufficiently mixed.
Any sample must also be taken before the water is drawn off to the distribution network.
Given the potentially hazardous nature of the chemicals used in fluoridation, and the potential consequences of over-fluoridation, water operators may also be required to demonstrate that they have been dosing within the required limits.
The solutionABB’s Aztec 600 Fluoride analysers provide accurate online monitoring of fluoride dosing in potable water applications.
Incorporating a range of features, including high and low level alarms, the Aztec 600 Fluoride offers reliable, and accurate,
on-line analysis of fluoride concentrations, allowing immediate process decisions to be made to help preserve the safety of the treatment process.
By utilising the same common platform as the Aztec colorimetric range, the Aztec 600 Fluoride is able to store data on the fluoride dosing process. This data can be retrieved in a number of ways. A built-in Ethernet communications link with onboard web and ftp servers enables remote monitoring, configuration selection, data and log file access to the analyser from a web browser, whilst the option of Profibus DP allows access over a fieldbus network.
A typical water fluoridation treatment plant arrangement.
ABB PRODUCTS10 11
Achieving safe fluoridation through online monitoring
How it worksA sample is first drawn from the sample chamber by the sample pump. In some drinking waters, there may be a residual of iron or aluminium from the chemical coagulants that have been added during the water treatment process.
These metal ions can form a complex with the fluoride which can complicate the analysis.
To ensure an accurate measurement, the sample is therefore pre-treated with a chemical buffer reagent before it is analysed, which adjusts the ionic strength and buffers the sample pH. The reagent also contains a chelating agent which breaks up metal-fluoride complexes. This reagent is pumped into the sample line and is mixed with the sample.
The conditioned sample is next passed through a temperature block to raise the temperature and provide further mixing before being presented to the fluoride electrode.
The electrode output is converted by the microprocessor to indicate the direct fluoride concentration in ppm, mg/l, ppb, g/l or in graphical format. Finally, the sample flows to waste.
To help operators to verify analyser performance, the Aztec 600 Fluoride monitor features automatic two point calibration with separate high and low standard solutions. Calibration
frequency can be programmed to occur either weekly or up to four times per day.
Key features and benefitsThe Aztec 600 Fluoride offers a range of features and benefits, providing users with a powerful, accurate and reliable tool for efficient monitoring and control of fluoride dosing in potable water treatment applications:
• Improved process control Enables operational decisions to be made in near real-time.
• Enhanced process safety The Aztec 600 Fluoride’s built-in alarms help prevent incorrect dosing of fluoride which could otherwise harm human health. If the upper limit is exceeded, the monitor will automatically signal for the fluoridation process to be shut down.
• Improved process reliability Detect process failures before they affect the quality of the water leaving the plant.
• Process optimization for water quality Increased plant efficiency.
• Potential capital and operating cost reductions Reduced chemical and energy usage.
• Continual monitoring of remote or un-staffed sites Improved response times and reduced visits saving money and time whilst lowering carbon footprint.
• Improved reporting Analyser audit trail data can be used to assure customers and regulators of process efficiency and consistent product quality

Using a motor with the highest efficiency class together with speed control is a good start when it comes to minimizing your energy bill.
However the IE class only indicates motor efficiency with a sinusoidal supply at nominal speed and power.
This information is not relevant when calculating energy consumption in variable speed applications. Accurate calculations demand efficiency data for the whole motor-drive package and for the entire speed range.
Now – for the first time in the industry – ABB offers you the means to calculate actual energy consumption with a measured efficiency curve for the motor and drive package. Log the operating profile and energy consumption of your present system and calculate the energy consumption with the new IE4 SynRM package.
This time your calculations will be based on facts, not assumptions.
IE4 SynRM Motor highlights• Motors meet IE4 efficiency levels according to
IEC 60034-30-1 Ed 1.0
• Unprecedented reliability through very low winding and bearing temperatures
• Can replace standard induction motors – same power, size combinations
• Variant codes and mechanical construction based on the proven M3BP cast iron process performance motors – conventional yet innovative. Same parts, easy to source and change.
• No magnets, no cage – you cannot break what isn’t there
• Service procedures comparable to induction motors – easy to maintain
Ultra-high efficiency motor to cut the cost of runningThe new rotor has neither magnets nor windings, and thus suffers virtually no power losses. ABB has converted this advantage into ultra-high efficiency.
As a result, you get the IE4 super premium efficiency level, which means very low energy consumption especially with in partial load variable speed operation.
Superior reliability to minimise the cost of downtimeIE4 synchronous reluctance motors have very low winding temperatures, which increases the reliability and lifetime of the winding. More importantly, the cool synchronous reluctance rotor means significantly lower bearing temperatures – an important factor because bearing failures cause about 70 percent of unplanned motor outages.
Even if the bearings eventually need replacing, there are no magnetic forces involved – unlike in a permanent magnet motor – so the bearing change is as fast and easy as with an induction motor.

The Point Orange can also act as a Modbus master communicating over RS232 and RS485. In addition to the multiple configuration options the Point Orange offers local monitoring of battery voltage, cellular signal strength and ambient temperature.
The RTU offers a plug and play solution that minimises the need for additional site visits, with remote management functions including remote firmware upgrade enabling associated cost-savings. It can store thousands of records in memory for later retrieval by SCADA systems.
The Point Orange was designed from the outset as a self-contained, low cost fit-and-forget unit for use in harsh and hazardous environments in remote locations. Its design exploits mainstream technologies which help to minimise costs whilst at the same time ensuring reliability and a long product life.
The latest developments in low power technology are employed, allowing the Point Orange to derive all the power it needs (including sensor power, if required) from an internal lithium battery pack. This, together with an integral GSM/GPRS or 3G modem, ensures a long service life with low infrastructure costs.

MULTITRODE PROBES AND RELAYSSimple, reliable level devices
MultiTrode’s Probe is the most reliable and cost-effective level sensor available in the water and wastewater industry today.
• 10+ year lifetime
• Cost effective and virtually maintenance free
• Very low and reliable pump cut-out
• Unaffected by build up (fat, grease, sludge and foam)
• Reduces maintenance cost
• Intrinsically safe when installed with MTISB barrier
• Eliminates false readings
• Simple to install and maintain
• Cuts the risk of spills
• UL, ULC, CTick, and CE Approved
Why is it so Reliable? There are no electronics and no moving parts - which results in a long lifetime. That’s why it gets a 10-year warranty!
Why is it easier to install than other level devices? All you do is hang the Probe on its own cable into your wet well, using the bracket we supply. Installation is simple - any one of your technicians could do it in an hour or so.
What’s more, you install the Probe relatively low down in the wet well, so compared to ball floats it allows the well to be cleaned out more thoroughly. That means less debris build-up, odours and pump clogs.
How does it work? The Probe works by using the conductive properties of the water itself to complete a circuit with a controller. It’s mounted near the inflow,
allowing the turbulence to keep it clean. Even if a build-up does occur it’s usually conductive (in wastewater) and so the Probe keeps right on working.
If cleaning is required the Probe is simply pulled through a squeegee that is part of the mounting bracket.
