Re: Recommendations for Spanish 3 and Spanish 4 textbooks
Due to the age of the current Spanish 3 and 4 textbooks, a committee consisting of the six current
Spanish 3 and 4 teachers from SLHS and SLEHS was organized to conduct a book study. The
purchase of new materials for the Spanish 3 and 4 courses will also help to align the upper level
Spanish curriculum with the curriculum in AP Spanish.
The committee seriously considered three textbook series. Teachers on the committee carefully
examined the books’ student and teacher materials, including online resources. They looked
closely at features such as: readability, quality of images/diagrams, grammar and vocabulary
topics covered, relevance of cultural information, video and audio sources, and alignment with
the AP themes. The committee also determined whether the texts met with the expectations of
South Lyon Community Schools and were instructionally appropriate for the varied abilities of
the students expected to be enrolled in these courses.
After the committee evaluated the materials, students evaluated the two series preferred by the
committee. The results of the student surveys showed that the students preferred the same series
as the teachers. Once a consensus was reached on which text to purchase, several teachers
piloted lessons. Aspects of the student and teacher resources that resonated with the teachers
were the number of current reading and audio resources available as well as up to date cultural
information. The online resources such as the workbook and videos were also of interest.
Student responses to the pilot lesson(s) were very positive as well. The students enjoyed reading
and listening to excerpts about the use of technology in Spanish speaking countries. They
enjoyed comparing and contrasting the use of various social networks in Spanish speaking
countries with their own use here in the United States.
Based on the teacher review of the materials and feedback from the pilot lessons, the committee
is recommending implementing the new books over the course of two years. The Spanish 3 and
4 Textbook Study Committee is recommending the purchase of Descubre 2 (Vista 2017) for
use in Spanish 3 beginning in the 2016-2017 school year and Descubre 3 (Vista 2017) for use
in Spanish 4 beginning in the 2017-2018 school year.

l. CURRENT TEXTBOOK
Spanish III We are currently using books from the Ven Conmigo series. We use sections of both the Level 2 and Level 3 books as well as supplemental materials we have created.
Title: Ven Corunigo Publisher: Holt, Rinehart and Winston (Harcourt) Authors: Nancy Humbach and Dr. Oscar Ozote Edition Date: 2003
Spanish IV We are currently using books from the Spanish for Mastery series as well as supplemental materials we have created.
Title: Spanish for Mastery 3: Situaciones
Publisher: D. C. Heath and Company Authors: Jean-Paul Valette, Rebecca M. Valette and Teresa Carrera-Hanley Edi tion Date: 1988
2. REASONS FOR CHANGE
There are several reasons we are requesting a change in textbook.
One of the main reasons is that the textbooks we are using are very outdated.
-Spanish for Mastery has no audio or visual materials for building listening or cultural competency skills.
-Ven Conmigo has supplementary materials on VHS which is difficult to use.
-The cultural references are all to people or events the students cannot relate to.
-Much of the vocabulary is outdated (VCR, answering machine, pay phone).
-There is no integration of technology.
-There are not many authentic materials (reading or audio).
Another reason is that our current books do not line up with the expectations of the AP course. They are lacking in reading activities, audio activities and current culture.
3. CRITERIA FOR NEW BOOKS
We were looking for a book with a variety of authentic materials, a strong relationship to the AP themes, and updated technology components.
Please see the attached forms that were filled out by the committee as well as some student volunteers.
Both print and online resources were evaluated.
4. REVIEWED MATERIALS
We reviewed 3 sets of textbooks.
-Descubre from Vista Higher Learning
-Mundo Real from Cambridge University Press
-Que Chevere from EMC Publishing
Both print and online resources were evaluated.
5. BOOKS PILOTED
Brenda Spears-Mania and Dana Weston-Eadeh piloted 4 activities from Descubre 2 (Vista). We tried 2 reading activities and 2 audio activities in our Spanish 3 courses. During the after school textbook evaluation, students were able to watch video clips as well.
The piloted activities were very successful. The students were impressed with their abilities to read at a higher level and were interested in learning advanced vocabulary. They enjoyed reading and hearing about relatable themes (social networks and cell phones). These activities also provided numerous opportunities to work on higher order thinking skills as students analyzed and compared cultural differences and similarities.
6. RECOMMENDATION
We are recommending Descubre 2 (Vista, 2017) for use in Spanish III with implementation starting in the 2016-2017 school year.
We are recommending Descubre 3 (Vista, 2017) for use in Spanish IV with implementation starting in the 2017-2018 school year.
This series contains many of the elements we were looking for and is from the same publisher as the AP textbook (Temas, Vista). This will create a smooth transition among the upper level Spanish courses.
-Clear, easy to read pages
-Student workbook for additional practice
-Authentic reading materials with current cultural infonnation
-Authentic audio materials with current cultural infonnation
-Supplemental videos and movie clips
-Online accounts for all students
We will be able to make better use of our computer lab. Students can do many
activities online in class or at home with instant feedback.
Allows for integration of technology to the language learning experience.
-Speaking activities where the students can record themselves. We will no longer have to spend several days of class time interviewing them individually.
-Grammar tutorial videos - great for students who are absent when these items are presented or A YP students who need extra supports.
-Supports the AP themes and expectations
-Strong customer service. Charlie Hanchett and Betty Dickens from VHL almost always respond within 24 hours. Charlie helped us with all of the AP materials and the proposals for these materials. Betty helped us with the sample materials.
