September 27, 2015 Spotlight on the IHM Garden:

As we nurture, so we grow.

All students in grades Kindergarten through 5 actively participate in our garden program. Under the

watchful eye of our Garden Coordinator and Grades 3-5 Assistant, Liz Hager, students learn to plant,

harvest and eat vegetables in the fall and spring seasons. They have grown kale and collard greens,

tomatoes and carrots, radishes, watermelons and cantaloupe. With the help of many parent volunteers

these vegetables are washed, prepared, and sent back to the school to be enjoyed by the students and

staff. The students really enjoy eating the foods they have grown. In keeping with our IHM tradition

of service, any excess produce we have is shared with a local food bank.

Below, Mrs. Hager is shown teaching about the garden in the outdoor classroom, and explaining the

planting process to a group of Kindergarten students. A student shows off a prize watermelon, and

the planter “bed” is overflowing with greens and flowers.

"Rebuild my House"

ACTIVITY FOR TEENS

“Rebuild my house”. This was the message of Christ to Francis as he prayed in the Chapel at San Damiano. This is also the message to each of us as disciples. All of youth can prepare for and reflect on a service involvement by considering the life and message of St. Francis of Assisi. Become familiar with the story of the life of St. Francis of Assisi, go to: http://www.americancatholic.org/Features/Francis/who_was.asp. Then answer the following questions:

How would you describe Francis?

What are some of the characteristics of Francis that we could imitate as disciples?

If Francis came to visit us in our parish, our neighborhood, our community, what would he notice?

What would he challenge us to do?

How do you see St. Francis as a model for yourself in doing service?

How does your involvement in service help you to be a servant of the poor and a steward of creation?

The example of St. Francis shows that humility is an essential part of our preaching the Gospel. Like all witnesses, your sharing should point to Christ and to the many ways we are privileged to continue his work of sharing Good News and of becoming Good News for others.

Christ has no body now on earth but yours; no hands but yours, no feet but

yours. Yours are the eyes through which He is to go about doing good;

yours are the hands with which He is to bless people now.

- St. Teresa of Ávila

Week of September 20

Offertory Basket: $17,343.00

Electronic Giving: $15,984.54

Total Offertory: $33,327.54

Today’s second collection is for the Society

of St. Vincent de Paul Georgia. Last year,

with more than 4,000 volunteers, and a ded-

icated central support staff, St. Vincent de

Paul delivered hope and help to more than

126,000 people in need. This second collec-

tion is special because each dollar raised

goes not only to helping people in our par-

ish area but also to helping people in need

across the state. Our gifts to this collection

go directly to provide emergency shelter,

food, clothing and educational resources to

those experiencing hardship and crisis with

the ultimate goal of achieving self-

sufficiency. We can, like Christ, serve the

poorest of the poor among us through our

wholehearted support of St. Vincent de Paul

Georgia. Please be generous.

“All This I Do For the Sake of the Gospel”

We have reached our goal in pledges for the 2015 Archbishop’s Annual

Appeal! But we really should be achieving TWICE our goal each year,

since AAA funds received over and above our goal return to us at IHM

without any Archdiocesan assessment! Our gifts help the charitable

works of the Archdiocese AND they help our parish. If you have not

already made a pledge to the 2015 AAA, please visit

http://appeal.archatl.com to make your pledge today!

Thank you to all who have already pledged! Remember to look for

your monthly pledge reminders, and please do your best to honor your

pledge before the end of the year. If you are having any

difficulty whatsoever with your pledge or pledge reminders, please

contact Richard Plachta at [email protected] or 404-636-1418,

ext. 245.

muchas otras relaciones.
