A Growth Mindset

A mindset is a belief about yourself and your

most fundamental qualities like ability, faith, personality,

political views, talents etc.

Page 9: to Year 5 Warren Mead Junior School Mr Jackson Miss Harper Miss Smythe Mrs Charles Mrs Bell Mrs Wright Mrs Rose-Matthews

Mindset: Fixed Growth

Your belief: Intelligence is a fixed trait Intelligence is cultivated through learning

Your priority: Look clever, not stupid Become more clever through learning

You feel clever: Achieving easy, low effort successes and outperforming others

Engaging fully with new tasks, exerting effort, stretching and applying skills

You avoid: Effort, difficulty, setbacks, higher-performing peers

Easy, previously mastered tasks

Growth vs. Fixed Mindsets

Page 10: to Year 5 Warren Mead Junior School Mr Jackson Miss Harper Miss Smythe Mrs Charles Mrs Bell Mrs Wright Mrs Rose-Matthews

A growth mindset enables children to:

Embrace learning and growth Understand the role of effort in

creating talent Maintain confidence and

effectiveness in the face

challenges and setbacks

…and it can be taught. It’s never too late!

Why is mindset important?

I’m not good at _____... Yet!I can’t do ______... Yet!I tried but it didn’t work… Yet!

English and Maths

• In English children work with their class teacher.

• In Maths children work across 3 groups. Groups are divided based on the children’s needs. The challenges in each group will overlap and the children will be continually observed to see if they are still in the best fit group.

• Levels are no more

• Children will be assessed against age expectations within the year

• Currently going through Year 6 sample papers

The children achieved beyond expectation, they surprised and delighted us! We are very proud of them all!

Progress has accelerated throughout the school, but particularly in Year 6.

More than that, a record number of children achieved level 5, which is the national target for pupils at the age of 14: 62% reading; 35% writing and 54% maths.

In reading and maths, 20% more children achieved level 5 than in previous years.

Not only were more than half of our children able to perform a full 3 years ahead of expectations but 16% achieved level 6 in maths, which is equivalent to GCSE.

That’s astounding!
