MUSIC
Minimalism
History
Minimalism developed in the 1960S, in both art and music. The idea is that very simple
elements are used to create the maximum effect. It was very experimental music for the
time.
Sound
The is usually no clear melodic line (tune) but there is always a very steady pulse. A small
cell or motif (fragment of music) is ‘looped’ and then manipulated into lots of different
forms. Each change is very gradual almost so you cannot notice it. It is VERY repetitive.
Minimalist Composers
Composers include Phillip Glass, Steve Reich, Michael Nyman.
Minimalist Techniques
Retrograde Play the motif backwards
Phasing Layer the motif starting in lots of different places at the same time.
Metamorphisis Gradually change the notes of the motif one by one until you have something different
Note addition/deletion Gradually add or delete notes from the motif until you have something new.
Reggae
History
Reggae music developed in Jamaica in the 1960s and 70’s. It is strongly influenced by
traditional African, American jazz and old-time rhythm and blues.
Characteristics
Reggae music has a very distinctive flavour. Harmonies are often limited to a few chords.
And a loud bass riff is played on a bass guitar. It is often written in slow 4/4 time with
accents on the 2nd and 4th beat. This off beat pattern is known as syncopation. The vocal
style is very obvious as the lyrics are sung in a Jamaican dialect and often about local people
and events such as faith, love relationships and poverty.
Instruments
The following instruments are often used in Reggae: Bass Guitar; Guitar; Brass instrument;
Organ; Melodica.
Reggae artists
A really famous reggae artist is Bob Marley (1945-81) and his group, the Wailers. In 1964,
Marley formed his vocal group the Wailers which included Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingston,
both of whom went on to enjoy solo careers.
They were largely responsible for the widespread popularity of reggae.
Marley took reggae out of Jamaica and spread it around the world.
