If you’re a newbie, get ready for the time of your life. If you’re returning to education then get ready for another time of your life and if you’re coming from abroad then get ready for the Irish time of your life!

The Students’ Union is YOUR representative body in DIT and we work with (and occasionally against) the DIT committees, HEA, Dept of Ed and you the students to make sure that DIT is the top college from a student perspective. Our services to you range from support with academic, exam/assessment issues to welfare info, jobs listing and employment support and of course the all important SU gigs, balls and events! We’ll be running plenty of info and welfare campaigns and nights out over the year but none of them will be a success without your help, which leads me nicely on...

Doing well in your studies is important while you’re at college – getting a qualification is why you’re here – but it’s not the only thing . There’s plenty going on outside of study with dozens of clubs, societies and SU activities that you can get involved in. If you’re looking for the serious side then you can become an SU Class Rep or Governing Councillor and help make your course and Union better (always good on the CV!). Just looking for a little more fun? Try joining– or even setting up – a club or soc and indulge that parcour/tiddly winks passion.

Or you could volunteer and help out with any of our campaigns this year - it’s a great way to meet people and there’s nothing more enjoyable than dressing up as giant sperm or welfairy! Just drop into your local SU and sign up. We are always looking for students input to this magazine too. Do you have a letter, an article, complaint or rant you think should be in print? Got a photo, draw-ing or artwork you’ like to share – email [email protected] and we will print it. (within reason, terms apply, etc etc)

We hope you have a great time at DIT this year, keep the studying in mind but remember that college is more than all that and GET INVOLVED! Pop into the SU Office and say hello, sure that’s what we’re here for...

A WORD FROM: CIARAN NEVIN

SU PRESIDENTDITSU.IE - your on-line Student Hub

Hello to all you DIT students!

Whether you’re a Fresher or a final year, we hope that you’ll find something of interest in this, our first issue of Toast of this year. Who knows, there may even be a picture of you inside. This issue is packed with information, advice, fun and events, all carefully prepared by your Students’ Union.

This year we will be putting a big focus into online communication and social networking, so after you’ve read this magazine cover to cover be sure to follow us on Twitter, like us on facebook and visit www.ditsu.ie.

DIT Students’ Union is here to ensure that you have the best college experience possible. Every student is a member and that makes us over 19000 strong. We have offices located in the five larger sites where you can call in for help and advice.

We have a strong democratic structure to ensure that everyone can have a say in what your Union does for you. An important aspect of this are our Class Reps. We have been electing Class Reps over the past week and will continue to do so this week. Every class should have a Class Rep and if your’s does not, let us know and we’ll sort it out for you. If you’d like to be a Class Rep, we provide top quality train-ing so don’t be afraid to go for it!

Myself and the two Vice Presidents, David and Eric are based in DIT Aungier St, but we will be on each site regularly to meet students. Each of the 6 larger sites also has a Class Rep Convenor - read on to be introduced to your Class Rep Convenor. This is a part time paid position and there is currently one vacancy in DIT Bolton St. Email [email protected] if you are a Bolton St student and would be inter-ested in the position.

To find out more on how you can make a dif-ference, pick up one of our “Getting Involved” leaflets from your local Students’ Union office.

This week is Clubs & Societies week and with over 80 societies and over 40 clubs, there are plenty of options. Sign up and have some fun.

The Freshers’ Ball, headlined by Mr. Hudson is taking place on this week too, so read on to find out more.

On a more serious note, we all know the chal-lenges students are facing while coming to college. Fees, bills, rent, food and travel costs all place a huge burden on students and their families. If you are really struggling financially, please do not be afraid to call down to the Students’ Union for some free and unbiased help. Throughout the year we will be running many campaigns to better the situation for students. I will be meeting with TD’s and ministers to tell them your story and make sure your voice is heard.

My one tip for the year ahead is to give it your all. Going to college is a great experience, so work hard and balance it with plenty of fun.

I look forward to serving you all in the year ahead, Ciaran

A WORD FROM: DAVID KEOGAN

SU VICE PRESIDENTDITSU.IE - your on-line Student Hub

Hello there!

Welcome to DIT. I hope you enjoyed your Inductions so far and are ready for the first year of your time in the DIT Students’ Union family. My name is David or Keogan or Cub (long story). I work for you, every single one of you, in the area of Education and Welfare. That covers issues with your course, making sure DIT make decisions with your best interests in mind, helping keep you healthy (mentally and physically) and general advice.

We have an action packed year ahead and plenty to be getting involved with. Getting involved is the single best way (after going to class) of making your college time the best it can be. There are a sh1t load of ways of getting involved and an equal amount of reasons for why it is a good idea.

Becoming a Class Rep lets you make sure your class are getting the best possible deal in college. You make sure your fellow students are getting the best education by represent-ing in dealings with the lecturers and other DIT heads. You make sure they have a flipping brilliant time by organising class parties in the many wonderful pubs and clubs around the city (help courtesy of my mate Eric Fitzgearld). You make sure the classes voice is heard at all levels of DIT Students’ Union and that they hear info that we are sending back.

There will be loads of campaigns during the year such as SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance) week, Mental Health week and Physical Health week along with help and info for money matters and accommodation rights. You can get involved by being part of the Welfare Crew. You could be throwing bananas at, I mean to, people or dressing up as a sperm and chasing an egg round the college.

There are also loads of clubs and societies to cater for every interest. Even if there isn’t one there, you could get 15 other like-minded people and set one up yourself.

Getting involved makes your time, here in DIT, the best it can be. Engineers from Cavan in Bolton St can meet fashion designers from Cork and business people from China and form life long friendships. It will make couch surfing a lot easier and safer!!

Even if you think that you would not be up for all the involvement, I would say give it a try. I was the shyest person in the world when I started college, but getting involved with class reps, clubs and campaigns, I got the confi-dence, skills and opportunity that would not be possible to get anywhere else.

Importantly, you are all part of the Students’ Union as you are a student in DIT. That means, anyone who works for the Students’ Union, works for YOU. All of us are here to help you and make sure your DIT years are the best so far and for a long time to come. If there is any-thing bothering you or you have a question or you want to get involved or ya just want a chat, pop into the local Students’ Union and we’ll sort ya out. There is nothing too small or too big and there is very rarely anything that we havnt seen before. So please talk to us about it and we’ll shall do our very best to sort it.

A WORD FROM: ERIC FITZGERALDSU VICE PRESIDENT

DITSU.IE - your on-line Student Hub

Hello there!

First thing’s first – congratulations on choos-ing DIT as your destination for the adventure that is third-level education over the next few years! You’ve some of the best years of your life ahead of you, when you’ll make some firm friends, have some amazing experiences and some unforgettable nights, and who knows, you might even learn a little something along the way!

My name’s Eric Fitzgerald and I’m your DIT Students’ Union Vice President for Services & Trading. First off, my title is horribly convo-luted, and I didn’t pick it. If I had to pick my own title, it’d be the Vice President for Craic! Essentially, it’s my job to ensure that there’s a steady flow of college nights out coming your way, from foam parties to drinks deals to big gigs and everything in between! I’m also here to organise the best deals and discounts for you, the students, as well as organising class parties for those of you who want to be the most popular person in your class!

There’s also a bit of a serious side to my job, too. I’m in charge of dealing with any facilities issues raised by students. Basically, if you’re an-noyed about anything to do with the building in which you’re learning, whether it’s broken chairs, crumbling walls, all of that stuff, or if you’re unhappy with any of the services being offered to you, like canteens, shops, coffee docks etc., just send me an email or give me a buzz. Vent whatever it is you need to vent and get it off your chest. I’ll do the legwork of following up your complaint and making sure that you get a swift resolution. I’m there to kick shins in DIT so you don’t have to!

Being a Vice President is my full-time job. I graduated from my course back in October 2010 and I’m currently serving my second term. Each of the three full-time officers of the Students’ Union – that’s me, Ciarán and David – was elected to their positions by the students of DIT. You get to tell us what to do, because you pay our wages – so use that opportunity while you have it!

Enough with the serious stuff, back to the fun and games! Freshers’ Week (see page 10) is our way of welcoming you to DIT, with four solid nights of party, followed by a couple of days’ rest before the biggest, best night out of the year, the DIT Freshers’ Ball! Headliners in the past have included The Blizzards, Fight Like Apes and The Rubberbandits, but we’ve got something even bigger up our sleeve for this year! Who’s headlining, I hear you ask? You’ll just have to read on further to find out…

It’s not just Freshers’ Week that we have in store for you though! Throughout the year, we’ve got a rake of epic events that we’re wait-ing to unleash on you all! From the Hallowe’en Ball to our Christmas Mayhem, right down to RAG Week (read more about this on page 18) and the DIT Ball, with a few club nights with cheap drink thrown in for good measure, we’re here to make sure that you’ve got as many op-portunities to let your hair down as possible!

Fancy being in the know about events before everyone else? Want to help out with the organisation and promotion of DITSU events? Want a reward party for your efforts at the end of each semester, guestlist into gigs and the chance to learn some vital skills from some industry experts? Join the DITSU Events Crew and get all this and more! You’ll find a sign-up form on ditsu.ie and we’ll have stands across all the sites during Freshers’ Week & Clubs & Socs Week.

That’s all from me for now, but make sure to read on and find out everything that’s in store for you as you begin your journey through DIT!

See you around! Eric

In September of last year, the Government announced that the project would indeed go ahead as proposed. In July, Dublin City Council approved the planning application - another firm commitment to the development. There have been a total of four objections made to the planning appli-cation since then, a very low number considering the scale of the project. This has been the result of a lot of careful consultation between all the stakehold-ers and is a credit to all involved.

The project is split into two main phases with phase one expected to be complete by September 2015. Phase one will relocate 70 percent of DIT students to the new campus. The final 30 percent i.e. Bolton St, will not be relocated until phase two, as it is the closest of all sites to the new campus.

If you would like to find out more about the development, which is very impressive, visit www.ggda.ie

If after looking at that you can’t deal with the excitement and are about to head up to the site with a shovel and flask of tea, we have just the thing for you. If you become a Governing Councillor, you can sit on the Grangegorman Standing Committee, allowing you to have input into the world-class development. You can’t say fairer than that!

Ciarán

Grangegorman will be the furure of DIT, providing a modern, purpose built campus. SU President Ciarán Nevin keeps us up to date with the latest developments.

You may or may not have heard about DIT Grangegorman by now. In short, it will see each of the DIT campus relocated to a single site in Dublin’s north inner city as opposed to the 39 different sites we currently occupy. This is an enormous project, particularly at a time when education spending is being cut left, right and centre. The project will be of enormous benefit to DIT students and to the local community.

DIT Students’ Union is an organisation that was established by students to represent them within DIT and further afield. Since it was first dreamt up, the organisation has developed into a very strong and effective body offering a ranges of services to students on top of playing a strong representative function.

If you’re feeling sick after working through that last paragraph then you should probably read no further as it could prove fatal. I am of course joking, while this is pretty heavy stuff, you cannot afford not to read it. This year, you may well have the chance to change DIT Students Union for many years to come. Read on to find out more...

UPDATE

Constitutional ReviewCiaran Nevin

What are you talking about? The DIT Students’ Union is bound by a document known as a “constitution” in all that it does. The current Constitution was adopted by the students of DIT in 2004, and has not changed in any way since then.

What has this got to do with anything?Well, everything really. The Constitution states how many elected officers there should be, how many class reps there should be, how decisions should be made on behalf of students etc.

Why are you even talking about this? The current constitution was created after a lot of consultation with students, and was designed to suit the student body of the time. I believe that we need to review the constitution so as make sure that DIT Students’ Union is fit for purpose.

Why now?Good question, in the 7 years since the current constitution was adopted there has been enormous change in DIT and nationally. We now have a large number of international students, mature students etc. We have dwindling numbers of those studying trades. DIT has moved from being 6 faculties to 4 colleges and will soon be united on one campus in Grangegorman. College has never been as expensive for students in the past 7 years as it is now.

In short: The issues are different, the students are different, the challenges are different and the college is dif-ferent but the Students’ Union is in many ways the same. I believe that it must change to suit the needs of students.

So what are you doing about it?Over the summer months, myself and a number of students have been submitting ideas and thoughts to a working group for their consideration. We will then begin the formal procedure of bringing a draft to our SU Governing Council. If Council decides that a review should take place it will result in a referen-dum in the middle of the second semester.

There ya go with the big words again. Whats a Referendum? This is your chance to have your say. The draft constitution will be put to a vote of all students, and you can chose to adopt it, or reject it and maintain the current constitution.

Interested? If you are really interested in getting involved in this, you should definitely become a Governing Councillor. Call down to your local SU office for more info.

Did you know? You can pop into your local Students' Union office at any time to have a chat with a Student Support Advisor about financial queries.

DITSU'S GUIDE TO STUDENT FINANCE

Finance is always a tricky subject for students. That’s why we have put together this 12 step guide, along with a few Top Tips, to help you stay in the black.

Shop in Lidl, Aldi, Tesco or Dunnes Stores and Super Value stores. Buy ‘own brand’ items – They are the same – they just don’t look fancy. Spar, Centra and Londis are cheaper now but BEWARE most of their stock is nearly twice the price of the supermarket so it pays not to shop after dark.Marks & Sparks and Superquinn are just too expensive for the average student. You can treat yourself when you are making the big bucks, after graduation, not grant pay day!.

Buy in bulk as it works out much cheaper in the long run. Eg a large sack of rice is very reasonable in the Asian/African food shops in town (esp. Parnell St). If you have a fairly big freezer, get down to your local butcher and stock up.

Avoid convenience foods and those pre-packed/ prepared meals. They are bad for your health, waistline and pocket.

Special offers, coupons and vouchers (post and online). Check out the offers on your supermarket receipt and in newspapers. You’d be surprised the savings you could make. Groupons are all the rage, but be careful of the deals that require you to text! Use your common sense, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

Shopping on an empty stomach is never a good idea. You buy too much. Make a list and go at a regular time each week. Calculate as you go (that’s a good habit to nurture) and become aware of the expensive items- can you get a better deal by chang-ing brand or store?

Bring a packed lunchIf you don’t it’s at least € 25 a week on lunch alone! With approx 30 weeks in the year, it makes sense to invest in a lunchbox. The sav-ing could be the price of a holiday or a few months rent. Think about it!

If you live nearby college, why not head home for lunch? This is a definite money saver. This can be good for the head too.

Check out the DIT Students’ Union shops. They exist for you the students and aim to provide relevant products at minimal cost. From the cheapest Insom-nia coffee in town to the Newspapers, the Sambos and snacks this is the best value you can get.

Charity shops are all around town. You get great bargains and it’s fun hunting for those hidden gems you may pick up!

Electricity providers are becoming more competitive but it is worth getting in the know when it comes to electricity usage and spend. Turn off the lights when you leave the room, plug out the telly and electrical items so as to try and save energy around the house. Wasting electricity and heating will cost you and fellow bill-payers! Keep an eye on the Immersion, Storage heaters and your bills.

If you are looking for second hand text books, check out the Book Connect Second Hand Book Exchange Service the Students’ Union provides. See www.ditsu.ie or contact your local SU office.

Did you work abroad for the summer? Check if there is any tax back due to you. In the States there is both Federal and State tax that you may be eligible for if you spent time working there.

Have you worked in the past and are returning to college? Be sure to source your Log on details for Revenue.ie and ensure you are availing of any tax back due or rent relief opportunities via Social wel-fare. There are loads of opportunities that you may not know about and now is the time. Rumour has it that this year’s budget announcements will further cut reliefs, so be sure to check this out now.

DIT STUDENTS' UNION AUNGIER STREET

SU OFFICEWell lads and lassies!

I’m Glenn Fitzpatrick, your Class Rep Convenor. It’s my job to work with the class reps based in Aungier Street and Temple Bar that you guys elect to make sure that your time here in DIT is the best it can be, both inside the classroom and outside it. First of all, I’d like to give a warm welcome to all of the incoming first years. Congratulations on making it this far, you’re in for a great few years. Also, I’d like to welcome back current students. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who’s put their faith in me to represent you guys. I won’t let you down.

This year, I’m hoping we can make an effort to keep students on campus while they’re not in class. I’d love to see an array of different things happening in the common area and again, I’d be most appreciative of any ideas you have. Over the next few weeks we’ll be going from class to class, recruiting new Class Reps. If we haven’t got to you then pop down to the office or stop me if you see me around the building.

It’s absolutely vital that every class has some-body to keep them in the loop about what’s happening on campus and in the wider stu-dent movement. Some classes are entitled to two or more Class Reps. The general rule is one Rep per 30 students. Again, pop down to the office if you’re interested in getting involved in DITSU this year in any way or form.

We’ll be holding elections at the first Class Rep Meeting of the year. I’d especially like to extend the invite to get involved to incoming first years and mature students. It’s important to us that we can repre-sent the entire student body.

If you have any queries at all then you can email me at [email protected] or alternatively, drop down to the office. Shaz is your Student Support Advisor (SSA for short) and she’s tremendous.

Here’s to a great year both academically and recreationally.

2020

This year, DIT Students’ Union is proud to be fundraising on behalf of The Ross Nu-gent Foundat ion for RAG Week 2012 and throughout the 2011/12 academic year.

UPDATE

Eric FitzgeraldRAG Week 2012

RAG Week stands for Rais-ing and Giving Week and each year, DIT Students’ Union chooses one charity to fundraise for through-out the year. I’d like to take you through the story of The Ross Nugent Founda-tion and tell you more about this extraordinarily worthy cause.

Ross Nugent was a talented, creative, fun-loving 18-year-old guy from Malahide in Dublin. He loved nothing more than drawing, sketching, playing guitar, singing or just being with friends and family. He was well known in his locality and was Assistant Head Boy at Malahide Community School.

Back in September 2009, Ross began to notice back pain, which only worsened as time went on. MRIs and X-Rays returned all clear and Ross and his family were baffled as to the cause of the pain. Having met a neurologist socially, his parents decided to contact them, desperate for a result. Within two days the neurologist had replied and called around to the Nugent family home. He was gravely concerned by Ross’ continually worsening pain and his weight loss and arranged to have him brought into Beaumont Hospital A&E for some tests.

On January 6th, 2010, the Nugent family received the most awful news imaginable; Ross had been diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, an extremely rare and vicious form of cancer. Ross underwent all sorts of therapy, including chemotherapy, to try and combat this illness. He remained positive and dignified throughout and vowed to raise money to buy equipment for St Claire’s Oncology Ward in Beaumont, where he was being treated, once he got better.

Sadly for Ross and the Nugent family, that day never came. On May 15th, 2010, at 6.55am, Ross passed away with his family by his side. Sandra, Don and Emma’s grief was immeasurable, but from their grief came hope – hope that Ross’ wish to raise money for a new blood pres-sure monitor for St Claire’s would be realised. Since The Ross Nugent Foundation was established, Ross’ friends, family and all supporters of the Foundation have far exceeded this wish. A blood pressure monitor costs around €3,500 and, to date, the Foundation has raised in excess of €40,000 in supporting Ross’ noble aim. The equipment has even been designed in some cases by Ross’ favourite designer, Ed Hardy, in keep-ing with a promise made to him by his mother Sandra.

Page 21: Toast Vol 04: Issue 02

2121

Many of Ross’ friends were students in DIT and on May 3rd, 2010, they decided to take action and bring Ross’ story and the good work of the Foundation to the attention of the students of DIT. At a special meet-ing of the DITSU Governing Council to select a RAG Week charity for 2011/12, a presentation was made on behalf of the Foundation, implor-ing DIT Students’ Union to choose it as their charity for the forthcoming academic year. Their story touched the hearts of the representatives present at that meeting and The Ross Nugent Foundation was selected ahead of seven other charities with an overwhelming majority.

Since then, we here at DITSU have held a number of meetings with The Ross Nugent Foundation and what struck me in particular is their tremendous energy and their capacity to create something hugely positive from such overwhelming grief. Sandra, Don, Emma and all of the Foundation have offered us every help and support possible and we want to repay their faith in us by doing all we can to fundraise for The Ross Nugent Foundation throughout 2011/12.

This year, we will be organising a number of fundraising activities to help you raise money for the Foundation. These include bucket collec-tions in both first and second semester in the city centre as well as Ross’ hometown of Malahide, as well as bungee jumps, sponsored dives, fundraising at our events as well as a special “Rock for Ross” night. The key part of fundraising, however, will be you guys and girls and your mad, crazy fundrais-ing ideas.

We need you to come to us with your ideas for fundraising and what you want to do to raise money! In the past we’ve had people shave their heads, wax their chests, run marathons, eat disgusting stuff in Iron Stomachs, push beds, busk and loads more besides! If you’ve got an idea, be it sedate or mental, call down to your local Students’ Union office and grab a sponsorship form – it’s that simple!

Keep an eye on ditsu.ie for more information throughout the year, or check out rossnugentfoundation.ie for more information on this fantastic charity.

DIT STUDENTS' UNION BOLTON STREET

SU OFFICE

Hello to all you Bolton heads,

Sadly we don’t have a Class Rep Convenor in DIT Bolton St yet. This is kind of a big deal. Bolton St is one of the biggest sites and really needs a local elected officer.

The Class Rep Convenor is a part time paid of-ficer and plays a number of vital roles. They en-sure that every class has an elected Class Rep by working with David Keogan, so that your issues can be dealt with as quickly as possible. They also ensure that there are local events organised by working with Eric Fitzgerald to keep you entertained. They also give you a voice at the highest levels in DIT, through communicating your issues to myself.

Bolton St could really suffer without a Class Rep Convenor.

You can change all this though. This is your call of duty. Get up off that couch, pull up your socks, and call down to the SU office to find out why your Union needs you.

Do it!,

Rent of box rooms in a house/apartment range from €250 a month and we’ve come across stu-dio/one bed apartments going for approx €500 a month. Depending on your budget, require-

ments and location, prices vary and you should carefully consider standard of accommodation

and commuting times. Ask if bills are included or charged per

month or per week.

Laundry if no washing machine, supermarket, bus or luas stop, doctor, dentist, Dublin bus ticket

national commuting areas and stations.

No, they need to get your permission.T he land-lord should treat your rented accommodation as your home, or unless they have made priory ar-

rangements with you. Generally a landlord must give 24 hours notice before entering a premises.

It is very unlikely that the landlord has insurance for tenants personal items in a rented places. You are responsible to insure your personal

valuables and tenancy insurance is available. You can ask a landlord before you move in, what is covered under the property insurance but it is unlikely that any of your gear would be though.

The advantage of some student Purpose Built accommodation ,is that bills can be included in

the price, but if you’re renting or sharing privately your bills will include heating, oil or gas, electric-

ity, waste, tv license, broadband etc. Some of these bills may be optional but remember you

are required by law to have a Tv licence.

DIT STUDENTS' UNION KEVIN STREET

SU OFFICEWelcome to Kevin Street!

Hi, I’m David Rice a 23 year old electrical and control engineering student (DT009). This is my first year as class rep convenor. I’m looking forward to working with all the students in Kevin St.

You are one of a lucky few to be a part of Kevin St. other campuses label us as “nerds” or “geeks” but hey when did that become a bad thing, every one is a closet nerd at heart. This may also have something to do with the ratio of boys to girls, coming in at a startling 3:1 so there is room for improvement.

Our building arrangement can be a bit strange so here it is explained the old building is grey the annex is red brick and for the electricians its church lane.

Your Class REP Convenor David

On the plus side there are tons of places to eat close by on Camden St. or you can hit the canteen on site for some food. There are a million things to do nearby after all the city is your campus.

I’ll see you guys soon, if you have any problems or questions I’m always at hand to help so feel free to come talk to me.

See you 'round,David

In today’s economic climate graduate recruiters are increas-ingly looking for more out of their applicants than just a degree. Not only do they want to see a wider range of experi-ence, but they also want to see evidence of how it’s gained. Volunteering is the ideal way to gain those skills and to gather evidence along the way. At DIT we actively encourage students to give a little back. So volunteer, get involved and be a graduate with a difference.

FEATURE

Maoliosa Mc Laughlin

Not everyone who starts in dit is in their late teens and just back from the leaving cert holiday in Ibiza. Here, Maoliosa shares her experience of start ing in dit as a mature student.

For me deciding to go back to college wasn’t the easiest of decisions. I had toyed with the idea for years but the thought of actually giving up a well paying I.T. job that I didn’t particu-larly like for a no paying student position made me physically shudder. The thought of having to start a career all over again and go back to the classroom petrified me, not to mention giving up the monthly pay packet.

I had never felt old in my life and for good reason: I am not old.

"

Yet as luck would have it, that decision was no longer in my hands. After 10 years I lost my job. After the initial devastation and trying tirelessly to find another job I began to rethink my future. After much deliberation I decided to go back to college. Drama had always been a passion of mine and being somewhat of a drama queen I thought why not try make a career of it. After a long and painful process I was offered a place in DIT.

The first day starting college was one of the most nerve racking, exciting and well I’m not going to lie, down right terrifying moments of my life. I had no clue what to expect and the zone that usually housed my comfort had blatantly gone and emigrated on me. I had never felt old in my life and for good reason. I’m not old. Thirty in years but thirteen in maturity. But that first day, surrounded by eighteen year olds I couldn’t help but feel slightly out of place. There was also the time-table to contend with and the aimlessly wandering the corridors trying to find classrooms. It was a major shock to the system to say the least.

I’m not going to lie and paint this idyllic picture of college life because well it just isn’t like that especially in the beginning. It’s tough, it’s hard work and it’s a big adjustment but it’s worth every minute of it. You will go through the many fazes that I think every student goes through at one point or another. You’ll love it, you’ll hate it, you’ll want to quit, you’ll want to scream, you’ll want more sleep but most of all you’ll be proud of your achievements. Everything worth having is worth working for. The good thing about DIT is the many support services they have. If you have any issues there are support services there for it. Financial, Emotion, Social, Religious, you name it they support you.

As well as the hard work, you should also prepare yourself for the hard play. With college life comes the compulsory social life. Not only do I recommend you get involved with this part of college life, I compel you to. It’s the only way to let your hair down and to bond with your class mates. Throughout the year there is never any shortage of social events so get involved or join one of the many clubs or societies of DIT.

My advice to any first year is to be positive, to take each day as it comes and most importantly to enjoy every minute of it. So be prepared for a rollercoaster ride and one of the most rewarding journeys of your life.

DIT STUDENTS' UNION RATHMINES

SU OFFICEHey all you lovely Mountjoy Square lads and lassies!

Before I begin my introductions I would like to congratulate you for choosing DIT Rathmines. We may be a small campus but it is common knowledge that Rathmines houses the finest looking students in all of Dublin. Get in.

My name is Ciara Smyth, I’m a second year Drama student and I’m your Class Rep Convenor for the year. What the balls does that mean? It means I’ll be skulking around Rath-mines and Francis Street ensuring class reps are elected and that you’re enjoying college life as much as physically possible. I’ll also be chairing the class rep meetings and informing you of all the DIT Student Union goings on.

In Rathmines it’s a fairly safe to assume that you are either studying Music or Drama. Which means that not only did you have to get the points but you also more than likely had to audition for a place in the college. Another congratulations in order.

The first few weeks will be a bit mental but there will be plenty of chances to get to know your classmates and indeed the rest of DIT. Freshers’ week is set to be intense so my ad-vice is to get your class together and head out to any one, or all, of the events. Between the paint party, the foam party and the Freshers Ball you’ll be well acquainted with everyone in no time! As far as the Student Union goes there will be loads of chances to get involved. You could run for class rep, volunteer for the ‘Ents Crew or just give us a hand by putting up posters. No matter how you get involved, I promise you’ll have a laugh and won’t regret it.

As far of cuisine is concerned, Rathmines has arguably the best location of all the DIT campus’. Case and point, we are a 43 second brisk walk away from McDonalds. We also have burritos, pizza, chinese, chips, burgers and I’m fairly certain you can buy an apple somewhere. There is an abundance of bars and coffee shops to choose from and if you’re feeling wild there’s a gym next door and a cinema across the road. And we’re a ten minute walk away from town.

Before I get carried away talking about food and junk, a little word about the course work. Performance based courses are tough going and we spend a huge amount of time in college. Stay on top of your work, go to class and if you need a hand don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you have a problem you can come to me or talk to our brilliant and attractive Student Support Advisor, Sharon. If you have any questions or need to give out about something or even if you just want a chat I’m always around so please don’t hesitate to come over to me. Chances are you’ll prob-ably hear me before you see me anyway!

See you soon guys,Ciara

Welcome to you first year students, and welcome back to the rest of you, and best of luck with the coming year. This article is dedicated to you! It’s about how to eat healthily during the year in a way that’s easy to do and easy on the bank balance as well.

The main way to ensure you stay healthy is to get some exercise and to eat healthily. This doesn’t mean you have to go completely without having a bar of chocolate or run a marathon twice a week. For many of you it will mean simply making some slight changes or introductions to your normal eating habits.

The easiest way to eat healthily is to follow the old-faithful ‘food-pyramid’. The ‘food-pyramid’ works on the basis that the foods at the bottom are the foods you should eat most of. i.e. Bread, pasta, rice & potatoes, followed by the 5-a-day of fruit and vegetables. You should eat about 3 portions of meat, fish and dairy products a day followed by the sugary, fatty foods being eaten ‘sparingly’ (a couple of bars of chocolate a week won’t do you any harm). The pyramid is designed for the normal human body, so that following it will make the body run properly.

To get started with some healthy and affordable eating I’ve given an example of a recipe that follows the guidelines of the food-pyramid. The dish is easy to make and affordable, costing less than a take-away or a trip to McDonalds. You’ve nothing to lose by trying it and you might even like it. Depending on the time of year you can have a side salad or vegetables with it. Enjoy and happy cooking!!

Bia Mall is a new society based in Cathal Brugha Street that will focus on the aims and objectives of the worldwide organisation; ‘Slow Food Movement’ (slowfoodireland.com). Slow Food Movement believes that food is good, clean and fair. They believe that the food we eat should taste good, it should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health.

The society has been set up by a dedicated commit-tee of students all of whom are in different culinary courses in CBST. Our leader Barry Bryan has faithfully and strategically led the way for the society and is the ‘fuel to the fire that is; Bia Mall DIT’.

At the moment the artisan food scene in Ireland is thriving with new producers appearing all over the country including anything from jams & chutneys to Irish Cheese production. We want to create awareness of these producers and their products as well as the establishments in Ireland which promote these artisan producers by using the goods in their restaurants.

At the beginning of the year there will be some shameless advertising of the events we have organised for the year including;

Talks from the likes of Darina Allen, Trevor Sar-•gent and Professor Patrick Wall on the ideals of the Slow Food Movement,

Trips to the production sites of some of •Irelands leading artisan food producers such as Glebe Brehan (producer of raw milk goats’ cheese).

Artisan Food Fair – featuring samples from real •artisan food producers and an introduction from Ella McSweeney.

Most of these will be held in The Brugha; we will be in all the DIT. campuses, both north and south of the Liffey over the year. We’ll even be doing a cook off in the middle of O’Connell Street in November.

Bia Mall is not exclusive to CBST so if you are a specialist in car mechanics from Bolton Street or the next marketing wiz from Aungier Street, get involved and take an interest.

Keep an eye out for us and if you are interested in food, wine and having a good time then become a member of the society and take full advantage of the fantastic and insightful events we have run-ning throughout the year.

STEP ONE: Decide where you would like to go...

STEP TWO: Choosing where to stay...

Well, you have got together with a few of your mates/partner over a couple of pints, and de-cided that you would like to go on a bit of a holiday to check out the scenery, culture, history, nightlife, weather, women/men in a new city - but you have no idea where to go, how much you will spend or what you will see!! Well here are some handy tips to take into consideration when planning that all important budget holiday or weekend break.

Identifying what you would like to do on your holiday, is certainly the first thing you need to think about. Is it a lads football weekend? Are you a history and culture buff? Do you want to sit by a beach drinking cocktails whilst working on that all important tan? Luckily with Ryanair and Aer Lingus travelling from Dublin Airport to Europe is really easy, and can be awfully cheap. Getting a flight to an exotic destination for the same price as a return train ticket to Cork is always a cause for celebration.

Hostelworld and Hostelbookers are your place to look for that quirky hostel you will call home for a few days. However, getting the cheapest deal might not be the best deal. Filter your results by “top rated”, and take note of how many reviews have been written – obviously the higher rated, with the highest number of reviewers is your best option. Take a look at how highly the location has been rated, you don’t want to be staying 10 miles out of the city centre, and have to catch a bus in, or a very expensive taxi home in the wee hours!

The Dublin Airport website www.dublinairport.com has a great little search tool, where you can check which airline serves the destination you have chosen, and if there are two airlines flying the same route, you will be able to pick up a bar-gain flight! Flying on a Thursday and Tuesday are often the cheapest days of the week to head out.

Get hold of a Hostelworld gold card (often given out in various Fresher Packs), and save yourself the booking fee.

STEP THREE: Sightseeing...

TOP TIPS:

In the next edition, we will be exploring various festivals and activities you can enjoy in Europe, and how to get to and enjoy them student style!

Rather than just sitting at the beach or pool nursing a rotten hangover, get out and see some of the city. Often Hostels are great at telling you the best places to go. Tours can be pricey, but you also get someone telling you what exactly you are looking at. If you do decide to go on a tour, shop around, there will be many tour operators providing the same trips. If there are a few of you, you can even try and haggle the price down a bit.

Take your student card or Travelcard, as you will often get a student rate into vari-ous attractions (ask in your local SU Office if you do not have a Student Travelcard).

Visas – You can Travel to most countries in Europe without a visa on an Irish passport. Check out www.dfa.ie to see if you need a visa or visa waiver. Money – Getting out money from an ATM is the best way to access money within Europe. Most Irish banks offer a no fee withdrawal system in Europe, both within the Eurozone, and other currencies.

Language - it is always appreciated by locals if you learn a few key phrases of their language. Please, thank you, hello and goodbye and the universal language of smiling are a must. Most tourist areas will have sufficient English speak-ers, but if in doubt, invest in a phrasebook, or download an app for your smartphone.

Eating – Don’t hole yourself up in McDonalds, try some of the local food – it could spark a taste-bud revolution! Eating street food is often very cheap and convenient, and won’t put as much of a dent in your wallet as a restaurant.
