The second letter of Peter is certainly an interesting letter. It was written with an aware-ness that his death was imminent. It was written with a hope that they would be mindful of the commandments given to them by the apostles of Jesus Christ. The final com-mand this aged apostle leaves his readers is a charge to "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” With this lesson, we begin a se-ries entitled “opening our hearts to knowledge.” 1. What it Means to Grow in the Knowledge of Jesus Christ. A. It means the development of the ______ graces. 1. Let’s give a brief definition of each grace in 2 Pet. 1:5-7. a. ________ is "conviction, strong assurance.” b. Virtue is "moral excellence, goodness.” c. Knowledge is "correct insight.” d. _____ _________ is “self-discipline.” e. Steadfastness (Perseverance) is "bearing up under trials.” f. __________ is "godly character out of devotion to God.” g. Brotherly affection (kindness) is "love toward brethren.” h. ________ is "active goodwill toward others.” 2. Growing in the knowledge of Jesus is more than simply increasing our "intellectual" knowledge of Jesus. (2 Pet. 1:8) B. These graces are to build upon each other. 1. Notice the word "_______" (or "supply") in 2 Pet. 1:5. 2. We are to add them will all diligence. 2. 5 Reasons to Grow in the Knowledge of Jesus Christ. A. Grace and ________ are multiplied.
