Anna’s story: I am 87 years old and a four-time cancer survivor who lives in Blawnox. I could no longer drive and couldn’t get to doctor appointments, cancer treatments and check ups or get to the store to buy groceries. I read in our church bulletin about Free Rides for Seniors and called the O’Hara township office of NHCO to find out if I could use the program. I started riding the shuttle within days and felt so independent once again.

I could get to doctors, the bank, shops and anywhere I needed to go without feeling like I was putting anyone out. I’ve made friends with other passengers and the volunteers

feel like family. I know when I need to get out and about, I can count on the shuttle and volunteers to get me where I need to go safely, on time and with a smile. - Anna Bates, shuttle rider

The first Free Rides for Seniors ten-passenger shuttle began operating May 5, 2005. Since that inaugural trip and as of October 1, 2016, this NHCO

program has provided 679 seniors, age 60 and older in the Sharpsburg, Aspinwall and Blawnox area, 55,811 rides. Seniors go to medical appointments, medical

treatments, physical therapy sessions, dentist appointments, pharmacies, grocery shopping, holiday shopping, banks, hair dressers and even to the movies and to

meet friends for lunch. This shuttle is staffed by a team of more than 40 dedicated and compassionate volunteers and runs Monday through Friday in the lower Freeport Road area.

Funded in large part by UPMC St. Margaret Foundation, along with the Allegheny County Department of Economic Development, Free Rides for Seniors provides a much-needed service to seniors who have limited affordable, accessible transportation options and otherwise would be unable to access preventive and necessary medical care and to purchase food for healthy nutrition.

IN SERVICE OF SENIORS

185 seniors received 5,817rides on our Free Rides for Seniors Shuttles, in partnership with ST. MARGARET FOUNDATION

CELEBRATING A SECOND SHUTTLE FOR SENIORS

From top: Anna Bates is thrilled to be able to get to her appointments and meet new friends on the Free Rides for Seniors shuttle. Riders celebrate 11 years of service for the first Free Rides for Seniors Shuttle. Young volunteer siblings Nathan and Celeste Yeske visited seniors during Smile Week and brought Smile mugs.

The first shuttle was such a huge success that a second ten-passenger shuttle was added in October 2015! The second shuttle serves seniors in need of affordable, accessible transportation for medical appointments and food shopping in neighboring communities along the Route 28 corridor, including Brackenridge, Tarentum, Natrona Heights, Springdale and Cheswick two days a week; Millvale and Etna two days a week; and Oakmont and Verona one day a week. As of October 1, 2016, our second shuttle has provided 837 rides to 69 seniors.

Both shuttles help to fill a growing transportation gap in our community. They help to ensure that seniors get to important medical appointments, to the pharmacy, and to the grocery store.

Just as importantly, the shuttles help seniors remain independent, active and engaged in the community, reducing social isolation and filling the void that often is left when family members and friends are deceased, work, move away or are unable or unwilling to help.

Our Free Rides for Seniors shuttles have become an integral part of the lives of many seniors and a vital addition to the existing transportation network in our communities.

577seniors remained safe and independent in their own homes thanks to In Service Of Seniors volunteers

COMMUNITY AUTO

COMMUNITY AUTO makes vehicle ownership affordable to low-income

working people in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.

Community Auto accepts vehicle donations and, after needed repairs, sells them at below-

market value to working people who need a car to get to work.

Purchasers also receive a valid Pennsylvania inspection sticker, a one-year AAA+ membership, a two-year powertrain warranty, gas cards and new car seats for children thanks to a grant from

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield.

We have partnerships with organizations and congregations serving Allegheny, Butler, Beaver

and Washington counties.

UTILITY & EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE

On Mother’s Day, May 8, 2016, a fire swept through eight row houses on Sample Street in Millvale, displacing seven families and leaving twelve adults and four children homeless. NHCO and several partners (including

the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Allegheny Link, the United Way, the Department of Human Services - Behavioral Health, Thrivent and the Urban League) provided services to those families.

Within days, NHCO had assessed all affected families for initial needs and distributed $3,360 in in-kind assistance. As recovery progressed, NHCO provided families with employment readiness and referral services, and additional financial assistance that covered housing (rent, security deposits), utilities, furniture and appliances; and gift cards for transportation, food, clothing and miscellaneous needs.

Abby and her young son, Ian, lost their home and all their belongings. Abby moved in with coworkers but needed to find stable housing soon. Emotionally exhausted, she struggled to establish stability for herself and her son. She attended a Community Help event sponsored by social service agencies and received gift cards and vouchers for food, clothing, shoes, toys and household goods. Within two months, she found safe, permanent housing, and thanks to donations, NHCO could assist her with a financial grant for a security deposit, first month’s rent, additional food and other necessities. Abby’s outlook has improved greatly. Ian is happy to have his own room and be enrolled in school. In a recent e-mail Abby shared, “Really, it’s just nice to have a home again.”

DISASTER RELIEF HELPS THOSE IN CRISIS

Another family, Amber and Aaron Manuel, had never heard of NHCO. After the fire, they had to find a home, keep their children, Aaron, Jr. and Athena, in their schools and replace everything from birth certificates to bedroom furniture. They learned to navigate a system they never before needed to navigate.

“There are people who really want to help people in need and genuinely care about other people’s well-being,” Aaron says. When the Manuels received help beyond what they needed, they “paid it forward” to help other survivors.

A catastrophic event can strike at any time. NHCO believes that every family who endures a personal

disaster should benefit from the generosity of “People Helping People” and for that reason established the

Disaster Relief Fund years ago. The small amount that was in that fund on Mother’s Day allowed NHCO to provide short-term, immediate assistance as we waited and hoped for additional donations. NHCO was able to provide assistance to the families due to the generosity of donors who answered the call when neighbors were suffering.

The Manuel family is settled into their new home after losing their house and belongings in the Mother’s Day fire in Millvale. The community came together to support all of the families affected.

AWARDS and ACHIEVEMENTS

19

Former NHCO client Bharat Rai received the Self-Sufficiency Award from the Community Action Association of Pennsylvania. Bharat and his family sought sanctuary in a Nepalese refugee camp from the oppression and violence in Bhutan. In 2012 they were awarded refugee status in the United States. NHCO was able to help, and today, Bharat is free from subsidies, has a balanced budget and sends money to family still in the refugee camp. He has been employed full-time

since 2012 and is taking classes to become a nurse. Bharat plans to start a cross-cultural educational program for families in his

neighborhood. Bharat shares, “Our North Hills neighbors were with us when we needed them most. Now, we’re in a position to help our neighbors and other people in need.”

Volunteer Gary Brandenberger received the Jefferson Award for his ongoing dedication to serving families and helping staff in the NHCO Millvale office. Gary’s faith and his dedication to those less fortunate inspire everyone around him.

Mother-son volunteer/donor team Dolly and Justen Bucek received the Jefferson Award for their unique efforts in, and tireless dedication to, providing food to our three food pantries.

Volunteer Joyce Rabinowitz was honored with WESA 90.5’s People Making a Difference Award. Joyce has served in several capacities at NHCO, usually as a receptionist. She is incredibly knowledgeable about NHCO’s programs, and her professional nursing background enables her to empathize with people struggling with difficult issues.

Volunteer Elaine Hatfield was nominated for United Way’s Good Neighbor Individual Volunteer Award. Elaine has been a long-time volunteer at NHCO in many capacities, including, but not limited to, our In Service of Seniors program (in which she has provided hundreds, if not thousands, of services), North Boroughs office team and our Speakers Bureau.

Board member Tom Baker received the 2015 Indiana University of Pennsylvania Young Alumni Achievement Award. The award honors young alumni who have achieved a level success in their chosen profession worthy of honor and distinction by their alma mater.

NHCO’s Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Garden received the Good Neighbor Award from Allegheny Financial Group, a financial planning and investment management firm. The award included $1,100 to be used toward garden expenses and general operating expenses.
