Message from our District Governor

Cynthia A Brown, DTM

Dear Fellow Toastmaster,

As I return home from the International Convention in

Kuala Lumpur, I am thankful for the confidence you have

placed in me to serve as your District Governor. We are

District 38, Select Distinguished, 2013-2014, together we

garnered at least 5% growth in new clubs, at least 5%

Message from our District Lt. Governor of Education

and Marketing

Hello Fellow Toastmasters,

Thank you for the Kuala Lumpur Malaysian

experience. I would like to share my once

in a lifetime trip with you. First, as Lt.

Governor of Education and Training, I had

the honor and privilege of judging ten

speech contestants in the first round of the

International Speech Contest Competition.

Although, I have judged speech contestants

several times in the past, this experience

was very special to me and will forever

reside close to my heart.

The winner of the 2014 Toastmaster

International Speech contest is Dananjaya

Hettiarachchi from Sri Lanka. The title of his

speech is “I See Something ”. The premise

is simple yet relatable to all of us. Basically,

he kept stating that he saw something in

someone but didn’t know what it was. As a

mentor and a mentee, I have said this to

myself many times just as I’m sure you

have too. This experience only makes me

want to participate even more in contests.

You never know what you can achieve until

you try.

I was also fortunate enough to meet our

new Toastmaster International President,

Mohammed Murad. He was kind to show

me his welcome custom. He grabbed my

shoulders steering them from side to side

allowing our cheeks to slide next to each

other. This is done instead of a handshake.

It was nice to experience different greeting

customs. I look forward to reading his

articles in the Toastmaster magazines.

During the Saturday night celebration, I

witnessed a dance floor full of people. My

best guess would be approximately 100

people on this dance floor. They were

dancing to Y.M.C.A.

The more you participate, the

more you grow, learn, and

appreciate the entire

Toastmaster process.

Imagine the crowd going wild dancing and

singing to this song. After all, this is where

it all began. Toastmasters, was founded

by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley in a basement

of a YMCA in 1924-almost 90 years ago.

I was moved to tears thinking he must be

looking down on this moment in

amazement. Ninety years young and this

organization has grown from a hand full of

people in a basement of a YMCA in

California to a world-wide leadership and

communication empire with over 313,000

members representing 216 countries and

growing strong.

Based on the above, I encourage you to

get involved:

Obtaining your DTM

Reminiscing to the day I joined

Toastmasters International, almost 9

years ago, the thought of attending a

conference in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia did

not enter my mind. But since I joined, I

got involved in the program, including

entering into speech contests, judging

contests, organizing “Friday Fun Night” at

our Spring 2014 District 38 Conference,

receiving my DTM and now becoming Lt

Governor of Education and Training

leading me to Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

Get involved and see where

Toastmasters International takes you.

A Fellow Toastmaster and member of

Professionally Speaking of Jenkintown, Dan

Dougherty is being recognized by a national

health organization. Dan has been a member

of Toastmasters for seven years and just

achieved his ACG and is working on his ALS.

Dan is a person with epilepsy for 32 years and

an advocate for this mysterious disorder.

My fellow District 38 Toastmasters

For the past two years I have been

the representative of our district for

the International Speech

competition. This year the

competition took me to Kuala

Lumpur Malaysia. While the results

may not have been what we hoped

for, I know I would have never

reached that level without your help.

A note of thanks from Aaron Beverly

The outpouring of support and well wishes

has been overwhelming. I am truly

blessed to be a part of such a strong and

caring District.

I do not know what the future may hold for

me, but I do know one thing. District 38

will always have my heart, my respect,

and my sincerest appreciation

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Aaron Beverly

In 2013, Dan spoke to 26 organizations about

living with epilepsy and also had his story

published in a number of publications (Notably

WHYY’s Newsworks.com). HealthCentral.com

found Dan’s story and thought it was perfect

story for educating the public about epilepsy

through a documentary video. A production

crew came to Dan’s house to interview him

and his parents in May. Dan’s story is up and

Beloved Toastmaster Norm Logan passed

away on August 12, 2014, at the age

of 85. Norm was Toastmaster for 15 years

and was active in two clubs, Lower Bucks

and Washington Crossing Toastmasters.

During the past 9 years, Norm served

dutifully in the role of Sergeant-at-Arms

and “Official” Humorist for both clubs. In

fact, he only missed one meeting during

his entire Toastmasters career; it was

Valentine's Day, February 14, 2008, and

he insisted on taking his wife out to dinner.

Last year, Norm lost his wife of sixty years.

Since then Norm has considered his

Toastmaster's friends his extended family.

Norm participated and won many Speech

contests, making it to the District competition

on several occasions. He was always willing

to help out his clubs and fellow Toastmasters.

Norm also served bravely in the armed forces

during the Korean War.

Norm's smile, wit and friendship will be sorely

missed. We are sure he is telling jokes to all

of the angels and making them laugh.

In honor of Norm Logan, the Washington

Crossing Club will also be known as The

Norm Logan Memorial Club.

We Honor and Remember

For the first time in its history, the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games was held in

New Jersey, from June 14 – 21, 2014, at sites throughout Mercer County –

including Rider University. Nearly 3,500 athletes traveled to the Garden State

from all over the country to complete in 16 Olympic-style team and individual

sports, with the support of 1,000 coaches, 10,000 volunteers and an anticipated

70,000 spectators. Elliot Dennis, Monica Ruschil and Mike Booth, among other

members from Princeton Toastmasters Club volunteered their time and talent to

support this Special Olympics.

Area 53 club earns President’s Distinguished Status for

Straight Year

Our Vice President of Public Relations (Dave Robbie) sends

a meeting recap to all members the day after each club

meeting. It’s a great way to keep in touch with members

who weren’t able to attend the meeting and a nice reminder

for those that did attend. He also includes a preview of the

next meeting to encourage people to attend that meeting.

We started doing meeting recaps last year, as a result of an

article in the June 2013 Toastmasters magazine.

If other clubs wanted to have different people do it at each

meeting, there are several good options;

· Have the General Evaluator do it

· Have the TMOD do it

· Assign it as a regular role (like timer, table topics

master, etc).

PPL Power Talkers club, a private corporate club in

Allentown, PA, achieved President’s Distinguished status for

the fifth consecutive year in 2013-2014.

During these five years, 14 members attained Competent

Communicator status; 9 attained Advanced Communicator

Bronze, Silver, or Gold status; 11 attained Competent Leader

/ Advanced Leader status; and 40 new members joined.

Additionally, the two most recent area governors are

members of the club.

“We’re very fortunate to have such dedicated members,” said

Susan K. Smith, the club’s current president. “Everyone helps

our newer members, and our officers do a terrific job of

encouraging members to take on leadership roles.”

The club, in Area 53 of Division E, has been active since

2000.

We all have a book inside of us waiting to

be written and published. Having your book

published could provide you a lot of

opportunities. I recently published my first

book, “Cash In On Your Differences.” The

book has led me to a lot of speaking

engagements, both inside and outside the

Toastmasters organization. After hearing

my speech, people often come to me and

tell me that they want to write their first

book too, but they don’t know how or where

to start.

In writing your first book, if you are a

Toastmasters member, you have more

advantages than those who are not even

though you have not made any speeches

yet. If you have done some speeches or

have completed the first 10 speeches from

the Competent Communication Manual,

that is even better. Some of these

speeches can be your source material for

your first book.

Here are some tips to consider:

2. What to write about? Well, because it

is your book, you could write about

anything including your exes. My

suggestion is you write about

something you like; something which is

your passion. If the topic relates to your

passion, you are more likely

knowledgeable about it already, and

you would not have difficulty in doing

your research for more material, if you

have to.

3. How many pages? It’s up to you, but

don’t underestimate the difficulty you

will face in filling out those blank

pages.

As it’s your first book, you should write

a book of 100 pages or less. The late

Charlie “Tremendous” Jones said if you

write a book of more than 100 pages,

you write it for your own ego. Here is

an interesting statistic: most people

who buy your book don’t read your

book. Only 5 percent of those who buy

your book will read your book. And only

3 percent of those who read your book

will read it from cover to cover.

Therefore, you should write a book that

people could finish reading in just one

or two sittings.

1. Where to start? Start with the first 10

speeches you are supposed to give at

your club. Because each of your

speech has to follow a structure

(beginning, main body, and

conclusion), it can be later turned into a

chapter of the book. If your book is

non-fiction, each of these chapters can

stand on its own. All you have to do is

find the main topic of the book and use

each of your speech as a relevant

chapter. Then you would have your

first book and become a Competent

Communicator at the same time.

Writing your first book can be very

challenging especially when English is your

second language. As an immigrant, I am

still learning English every single day and I

am currently writing another book. My

challenge to you is that if I could write my

first book, why not you and why not now?

Members’ Story

Ken Krawchuk, DTM

Mr. Krawchuk is a

professional public

speaker, and has

been a member of

Toastmasters

International since

1997, achieving his

Distinguished

Toastmaster award in

2006.

In 2008 he was

honored with the

District's

prestigious John E.

Foster DTM

Achievement Award

for his service to

Toastmasters.

He is running as the

Libertarian candidate

for Governor of

Pennsylvania in

2014.

Butterflies? Hah! With me, it was more like

pterodactyls.

Many people are uncomfortable speaking in

public. Some are nervous. Others are just plain

scared. They should all count themselves lucky,

because me, I was downright terrified. After

suffered an asthma attack half way through a

question I was asking to my congressman, I was

approached by a member of audience. I wish I

could remember his name—it was something long

and Greek—because his introduced

Toastmasters to me. That was the first step of a

journey that forever changed my life.

Before very long I found myself hiding in the back

of the room at my first Toastmasters meeting. I

briefly considered volunteering for Table Topics—

very briefly!—but my heart was hammering so

hard at the thought that I’m certain my voice

would have thumped in har-har-har-harmony. It

took me three meetings before I finally mustered

enough courage to give it a try, then another six

months before I dared to chance giving my

Icebreaker speech. And when I did, all I could

manage was to stand there in the front of the

room and read directly off the paper in my

shaking hands. The only eye contact that day

was me looking at the letter “I” on my script.

At every step along the way, the impetus was

overwhelming to give in to my fears and abandon

my Toastmasters folly. But I could plainly see the

incremental improvements in myself, even though

it took me well over two years to finish my first ten

speeches. My superiors at work had also noticed

the change, and I found myself called upon to

participate more broadly in staff meetings, then

higher-level meetings, then actually leading

presentations. The quiet geek I had once been

was slowly being replaced by a competent,

confident communicator.

I still attended political meetings, but asthma

attacks were now a thing of the distant past. At

first I found myself occasionally participating,

then routinely speaking out, even winning people

over to my point of view. So it should have come

as no surprise that before long I came to the

attention of the Powers That Be, and they

offered a striking proposition: that I should seek

political office. I accepted their proposition.

Dealing with the media and participating in

debates is nothing more than an extended Table

Topics session, and organizing a campaign is a

great way to fulfill the High Performance

Leadership project. I could serve the community

and improve my Toastmaster skills at the same

time.

At first it was only local political office I sought,

but as I came closer to my DTM, the higher I

rose through the ranks: from town council to

state representative to congressman, until five

years after I joined Toastmasters, I was

nominated the Libertarian candidate for

Pennsylvania Governor for 2002. This once-

quiet geek ultimately participated in several

nationally-broadcast debates, gave speeches

before cheering crowds of thousands, and

garnered over 40,000 votes—a record for the

Libertarian Party! And it all started with some

stranger’s offhanded question.

And if this geek could triumph over the

pterodactyls, there’s no question: SO CAN YOU.

It’s been almost 17 years now since I became a

Toastmaster, and if you asked me back then why

After all, a good Toastmaster

never turns down an opportunity

to speak, and being a member

had well prepared me for the

candidate role.

Message from Newsletter Editor

Every time I leave my Toastmasters club meeting, I feel like I am fully charged with

positive energy. I can’t help wondering, why? After giving some thought, I summized

two reasons: self-improvement and helping others. I enjoy listening to speeches given

by my fellow toastmasters, very often regarding a subject I am not familiar with. I love

to hear evaluations and to observe how the Toastmaster of the day runs the meeting. I

can always learn something new. When it is my turn to evaluate and to perform

various meeting roles, I am helping the others to achieve their excellence. How about

the time between meetings? Can I still do these two things and keep in touch with my

Toastmaster family? Yes, now I can. I am thrilled to serve you as the district 38 PR

officer. My goal is to help you DEFINE YOUR EXCELLENCE when it comes to

improving communications between the district and your clubs and the wider public.
