    Matthew 7:1-5

Do not judge, or you too will be

judged. 2 For in the same way you

judge others, you will be judged, and

with the measure you use, it will be

    measured to you.

3 Why do you look at the speck of

sawdust in your brothers eye andpay no attention to the plank in your

own eye? 4 How can you say to

your brother, Let me take the speck

out of your eye, when all the time

there is a plank in your own

eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the

plank out of your own eye, and then

    What kind of judgment JesusCondemned?

Judging when one is blind to his or

    her faults (Matt.7:3-5)

    Judging without mercy- (Luke 6:36-37)

    Luke 6: 36-37

(36 Be merciful, just as your

Father is merciful. 37 Do not

judge, and you will not be

judged. Do not condemn, and you

will not be condemned. Forgive, andyou will be forgiven.)

The Lord is here condemning the

    spirit of censoriousness, judging

    harshly, self-righteously, without

mercy, without love, as also theparallel passage (Luke 6:36-37)

    clearly indicates.

    James warned against making

    judgments without mercy James2:13

    (13 because judgment without

mercy will be shown to anyone whohas not been merciful. Mercy

    triumphs over judgment.)

    If we make judgments without

showing mercy, then no mercy will

be shown when we are judged!

The point of judgment about which

Jesus is referring is when the one

judging has a fault within his life

bigger than the fault in the life of theone whom he is judging. So this

person is being a hypocrite in

judging. That is the kind of judging

    that Jesus is condemning.

    Righteous Judgment

    John 7:24

    Judge not according to the

    appearance, but judge righteous

    judgment.

So there you have Jesus sayingdirectly to judge righteous

    judgment and therein lies the

    difference between the two.

    How do we render righteousjudgment?

    1. Judge our selves first

based on the teachings and words

of Jesus (We will be judged by

Jesus words and so we must liveby them and judge ourselves by

them each and every day of our

    2. Judge based upon the word of God

(Remember, when we judge in thismanner, we are not judging

someone, but the word of God is

    judging.)

    3. Render judgment with mercy

Let mercy and love temper our

    judgments.

    JESUS IMPLIES THERE ARE

    TIMES WHEN WE MUSTMAKE JUDGMENTS!

It is after we have corrected our

    own faults Matthew 7:5- You

hypocrite, first take the plank out of

your own eye, and then you will see

clearly to remove the speck from

    your brother's eye.

Yes- if it is a righteous judgment

    We, as Christians, have obligations

to judge certain situations. Jesustaught us to do this in regard to

false teachers, people who are not

living morally, and those who have

    proven themselves unworthy of the

    gospel.

No- if it is a hypocriticaljudgement

Jesus also taught us not to judge

    inappropriately. We should not

    judge hypocritically. We should not

    judge unrighteously, and we should

    not judge in a condemnatory

    fashion.
