Reading

• If your child has finished their reading book, they need to put their folder in the book box in class.

• They will then have an opportunity to change their own books during the day.

• If you notice they have brought home the wrong book, please let us know!

• Please bring reading books everyday. We have a number of parent helpers who kindly hear readers during the week. If the book does not need to be changed, children keep it in their table drawer.

• Your child is expected to bring home their book everyday to read.

Homework-a weekly task.• Why? To consolidate what we have been learning in school or to

introduce a new area of learning. To engage children in learning outside of school , furthering their understanding by talking with parents.

• What? It will be a variety of Maths, English and topic work. • How? View this as an opportunity to talk to your child about what

they are learning in class. Spend around 30 minutes on doing the homework.

• When? Homework is given out on a Thursday and asked to be be returned by the following Wednesday for marking.

More about Reading

As part of your reading time, talk about the book. Ask questions to develop understanding and extract information.

Share lots of different types of books – non-fiction, poetry and stories.

Suggestions: join/ visit the library, join book club, save for new books via the school book shop, look out for special events at the library …. Anything that encourages your child to read and makes reading fun!

More about spellings

• Find out which of the spellings your child already knows. • One method you can use to learn new words is ‘Look,

say, cover , write, check’. There is an example of a chart you can use in the pack.

• You could practise writing the spellings in sentences as this helps your child to transfer the knowledge into their everyday writing. It also helps with developing their understanding of ‘a sentence’.

• Try and make it fun!!

Number bonds and High Frequency Words (HFW) Learning is a partnership and one of the ways you can

help is by assisting the children to learn first of all the pairs of numbers that make 10, then 20 and possibly to make a hundred. 4,6 8,2 3,7 10,0 5,5 etc

Also, we are working with the children so that they know the top 100 words, known as HFW, and are able to spell them. You can help here too. Start with phase 1 words on your sheet and gradually build up to phase 5-the phases correspond to our Letters and Sounds stages that we do every day. Thank you!

Emphasis on Mastery
