ORION PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS September 2017
Dear Parents
We’ve had an action packed 3rd Term, with Interhouse Athletics, Heritage Day Celebrations, a visit
from the Snake People, the Spring Art Competition and a talk from the Infinity Tribe Crew on Anti-
bullying. In the background our new school building has started to take shape. We’re set for an
exciting Term 4 as we get ready to pack up and move into the new premises.
We could hardly say that Spring arrived – as we were thrown head first into summer weather. Please
remember to send your children to school with all the necessities to cope with the heat and sun: hats,
water bottles and sun screen.
Could I remind learners to please hand in cell phones during school hours. We can’t take responsibility for
phones being lost.
Please note the change in the annual calendar: Start date for Term 4 is Tuesday 10 October for the students.
Staff will be back on Monday 9th October for training. An SMS will be sent to parents as a reminder.
Next term we have final year exams for the Intermediate Phase. These will start early in November, so there’s
not much time to get that revision done! The exam schedule will be published early in Term 4. Parent’s,
please take note of the timetable and encourage your children to get revising early on. Setting up a
REVISION TIMETABLE is a great way to help them get organised in advance.
Staff news:
Carlie Grobler, our Grade R teacher, will be changing roles within the school and moving to become the IP
Skills teacher in Term 4. She will be taking her vast experience working with learners with barriers into this new
role and we look forward to the exciting changes that she will bring to this class. Thank you to Tricia
Sanssoucie for filling the gap in this class during Term 3.
The Grade R post has been filled for Term 4, with a wonderful, enthusiastic young lady, Jennifer Botha. We
look forward to welcoming Jennifer to our Orion Family. Carlie will be on hand to help Jennifer settle in to
this new role.
Our Orion family is growing, as two of our teachers are due to welcome their babies into the world late in
Term 4. Liza-Marie Harris will be taking maternity leave from the end of October. Her Grade 1 post will be
covered by a very experience remedial teacher, Kathleen Taylor who will be with us until Liza-Marie returns
in March 2018.
Jodi Hallam, The Grade 4 teacher, will also be on maternity leave for the first term of 2018. We will let you
know who her replacement will be in due course.
On a sad note, Storm van der Walt, one of our highly valued Educational Psychologists, has been offered a
fantastic opportunity to move into a private practice closer to home. She is very sad to leave Orion, as we
are to lose her. I’d like to thank her for agreeing to stay on for the duration of 2017, in order to ensure that
an effective and supportive handover takes place of her current caseload.

Congratulations to GLADIATORS for winning the
Interhouse Athletics and to TITANS for winning the Spirit
Award. It was a fabulous day enjoyed by all
A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE CLASSROOMS……….
Grade R Carlie Grobler
Our term so far has had some fun times.
We participated in the inter house athletics. The
children were rewarded with their medals.
Our themes have been moving towards nature. We
covered rivers and the little creatures that live there, the
sea, reptiles and spring.
During our reptile theme we read the story of the Greedy Python and then acted it out with the
children being swallowed by a huge duvet (python!). Plenty of giggles.
Grade 1 Liza-Marie Harris
Athletics Day fun!
The class took part in RACA, and
won on a Diamond Certificate
for our IsiZulu small group
performance! Thank you to our
IsiZulu Teacher, Sibhekile for her
hard work and dedication.
We had a sad moment when we
said goodbye to a class friend.
Lesedi, we will miss you in the class
and we wish you all the best at
your new school.
Grade 2 Lesley Wilson
After a great holiday, the grade 2’s returned to school excited
to learn about TRANSPORT and ROAD SAFETY. Look at the
fabulous road traffic signs they made. Well done Gr 2’s. See
them also proudly showing off their SPRING HATS.

The Grade 3’s were each given an animal to research and
present to the class. They had to have 8 interesting or new
facts about their animal with a picture to show the class.
Look at some of the animals we learnt new facts about.
It was our turn to do something for Assembly this term. They
told the school what it means to be kind. Well done Grade
3’s.
Foundation Phase Pre-Vocational Class (F.P.P.V.) Priscille Blake
These past couple of weeks have flown by. We have had such fun in class
learning about 3D shapes. The children started on paper by drawing in 2D, then
cutting them out to make different 3D shapes like a cube and a hexagon. We
then went one step further and made 3D shapes using jelly tots and tooth
picks, what a lovely, tasty mouth-watering activity this turned out
to be.
My learners also did a speech on "What I want to be when I grow up". It is
very interesting to hear what their different dreams and ambitions are for the
future. We had a pilot, a chef, an artist, a scientist, a paediatrician, a singer
and even a teacher. The children enjoyed dressing up and were very
confident talking in front of the class. Thank you Gina for the delicious Bovril
muffins you made for the whole class to taste, all the children will agree with
me when I say they were scrumptious.
Foundation Phase Skills (F.P. Skills) Tricia Sanssoucie
The class had huge fun icing cupcakes. They took them home to share with Mum and Dad. They also fabric painted a
cartoon character which was then framed. Well done to all of them!
Intermediate Phase Skills (I.P. Skills.) Tricia Sanssoucie
Some of the beautiful items these talented children have made during the term. Well Done. In keeping with our 2nd
theme the learners created a Solar System mobile. They also fabric painted pictures which were then made into bags
for the girls and picture frames for the boys. Good work IP Skills.
The Solar System mobile A book bag Water project
Intermediate Phase Pre-Vocational Class (I.P.P.V.) Sandy-Lee Wouda
We plunged into measurement, and learned about
digital time and capacity which resulted in the children
doing their own baking using the knowledge that they
gained during class. In History we held our own voting
session since we were learning about ballot papers. The
learners were asked to go home and read up
about Nelson Mandela’s life and why he is
such an asset to South Africa. The children
presented wonderful prepared speeches
on their rain forest projects and we
topped things off by winning a PLATINUM
certificate at RACA
Grade 4 Jodi Hallam
Nina De Louwere took part in a Show
Jumping competition and did very
well. She received Two 1st places, One
2nd place and One 3rd place. WOW fantastic. I
am SUPER proud of you Nina. You
did so well. Congratulations!
The Grade 4’s did a 3D Art project this term. They
had to choose between a Bird, Fish or Tortoise and
make a 3D model of it. They did a great job and
had lots of fun too!
Grade 5 Nicky Oswald
Grade 6 Ivan Hague
The end of term again and the Grade Sixes are looking forward to the holidays. We have
been exploring what we can do with Information Technology this term and have some
ideas to follow up on with our Maths programmes and using computers for English. In the
academic field we now have a good foundation for next term and the end the year. Enjoy
the holidays!
Spring day fun in Grade

SOME OF THE FABULOUS ART WORK
DONE BY THE ART CLUB.
School Prayer
Help me, Lord, to learn at school,
To listen well, not play the fool.
To read and spel land learn to write,
To do my maths with all my might.
Although the work is sometimes tough,
I’ll do my best, its good enough.
Please help me try, and try some more
Until I know more than before.
To play with others and to be kind,
To show I care and friends to find.
Please help me, Lord, with all these things
To learn from what the school day brings.
AMEN

When presented in a child’s language, Yoga and Pilates can help counter the stress experienced by young people living in a hurry-up world. Pilates and Yoga are designed for both the non-athletic child as well as the competitive teen and is a smart way of getting children to participate in exercise because it caters to their various ages, fitness levels, and athletic abilities. At only R1 100.00 per school term, it’s a steal! Treat your little one in a way that can benefit them physically, mentally and socially.
