The history of the Individual clubs within Toastmasters International - District 69
These histories are arranged alphabetic order. Similar to the district Directory
These club records have been compiled form hand written records, original documents (if
available) and sourced from various information supplied by club members.
Sincere thanks to all those members who have corrected the information and added to the histories.
NOTE
A starting point for the electronic record is Toastmasters International listing of clubs as at 1st July 2013. There are
many clubs that have been suspended within the boundaries of District 69 since 1958 when Australia’s 2nd club,
Toowoomba Toastmasters, was chartered. There is an unknown number of proposed clubs that never proceeded
to obtain a formal charter for whatever reason.

Russ Walkington Presents Charter
A Brief History of Gold Coast Toastmasters Club
In 1969 when Gold Coast club chartered, Toastmasters was quite different from the way it is today.
There were no Divisions or even Districts in Australia then and Toastmasters was administered by the
Territorial Council of Australia (TCA) in Sydney. When Gold Coast was chartered on 27 October 1969, it
was part of the TCA. On 1st July 1971 the TCA was re-aligned to become District 69 with 26 Clubs
north of 30th parallel and District 70 with 45 clubs in the rest of Australia. Russ Walkington, founder of
Gold Coast, and many other clubs, became the very first District 69 Governor.
Before that, our club was conceived at a meeting of the TCA in Sydney. With only four clubs in the
whole of Australia, Russ and his team set out on an expansion programme, establishing a new club
every fortnight in Sydney. Looking north they decided the Gold Coast should have club, even though no
one up here knew much about Toastmasters back then.
Gold Coast was in formation for several years before reaching that elusive goal of 20 members.
Eventually the club chartered in 1969 and Sir Bruce Small, Mayor of the Gold Coast, officiated at the
Charter dinner.
One Charter member, Basil Coates, has been a continuous member for the entire 43 years. Members
enjoy hearing Basil’s stories about the early days of Toastmasters on the Gold Coast, as well as stories
about his travels around Australia and visits to other Toastmasters clubs.
In 1971 Area 6 was formed with Gold Coast and two other clubs, Jacaranda in Grafton and Summerland
in Lismore, both in NSW. Gold Coast has remained in Area 6 ever since, although the other clubs in the
Area have changed many times over the years. In 1985 there were 7 clubs in the Area, 3 in Qld and 4 in
NSW, ranging from Southport to Ballina. The first clubs sponsored by Gold Coast were Twin Towns and
Southport and Gold Coast has helped establish many other clubs on the Coast. In 1977 Divisions were
introduced and Gold Coast was in Division 3 for the next 12 years, until it became Southern Division, as
it is now.
Apart from the difference in administration, there was another significant difference in Toastmasters
when the club chartered, for until 1973 it was an ‘all male’ organisation. Vida Hunt was the first female
member of Gold Coast Toastmasters and she became President of the club in 1979.
The Club hosted the National Convention of 1971, which is still regarded as one of the best Conventions
ever. In 1972 Gold Coast hosted the first District 69 Convention. On that occasion the club entertained
the World President of Toastmasters International. Gold Coast hosted the District 69 Convention again in
1976, 1985 and 2000.
With the name Gold Coast the club has no ties to any particular part of the Coast, but is free to meet
anywhere in this City. One of the first meetings was in Coolangatta and for many years the club met at
various venues in Burleigh Heads. The move to our present meeting place at Mermaid Beach in 2003
coincided with us having a website for the first time. These two events gave a welcome boost to our
membership and ever since we have been above charter strength, often with over 30 members. In 2010-
2011 Gold Coast was the largest club in District 69 with well over 40 members.
In 2009 Gold Coast celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a dinner at the Rugby Leagues Club in
Broadbeach Waters. We welcomed many distinguished guests including District 69 Governor Coral
McVean and our founder Russ Walkington, who now lives on the Gold Coast.
12 months later we returned to that venue to celebrate our 1000th meeting, with District Governor Bruce
George attending. Our guest speaker was Mark Hunter, Toastmasters World Champion of Public
Speaking 2009. When our second speaker was unable to attend, Russ Walkington stepped in to give us
another inspiring speech, which demonstrated the lasting benefits of membership in Toastmasters.
There have been times when Gold Coast has had problems with membership, like many other clubs, but
there has always been a strong core of dedicated members who have brought the club through these
difficult times. The importance of listening to our members, knowing their goals and what they want on
the programmes, combined with our emphasis on humour in meetings, encourage members to keep
attending our great Gold Coast Toastmasters Club.

Susann Treston, on the 2nd March wrote
It appears that Club records were lost in Cyclone Larry, so it appears that there is
not much history preserved. I hope the article below is at least something.
On September 15th 2009 the club celebrated its 40th birthday with a grand lunch meeting at Rosco’s upstairs function
room. Current and many past members attended and indeed spoke. Whereas some older members may well
remember, most of the club’s records were swallowed up by the Johnstone River after Cyclone Larry. Current
Toastmasters have been researching the remaining minutes and have found that the club was strictly for men in the
beginning with their wives allowed to “yak in the breezeways” so long as they cooked and served refreshments. The
first president was Ralph Harland but since Toastmasters elect a new president every year, the position has been held
by many men and later women because the fairer sex was eventually let in, in the mid 70’s with Alma Smith, Norma
Stewart and Connie Riera being the first three. Mrs Riera remains an active member, still able to inspire and mentor
newcomers. Some presidents believed in doing everything themselves and one is recorded to have said that “all that
is needed is an executive committee of two where one does not turn up”. Other presidents have taken the view that
he should do nothing and numerous committees should run the club. It is also interesting to note that neckties had to
be worn to meetings until finally it was considered excusable not to in the summer months.
Meetings were originally held at the Queen’s Hotel with dinners incorporated. There are motions passed, according to
old records, as a consequence of the excessive cost of the meals which were $1.50 at the time. It was thought $1.20
ought to be enough.

A Speech by Bette Howard on the occasion of the club’s 30th Anniversary
24/9/2013 – 30th Anniversary Dinner for Ipswich Toastmasters Club 30 years and it doesn’t seem a day to long…. In 1983 I was a member of a music group led by Joyce Rogers. Suddenly she mentioned “Toastmasters” and I should join because I liked to talk a lot. At home I quickly reached for my trusty dictionary and found the meaning to be an MC or proposer of a toast. I could do that and have a few rinks of water of course. Joyce was a member of MDI, Brisbane and had been asked to start a new Ipswich Toastmaster to replace the former club from the 60’s and early 70’s. I then became a financial member by 28th July 1983 and a charter member on 26th September 2013. API Brisbane was our sponsor club, led by Ivy Foster, Arthur Gowrie, Dorothy Egan, Ted Burton and daughter Judith and Deidre Lavarack who became a sponsor with Joyce. Our demo meeting, held at the Humanities Building, knew enough interested community members to know we WOULD have a vital club. Josie Wright, a former Ipswich Toastmaster, was excited to hear those magic words IPSWICH TOASTMASTERS After 10 years when the former club had disbanded when their meeting place, the North Star Hotel, was demolished to make way for the Ipswich Mall. A management Committee was soon established with a former South Epican TM, Mike Burdette, the President. Other roles were quickly filled except for Secretary. Arthur Gowrie spied Joan Scott trying to hide behind one of the pillars in the auditorium; in a loud voice he announced Joan Scott will be our Secretary. Joan loved TM, but S Secretary she gained the dubious honour of the most “Amended Secretary” – even the amendments had to be amended! I can assure you there was lots of laughter at our business meetings!! Our first TM meeting then took place at the Australia Post Institute rooms at the back of the old Ipswich Post Office. You had to be agile in those days to climb up onto the loading dock! Ivy always brought along her little fold up table lectern and when we moved to Claremont Special School, Garret Adams made the beautiful wooden lectern we still use today.
Early membership fluctuated from 30 to 36. Even though we were a very social and fun club, you had trouble getting on the programme to complete the 15 speeches in the Competent Toastmaster Manual. Club members regularly visited Wynnum, Gatton, Stanthorpe, Warwick, MDI, Satellite, Garden City and others. At Darling Downs Club we broke down the strict barriers of those mountain men. However, it took quite a few years for them to admit female members. Early club members also included Bruce and Judy Moulton, Rob, Pamela, Duncan and Gwenda Robson, Dani Rogers, Noelene Lappin, John O’Sullivan, Jenny Eckert, Dudley Cowan, Lance Thompson, Bill Steentsma. Les Miller was Club Treasurer for many years. In 1973 Colin Broom won the District 69 International Speech Contest and in our new club, we have had many brilliant speakers to follow in his footsteps. Finalists have included Joyce and Dani Rogers, Dudley Cowan, Lyle Thompson and myself.
District 69 champions have been Dani Rogers (twice I think), Dudley Cowan (Humorous), Lyle Thompson (Table Topics). In 1987 our club sponsored Rosewood Toastmasters of which Noelene and I were sponsors and Josie and Joyce were mentors. Since becoming a Toastmaster my life has continued to be fantastic, opening many doors. It has been a pleasure to have shared so many years of my life with many of you as very special friends. I wish Ipswich Toastmasters Club and members the success of the past and present to carry on into a fabulous future.
Bette Howard
