Bound, Part 3: Religion Senior Pastor Mark Wilkins Sermon Notes
We’re talking about this weird concept of FREEDOM, and our struggle to be free.
And we have a story about a woman who (literally) has her back to the wall needing
. “The scribes and the Pharisees brought a wom-
an who had been caught in adultery…” But freedom from what? Her
; “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adul-
tery.”
Her shame; her ; her ; And one more thing:
“Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”
But these aren't just any rules, these are .
“Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?”
Because in the end religion is always ALL ABOUT . And when the
reality of sin runs up against the rules of ,
someone inevitably ends up . But Jesus doesn't
just offer her a new religion, He offers her a : “Let any-
one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
He offers her : “Jesus straightened up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are
they? Has no one condemned you?’ She said, ‘No one, sir.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I con-
demn you…’ ”
And then he offers her one more thing: : “Go your way, and from now on
not sin again.”
Where religion only bound her to hurt, , regret, Jesus offers her some-
thing radical: a new (Romans 8:1-2)
Where religion is all about “ ”, a relationship with Jesus is all about
forgiveness and .
Where religion is all about your being “ ”, a relationship
with Jesus is all about you being irrationally .
Where religion is all about and OBLIGATION, a
with Jesus is all about getting FREE. (John 8:36)
FREE to love as we have ; FREE to serve as we have
; FREE to truly be ALIVE again IN HIM!
So what does that mean? It means God cares more about than .
God cares more about than .
God cares more about giving than handing out
.
God cares more about
than doing , and so should WE!
Maybe the church of Christ should be less about doing religion better and more about
proclaiming ; forgiveness; to a world .
