THE CALL TO Orland Park
page 2
The breeze was cool at the May 13 ribbon-cutting ceremony, but the sun was bright enough to warm the 100 people gathered under the portico at Thomas Place Orland Park, a new community that will make quality senior living affordable.
Providence Board Chair Arnold Koldenhoven opened the ceremony with a prayer of thanks for the vision to serve seniors, and expressions of gratitude for the design, construction, and financing details that made the vision reality.
Mary Kenney, spoke on behalf of Governor Quinn, expressing his appreciation for the anticipated economic impact as well as the “human impact” of the project. Congressman Bobby Rush brought comments as well
Thomas Place is elegant and welcoming, and the location is convenient to shopping, dining, and other Orland Park highlights. John Murray Jr., a long-time citizen of Orland Park and new resident of Thomas Place, says, “It’s a beautiful building. I’m just glad to be here.”
Providence continued the open-ing two days later by inviting the 98 participants of the “Pastors Masters” golf outing to enjoy lunch at Thomas Place. Warmer weather gave them the chance to experience lunch out-doors, on the Thomas Place patio.

THE CALL TO Homer Glen
The rumble of bulldozers and the orange spatter of pylons and construction netting testify to the progress being made on the Victorian Village campus. If construction remains on schedule, by next year, in place of an empty hole and mounds of dirt, three home-like buildings will form the Victorian Village Health & Wellness Center, the first of its kind in Illinois.
The Center’s two smaller buildings will each house 10 people with skilled nursing needs. Each resident will have a private room, and those 10 private rooms will surround a great room where the kitchen, dining room, and living room are located and where community life happens.
The third building will be a two-story house with 15 private rooms on each floor. Primarily oriented toward rehabilitation and short-term stays, this building will have space for therapy programs, yet it will feel very much like home.
Victorian Village is excited to expand the range of services they can offer on campus — services that residents have
been looking forward to for years. And the homelike design of the Victorian Village Health & Wellness Center has been proven to result in higher satisfaction levels among family, residents, and staff.

THE CALL TO St. John

The same architecture firm that designed the Victorian Village Health & Wellness Center is applying that vision to a new plan for our St. John property. We hope to have zoning approvals in place by the end of June. Providence is trying to determine if it will be feasible for the planned Independent Living building to be a rental community without entry fees.

SOUTH HOLLAND Completing Two Generations of Caring
page 5
The ministry now known as Providence Life Services was not even a decade old when it merged with Holland Home in 1969. Our
young, energetic vision gained not only new services and new clientele, but also a rich history — for
Holland Home had already been offering retirement living to local seniors for 55 years by that time!
The current Holland Home was built to replace a smaller facility located in the Roseland area of Chicago. A skilled nursing building — Rest Haven South — was added to the South Holland campus three years later. For over two generations, these facilities served thousands of residents, hired hundreds of employees, and provided millions of dollars’ worth of benevolent care.
But after months of strategic long-range planning and a thorough review of the organization’s fiduciary responsibilities, the Providence
Life Services Board of Directors and Board of Governors both unanimously reached the difficult decision to divest ownership of the South Holland senior living community.
The Providence Board required a number of assurances during discussions with the new owner. As part of the terms of our agreement, the new operator will:
- Continue the discounted and free care currently being offered to existing residents on campus
- Continue on-site spiritual care
- Allow us to continue Home Health from the South Holland site
For the past 40 years we have provided quality services and an exceptional lifestyle to seniors in South Holland. It has been an honor to serve them. We believe the community is in good hands, and we look forward to continuing ministry in South Holland through our home care division, Providence At Home (see story, next page).

PROVIDENCE AT HOME
20 Years of Care at HomeIn the 1990s, healthcare at home was still a new idea, but Providence recognized it as a risk worth taking in order to provide quality Christian care to people who need it. In 1993, we formed our first home healthcare division, and in 1994, they were licensed by the state of Illinois.
That division, now known as Providence At Home, meets a need for nursing services, physical therapy, education, personal care services, and other forms of help in people’s homes. Today Providence At Home serves people in Illinois and Indiana — in their own homes, in our skilled nursing communities, in Providence retirement and assisted living venues, wherever needed. In many cases, the need is short-term, following a hospital stay, for example. For other people, the need is ongoing — help with laundry, or meal preparation, or errand-running. In all cases, Providence At Home gives patients and their families peace of mind and the support they need to safely remain in their homes.
In an age when trust is something we can’t take for granted, Providence At Home is earning people's trust every day. Not only
do they offer quality technical skills and knowledge, but they also combine that with intentional ministry.
The Providence At Home office will continue to be located on the first floor of the Holland Home building and will continue to serve
people in South Holland as well as most areas in Metro Chicago.

PROVIDENCE CHAPLAINS
Professional Spiritual Care
Many residents at Providence communities have expressed appreciation for the “Christian atmosphere” they enjoy. Bible studies, prayer meetings, and church services fill our Activity Calendars! Even more important, Providence communities benefit from the prayerful attention of designated chaplains. These men and women provide spiritual, religious, and personal guidance to residents, family members, and employees.
Our chaplains recognize the special needs of seniors — health issues, family issues, and the stress of significant transitions are a struggle for many seniors. And helping people prepare for the end of life is a unique
challenge and privilege. Please uphold our chaplains in prayer, and when you see them in the hallways, take a moment to thank them for their faithful ministry!

HELPING SOCIAL WORKERS UNDERSTAND DEMENTIAPeople with dementia are more frequently hospitalized than other seniors, explains Linda Schutt, Director of the Providence Research & Education team. Not only does confusion make them more likely to have accidents, but their impaired ability to communicate makes it difficult to express needs. As a result of the increase in dementia diagnoses and hospitalizations, social workers at hospitals find themselves working with more and more dementia patients. To help them understand these patients, and communicate with them more effectively, Linda gave a presentation to social work staff at Little Company of Mary hospital on May 16, “Understanding the Language of Dementia.”
