How to?
This slide deck shows step by step, how to reduce a generic CAD file
without a loss of too many details

DirectModel (.jt)
The standard 3D file format is DirectModel (.jt). DirectModel files are
often referred to as JT files.
DirectModel or JT is a lightweight CAD-neutral 3D data format. You can
quickly load, navigate through, and analyze extremely complex JT
assemblies.
Typically, JT files are created from CAD files before you open the 3D
models in the viewer. 3D CAD models are translated from their native
CAD-specific formats to the CAD-neutral JT format. This is often done
automatically by a translator in the CAD system, or by a translator
external to the CAD system and the viewer.

JT Translators
Translators are available for all the major CAD systems.
When you translate a CAD
• model of a single part to JT, the result is one JT file.
• assembly to JT, there are several ways to save the various parts
and subassemblies:

Minimize 3D-Data 1/6
An application (i.e. Tecnomatix Plant
Simulation) shall handle several parts of
remarkable size for a Discrete Event
Simulation.
In order to maintain/increase the
performance it is mostly required to
reduce the amount of 3D data while
maintaining an appropriate 3D
representation.

Minimize 3D-Data 2/6
Transforming the native CAD formats to
JT of course is the first and necessary
step.
But the amount of 3D data may remain
too high.

Minimize 3D-Data 3/6
Using TC 9.1 LifeCycle Visualization
Mockup it is possible to furthermore
reduce the 3D data.

Minimize 3D-Data 4/6
TC 9.1 LifeCycle Visualization Mockup provides four different procedures
to reduce the 3D data.
1. Visibility Filter most detailed representation of visible parts
least size reduction
2. Outer Shell simple representation of outer shell
no parts anymore, no closed surface
3. Swept Volume simple representation, no risk of leaking confident data
no parts anymore, color information went lost
4. JTOptimize best size reduction, detailed representation
command line tool
All can be used in combination. The slide deck will show them separately.
If you find more/better options any feedback is welcome!

General 1/5
• In TC 9.1 LifeCycle Visualization Mockup load the entire model • it is transformed to JT automatically
• it may take some time
© Siemens PLM Software 2012. All Rights Reserved.
General 2/5
• Export the entire model to create the JT file • because handling of a JT file is much faster than a native CAD file
• Close the native and open the JT file • The achieved JT file size should be < 30% of the native file size

General 3/5
• Activate the toolbars • 3D Navigation
• 3D Part Edit

General 4/5
• In the toolbar 3D Part Edit open Preferences • Switch off the Use „Off-Screen“-Rendering

General 5/5
From this point you may follow either:
1. Visibility Filter most details < 10%
2. Outer Shell good reduction < 5%
3. Swept Volume best anonymization < 5%
4. JTOptimize best reduction < 1%

Visibility Filter 1/2
• Open Actions/Filters… • Add a Visibility Filter with the settings below
• Set Properties as shown below too, press Ok
• Apply Filter, wait until finished, Close Filter

Visibility Filter 2/2
• Consider the selection in the tree view
• Do File/Export… (confirm second dialog) • The achieved JT file size should be < 10% of the native file size

Outer Shell 1/4
• In the toolbar 3D Part Edit open Visibility • Place the settings as shown below (Name: VisiblePart 1st Pass)
• Press Apply

Outer Shell 2/4
• In the tree view the node VisiblePart 1st Pass appears
• In Visibility • Place the settings as shown below (Name: VisiblePart 2nd Pass)
• Press ok

Outer Shell 3/4
• Consider the part appearance
• In the tree view highlight the newly created VisiblePart 2nd Pass
• Do File/Export… (confirm second dialog) • The achieved JT file size should be < 5% of the native file size

Outer Shell 4/4
• Up to now it was impossible to find an explanation for the need of
doing two passes
• If one tries to export the VisiblePart 1st Pass the JT file size may
even increase

Swept Volume 1/3
• Open Actions/Swept Volume/Preferences… • Set Preferences as shown below, press Ok

Swept Volume 2/3
• Open Actions/Swept Volume/Create… • Set Preferences as shown below, press Create

Swept Volume 3/3
• In the tree view show only the newly created SweptVolume
• Do File/Export… (confirm second dialog) • The achieved JT file size should be < 5% of the native file size

JTOptimize 1/2
• Run the command line application JTOptimize.exe which is
located in Visualization/Program of the TC installation folder • Use the parameters shown below in the cmd-window
• The achieved JT file size should be < 1% of the native file size

JTOptimize 2/2
• The representation quality can best be influenced by the option
low/medium/high/super
• For more options refer to jtoptimize.htm
This file may not be up to date (8.1 instead of 9.1)!
