Like in Christianity Muslims often use stories to explain their teachings. The following story can be
found in the HADITH (Teachings of the
Prophet)...
Once a religious man met a woman who invited him to commit a sin. The man flatly
refused. After her constant insisting, she still failed.
She then gave him a choice of options: to commit adultery with her or to murder her
newly born child or to consume some alcohol she possessed.
If he was not willing to agree then she would scream and falsely tell people he had raped
her.
The man upon pondering decided to consume the alcohol, taking it to be least
harmful of the three sins.
Upon consumption of the alcohol, he became intoxicated, and then consequently, he killed
the child and committed adultery with the woman.
What was the moral of this story for
Muslims?
From this what conclusions can you make about Muslim
attitudes to drugs and alcohol?
Alcohol and
illegal drugs are
HARAM!
HARAM= forbiddenMAKRUH = disliked
According to Islam, all drugs and alcohol are
HARAM.
Tobacco is known as MAKRUH as the Qur’an
does not give any guidance on it, although a lot of Muslims want it to be
seen as HARAM.
Why is smoking MAKRUH but drinking HARAM?
Why do you think some Muslims believe smoking
should be HARAM?
Muslim attitudes to drugs and alcohol…
