TotheCityofMadisonFromtheCollaborativeTeam“ActualSizeArtworks”GailSimpsonandAristotleGeorgiadesaresculptorswhoworkindividuallyandaspartofActualSizeArtworks.Wearecommittedtotheideaofartistascitizenandbelieveinthetransformativepotentialofartworkinthecommunity.Weareparticularlyinterestedinprojectswherethereisanopportunitytointegrateoursculpturalworkwiththesite;ourgoalistocreateartworkthatengagesitsaudienceinalivelyandintelligentmannerandcontributestoadynamic,memorablepublicspace.Ourworkisusuallycharacterizedbyastrongprofile,asenseofhumor,andexcellentcraftsmanship.Westrivetocreateartworksthatchangeasaviewerwalkspast,creatingasenseofdiscoveryandkeepingupinterestuponrepeatedviewing.Webelievethatourroleasartist/citizensenablesustomakeameaningfulcontributiontomunicipalspaces,andweareinterestedinthePennsylvaniaParkprojectbecauseofthesculpturalpossibilitiesofthesmalllinearparkwithinthebuiltenvironmentoftheneighborhood.We’refamiliarwiththeparkandhaveexperiencecreatingsculpturewithasignificantvisualpresencethatspeakstobothdriversandpedestrians.Webelievethatartworkcanhighlightandinterpretacommunity,helpclarifyabusyandvisuallydensespace,andcreateaspaceforimaginationandpossibility.Publicspacesthatcontributetothecommongoodseemmoreimportantthanevertoday;cultivatingasenseofrapportisastrengthofours.Regardingscale,wetrytomakeworksthatcanholdtheirowninalargerspacebutrefertohumanscalesotheviewerdoesn’tfeeloverwhelmed.Weworkwithawidevarietyofweather-permanentmaterials,includingsteel,aluminum,bronzeandconcrete,andweareattentivetomattersofdurabilityandmaintenance.Wehaveasolidtrackrecordofon-timeandon-budgetprojects.Asyou’llseefromourportfolio,wehavehaddesignteamexperienceworkingwithengineers,architects,andlandscapearchitects,andourcommunicationskillsarestrong.Manyofourprojectshavehadstrongparticipationandinputfromthecommunitiesbeingservedbytheproject,andasaresultoftheseexperienceswefeelcommittedtodevelopingprojectsthatareintegratedthroughdialoguewiththoseinvolvedwiththesite.Publicartisanopportunitytoovercometheapprehensionmanypeoplefeelaboutcontemporaryartbygeneratingaconnectionbetweenartistandaudience,andtheresultisanadditiontothecommunitythatisappreciated,discussedandvalued.WewouldliketobepartofthisprocessbydevelopingapublicartprojectforPennsylvaniaPark.Thankyouforyourconsideration.GailSimpson&AristotleGeorgiades(608)217-9599673CenterRd.Stoughton,[email protected]

These clusters of winged forms gather around the light fixtures as a metaphor for the role of the library in the community. These sculptures feature colorful examples of urban wildlife perched on forms resembling tree branches or utility poles, to mark 5 locations on this urban trail. ActualSize03. “Transporters”, with Arnold Martin, 2015, Kansas City Union Station Streetcar Shelter, cast aluminum, 48” x 42” x 16”, 1st of 3 sculptures to be installed in Union Station Plaza. Budgt $83,000 The sculptures in this group refer to the history and future of Kansas City as a transportation hub, consisting of various forms of transportation blended into one object. ActualSize04: “Sown”, 2012, Cast stone, steel, lighting. Minnesota State University – Moorhead 48’ dia. gathering space with seating. Budget $138,000. This sculpture for the campus quadrangle is based on images of the prairie and the forest, with oversize cast stone forms set into a circular area lit by waving clusters of acorn lights. This projects is in response to current research about the connections between trees in the natural environment. A schematic diagram of an acorn creates a series of compartments filled with plant material. ActualSize07. “Under the Surface”, 2012, Dejope Residence Hall at UW-Madison, Madison WI Acrylic, lighting 12’ x 12’ Budget $96,000 This sculpture is based on a historically significant hydrographic map of Lake Mendota produced by the University’s Limnology Center. Actual Size08. “Undercurrent”, 2011, Dwight Foster Library, Ft. Atkinson WI Stainless Steel and rocks, 2 clusters 12’ l x 5’ w x 24” h Budget $40,000 This sculpture makes reference to water flowing over stones for this library near a river. It also provides seating. ActualSize09. “Place to Place”, 2009, Warch Student Center, Lawrence University, Appleton WI Aluminum 26’ l x 8’ dia. Budget $50,000 This suspended sculpture is meant to suggest winding pathways in the form of two intertwining, conical spiral stair forms. ActualSize10. “Beacon”, 2007, Fire Station #5, Lawrence, KS Stainless steel, bronze bell, lighting, colored concrete, 17’ x 10’ x 10’ Budget $38,000 This sculpture acts as a gateway to the fire station entrance, and is based on an ascending ladder form. The bronze bell at the top casts light onto a gold disc, with pedestrians passing through the middle.
