CampaignPriority:
CARDIAC CAREUNIT
Our vision for the Cardiac Care Program is to offer our comprehensive scope of heart assessments, diagnosis, treatment and management services in one space that better supports patient-centred care and enables our expert care team to work more effectively.
We can accomplish this through our plan to relocate and expand the Cardiac Intensive Care and Cardiac Stepdown Units into one larger, purposely-designed space.
Currently, patient rooms in both units are very small. There is insufficient space in an
emergency situation to allow staff to get all the necessary equipment into a room without
removing impediments, which often wastes precious response time. There is also little
space or comfort for visiting family members and the washroom facilities in both units
are inadequate for the number of people using them. The general air ventilation system
is old and doesn’t always work effectively, making it a challenge to achieve standardized
infection control.
By relocating the hospital’s two Inpatient Cardiology Units to a larger, interrelated space,
we will be able to provide brighter, more spacious and better ventilated modern units for
care and recovery. They will be adjacent to one another to allow medical professionals the
ability to provide more seamless care to patients. This improved space will also offer greater
comfort and privacy for patients and their families.
Construction will begin when the Maternity and Newborn Unit has been completed.
CampaignPriority:
MATERNITY &NEWBORN UNIT
We are dedicated to creating more family-centred maternity and newborn care by expanding and enhancing our Labour and Birthing Unit (LBU), our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU) and our Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic (MFMC).
Our vision is to make our Maternity and Newborn Unit a place where families feel safe and comfortable, where they have the privacy they need in a warm and inviting atmosphere. We want to make this a reality for all new parents.
This model of care supports and enables parents to be central to the
care process of their babies, supporting their infant’s physiological and
psychological needs. In turn, this improves infant outcomes and reduces
parent anxiety.
Our plan is to relocate and merge these three units, creating more modern
and private patient rooms for all stages of birth, each with private washroom
facilities. This is expected to improve outcomes for the mother, reduce the length of hospital
stay, prevent the spread of infection and provide superb patient care and a safe and seamless
work environment for the staff.
Construction on the Maternity and Newborn Unit is expected to begin in Spring 2020 with
occupancy in late 2022.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will
feature private rooms which provide a
model of care that actively involves the
parents in the care team. There will be
improved patient and family privacy and
confidentiality, while another initiative will
control noise in the unit, a best practice
in the provision of neonatal intensive
care services.
" This project will make a fundamental and enduring contribution to your family’s health by providing modern facilities for
our medical team to do their job. Many of Atlantic Canada’s top health
experts work right here at The Moncton Hospital, but currently parts of our
facility don’t match the level of expertise provided by our people. We are
changing that. It is exciting to be part of creating healthier futures for our families,
neighbours and friends. ”Dr. Ken Gillespie
Chief of Staff at The Moncton Hospital
Currently there are 600 patients admitted to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and 1,450 patients admitted to the Cardiac Stepdown Unit per year. Projections show that the number of patient days in these units will
increaseby 21%over the next 5 years.
Did youKNOW?
Southeastern New Brunswick is the fastest growing region in the province and, as a result of that, is expected to see an increase in the number of babies born..
According to Statistics Canada’s projections, our region’s population of women aged 18-44 is expected to
increase by 13% by 2035.

The Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce that the Extraordinary Care Campaign launched last November raised $10.1 Million, more than $2 Million over goal. This marks the Foundation’s most ambitious campaign to date and one of the province's largest healthcare campaigns. This amount, combined with the Province of New Brunswick’s multi-million dollar commitment, will allow for two critical areas at The Moncton Hospital to be brought into the twenty-first century.

First-time parents, Zane and Becca Dunstan, were surprised yet thrilled to discover they were expecting fraternal twins.
Even prior to conceiving, Becca was be-ing followed closely by a cardiologist at The Moncton Hospital for several heart conditions including chronic hyper-tension, tachycardia, and a leaky heart valve. These health concerns made for a high-risk pregnancy, especially since she was carrying twins.
She and the babies were closely mon-itored at the Maternal and Fetal Medi-cine Unit at The Moncton Hospital, undergoing monthly ultrasounds until 21-week’s gestation and then every two-weeks after that as the pregnancy pro-gressed and Becca’s blood pressure con-tinued to climb.
Just shy of 29 weeks, she was admitted to the Labour and De-livery Unit for the remainder of her preg-nancy at which point she began having daily ultrasounds. A short time later, um-bilical backflow tests showed concerns with both babies and although doctors wanted to prolong the pregnancy as long as possible for the sake of the tiny infants, the team decided the time had come to bring the babies into the world.
On June 29, 2017, at 29 weeks and two days, Becca gave birth by c-section to two beautiful babies – Olivia (Livy) and Declan.
“At 29 years of age, on June 29, I had 29-weeker’s. I had the Dunstan doubles,’’ jokes the ecstatic new mom.
The babies were surprisingly healthy
despite being born 11-weeks premature. Olivia weighed a mere two pounds at birth and Declan slightly larger at two-and-a-half pounds. Livy had to be in-tubated and placed on pure oxygen for about the first 20-hours but Declan re-quired little medical intervention.
Both babies spent the first two months of their lives in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NNICU) which Becca ad-mits was pretty overwhelming for a first-time mother with premature twins. She would arrive at the hospital at 7:30 a.m. each day and leave around 8:30 or 9 p.m. and although she knew her babies were in the best of hands, it broke her heart each and every time she had to leave them behind.
“But as scary as it was, everyone involved were angels because there were days I was drown-ing and they saved me,’’ she commends. “They
taught me so much and held me above water on days I could not tread.’’
After two full months in hospital and a two-pound weight gain by both, Declan and Livy finally got to go home for the first time.
The Salisbury couple is extremely grateful for the outstanding care their family received at The Moncton Hospital and wholeheartedly support the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Extraordinary Care Campaign which raised an impres-sive $10.1 million to enhance and expand two major areas of care at the hospital, iincluding the Cardiac Care and Mater-nity and Newborn Units.
“I cannot say enough good things or
advocate enough for the NNICU, Labour & Delivery, Maternal Medicine, and my cardiologist,’’ Becca praises. “The fa-cility is amazing and was a saving grace for me.’’
Although she considers the hospital incredible as it is, she admits there’s al-ways room for improvement. Noise and a lack of privacy sometimes posed a prob-lem for her as was the absence of private rooms with beds and a personal bath-room – some of the very issues being ad-dressed by the capital campaign.
“I love this campaign. I think it is
wonderful. It’s an extraordinary cam-paign for ordinary people like us.’’
The twins, who turned two in June, have had their fair share of normal child-hood sicknesses and a few other health issues during the first 24-months of their lives but, overall, continue to thrive and develop normally. Both attend daycare and Becca has returned to work full-time as a physiotherapy assistant.
Life is chaotic for the young couple but they are embracing every minute and feel blessed to have had such a posi-tive outcome thanks to The Moncton
Hospital, the Friends of The Monc-ton Hospital Foundation and the many donors who supported the fundraising campaign.
“Children are our future and anything we can do to prevent the loss of a child or mother; we have to do it.’’

Parents of Preemies Thankful for Outstanding Care Received in Cardiac and Maternal & Fetal Medicine Units at The Moncton Hospital
Becca and Zane Dunstan of Salisbury cherish each and every minute with their two-year-old fraternal twins, Declan and Olivia (Livy). The twins, who entered the world 11 weeks early at The Moncton Hospital, weighed only two pounds at birth. Both are happy and healthy and doing all the things typical two-year-olds do.
Becca Dunstan gave birth to fraternal twins 11 weeks early on June 29, 2017. Declan and Olivia (Livy) each weighed only two pounds at birth and had to remain in the NNICU at The Moncton Hospital for two months. Here, the proud mom gets some one-on-one time with Declan a few weeks after his birth.
Fraternal twins Declan and Olivia (Livy) Dunstan entered the world 11-weeks early back on June 29, 2017. Weighing in at only two pounds each at birth, the tiny infants spent the first two months of their lives in the NNICU at The Moncton Hospital. Now two-years-old, the twins are healthy and thriving.
