Lonnie JohnsonIt is my honor to be chosen as Greeter of the Month. I am a member of Grants Pass Kiwanis, and we are a Commu-nity Service Organization deeply involved in the youth of our community. Our slogan is “Serving the Children of the World”.

We have a long list of projects in which we are involved. College Dreams, GPHS Key Club, where I serve as an ad-visor, YMCA, Wildlife Images, Scholarships and Student of the Month recognition at NVHS, GPHS, and HVHS. Josephine Community Library, North and South Middle School Builders Clubs, K-Kids at Redwood Elementary, Our Foster Kids, Siskiyou Community Health Center, Jo-sephine County Fairgrounds, and the lists continue.

In 2014, we started a new program we call Biz for Kids. In this program we offer our business partners an opportunity to be a huge part of our youth programs by contributing to our 501c3. In return, we advertise our partners, and ask them to be directly involved in helping our youth. 100% of our partner’s contributions go directly to our programs, with no overhead costs. That is the promise we make and the promise we keep.

Member FocusGrants PassMuseum of ArtIf you lived in Grants Pass in the 80s, you probably visited the museum at the Isaac Walton building in Riverside Park. Classes where held there, exhibits were held there. The original vision was from Charles Hill in 1979 when he believed a nonprofit museum should be formed. (He just celebrated his 90th birthday in Portugal, by the way)

The museum remained in the park for 20 years. Then in 1998 the museum bought a building on G Street. The museum oc-cupies the upper floor. Downstairs is Gal-lery One – a wonderful place to purchase indigenous art from our local artists. Also downstairs is Rebel Bricks – a fun Lego store that offers great birthday par-ties and now their new Lego parties with wine for adults. The library contains over 800 books about art. If you are a mem-ber you can check them out. Anyone can come and browse during the museum’s open hours.

The Museum has the following recurring events:• First Friday Live Participation• Second Friday Poetry Night• Second Wednesday Life Drawing• Third Friday Wine and Paint classes for adults• Fourth Friday Music

The Month of March has Adult and Fam-ily Workshops on Needlefelted Bunnies,

Fabric Eggs, Sip and Zen, Ukrainian Eggs, Soul Collage and Kanzashi Flow-ers. Check out Facebook Page for Grants Pass Museum for the dates and times.

The exhibits at the museum feature lo-cal and regional artists as well as na-tional and occasionally international offerings. There’s always something to see and do at the Grants Pass Museum of Art. You may visit the museum for free.

If you want to belong – and get extra benefits – the Individual Membership starts at $30. Contact us for more de-tails. Remember our hours are Tues-day – Saturday from Noon to 4:00pm. Come up stairs and see what is going on.

Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest ChallengesBy Amy Cuddy

Through Harvard Professor Amy Cud-dy’s book, Presence, she reveals that we don’t need to embark on a grand spiritual quest or complete an inner transformation to harness the power of presence. Instead we need to nudge ourselves, moment by moment, by tweaking our body language, behavior, and mindset in our day-to-day lives.

Become a Bike Friendly Business and Enhance your Marketing Exposure to BicyclistsWhat is the Bike Friendly Program?

Oregon loves bicyclists. That’s why we’re the first state in the nation to create a Bike Friendly Business program geared toward travelers. It serves as a recogni-tion and training program aimed to:

• Help tourism-related businesses un-derstand the importance of Oregon’s growing bicycle tourism industry

• Provide tips and tools for how busi-nesses can be Bike Friendly• Highlight businesses who commit to enhancing the Oregon biking experi-ence for visitors and Oregonians

Why Your Business Should Participate?• Bicycle travelers in Oregon spend $400 million annually – approximately $1.1 million per day. By becoming Bike Friendly, your business will be primed to tap into this growing segment of our economy.

• This free program will give tourism-focused businesses special recognition through Travel Oregon’s marketing channels including RideOregonRide.com, TravelOregon.com, and the offi-

cial state Visitor Guide, which is pro-duced each year.

• Businesses also receive a welcome packet with a Bike Friendly toolkit, stickers, window clings and the op-tion to purchase a customized Bike Friendly sign.

Who can participate

Tourism-related businesses that have a physical location in Oregon, which are open to the general public and have hours of operation posted at the location and/or online. Tourism-re-lated businesses shall fall in line with Travel Oregon’s Bus iness Listing Guidelines in order to par-ticipate in the Bike Friendly Business program.

How to Get Recognized as Bike Friendly?

Businesses need to follow these four simple steps:

• Step 1: Know the program require-ments and recommendations. De-pending on the services or amenities your business provides, there may be requirements that we request you adhere to. We also list recommenda-tions that are helpful for any busi-ness looking to maximize their bike-friendliness.

• Step 2: Get inspired and informed! Watch the 3-part video/tutorial series. Please watch all three videos in full be-fore completing Step 3. You will be tested on them in the application.

• Step 3: Submit your application.

• Step 4: Obtain your Bike Friendly sign and take advantage of your welcome packet materials.

Same great surgeon.Same surgery.$ave money.Grants Pass Surgery Center (GPSC) is a patient-centered, cost-effective, high-quality surgical facility for patients who do not need a 24-hour hospital stay. Advancements in minimally invasive techniques and short-acting general anesthetics continue to add to the number of surgeries that can be performed at an outpatient facility.

Value Your out-of-pocket cost is much lower at GPSC compared with a hospital. Well-informed patients compare the quality and the cost of their options before deciding where to have surgery. If your surgery can be done at GPSC, make sure your surgeon knows your preference.

Grand Master’s Coins in Grants PassWhen Grand Master Sheryl Rohde made her official visit to Golden Rule Lodge No. 78 on December 9, 2015, she asked that our lodge select three individuals in our area that are making a difference in the community and recognize them with the “You Make A Difference” coin.

Golden Rule Lodge began the process of selecting worthy people and narrowed it down to the following who were hon-ored recently by having Noble Grand Hal Miller present the coins to them at their place of employment.

Pictured above is Lloyd “Pinky” Stiewig PGM, Colene Martin Executive Director of the Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce and

Noble Grand Hal Miller. Colene and her staff work tirelessly to not only to promote the businesses of our city BUT she also gets the Chamber involved in bringing activities to Grants Pass like Concerts in the Park and the Fourth of July Fireworks, to name a few,

for the enjoyment of all our residents.

NG Hal Miller presents a “You Make A Difference” coin to Jeff Hyde, President of Evergreen Federal Bank, who accepted it

on behalf of all the bank’s employees. Over the years Evergreen Bank has supported the artists in town who have produced unique works of art that are displayed in town and at their workshop, “The Bear Hotel,” which every Christmas is turned into a magical

Christmas Land for young and old to enjoy.

The last “You Make A Difference” coin went to Recently Retired Interim Fair Grounds Manager, Mary Groves, who three years ago took charge of a financially strapped

fairgrounds and worked diligently to bring the Josephine County Fairgrounds out of

debt and make it once again a viable and an integral part of our community. Notice that

she was still at the office, so being retired means little to this dynamic woman.

Fairs boosted industrial and irri-gation interests and mining. Some fairs touted Southern Oregon’s su-perior climate and farm products; some featured farmers and their fat stock with horse racing contests, quilt displays and baked goods competitions. The name Josephine County Fair was selected as the offi-cial name for the fair from all previ-ous titles and used for the first time in 1914.

From 1907-1910 Grants Pass hosted an Irrigation and Industrial Fair. In 1909 farmers held a Grange Fair in Williams at the Woodman Hall. The Williams Grange Fair moved to town in 1912 and was held at the Paddock Building and on “I” Street.

From1913-1915 the Grange Fair moved to Murphy Grange Hall and was renamed The Josephine County Fair. In 1916 The Josephine Coun-ty Fair once again moved closer to town and settled at the Ball Park [aka City Park, and now Riverside Park] and was held there until 1926 except when interrupted by WWI.

Jack of All Trades,Master of None!Quoted by Lee Jago

Lee Jago has been a Chamber Visitors Center Volunteer since June 2005

For those eleven years she has greeted thousands of visitors, helped locals and found answers and information about Jo-sephine County for all who came to the Chamber Visitors Center.

She and her husband Bill moved to Grants Pass in 1977 and jumped right into being part of our community. For over 12 Years they were shuttle drivers for rafting out-fitters over Bear Camp Rd, taking some-times two trips a day.

Experience is what our volunteers have to give our visitors. She worked many years for Pac Bell and transferred from San Diego to New York offices, and over to Tucson. She was at Camp Pendleton during the war working Pac Bell and before that was in Burbank as an airplane mechanic working on PT – 22’s airplanes.

Lee is retiring as a Chamber Volunteer, so she can travel more, go to the mov-ies with her friends and explore South-ern Oregon.

Thank You Lee for all the care you gave to our Chamber Visitors Center part-ners and friends.
