How Safe Are Your Children?

Poisonings are a serious problem in the United States. Poisonings are the 3rd leading cause of unintentional death for children under 5 years. Children can’t always protect themselves from poisons. It’s up to adults to provide a safe environment. Teach your children - Always ask first! (before they eat, drink or touch anything that they don’t know what it is).

Poison

• A substance that causes illness or harm if someone eats, drinks, touches or breathes it.

• Can be in several forms: solid, liquid or gas.

• May not be able to see or smell a poison.

A poison is anything that can make you sick or kill you if you eat, drink, breathe or touch it. There are many common household products and medicines that can be harmful if used in the wrong way or if used in the wrong amount. Poisons come in many shapes, forms and colors. They can be solids, liquids, sprays or gases. Let’s look at some statistics about adult and child poisonings.

81% of Serious Injuries

91% of Deaths

Adults suffer more serious injuries and deaths from poisonings than children. Poisoning facts show that 81% lead to serious injuries and 91% result in deaths.

Under Age 19

19% of serious injuries

9% of deaths

Most people think of children when they think of poisoning. And, indeed, children do have many more exposures than adults. Poisoning facts here show that 19% lead to serious injuries and 9% result in deaths. Can anyone tell me what the % of deaths was for adults? Go back to previous page. That is quite a difference.

Basic Poison Prevention

• Read and follow labels before taking or giving medicines.

• Read and follow labels on household products. Don’t mix products!

• Use protective equipment when required.• Store products in original containers.

Remember that most poisonings occur while the product is in use. For example, if there are young children in the house while you are using a product, take the child or product with you, if you need to answer the telephone or doorbell. 1-Read and follow labels before taking or giving medicines. Take only medicines that are prescribed for you. Keep purses and diaper bags out of reach of children. Vitamins are medicine. Vitamins with iron are especially dangerous. Keep them locked up. Put your glasses on and turn on the lights if needed. 2-Read and follow label instructions before using household products. Don’t mix household products –sometimes harmful gases can be released. 3-Whether you’re at home or work, use protective equipment when necessary – for example: goggles, gloves or breathing equipment. 4-Store chemicals and household products in their original containers. If you put products in food or beverage containers, someone might eat or drink them by mistake.

Dangerous Chemicals

• Drugs - prescription, non-prescription, animal, illegal and herbal

• Cleaning Products - toilet cleaner, drain opener, oven cleaner and rust remover

• Auto Fluids - washer fluid, antifreeze and washer solution

• Pesticides - weed killers, rat poisons, ant/ roach killers and garden chemicals

What are the most dangerous poisons for adults? Let’s look at some. Read slide.Add to cleaning products (that can cause burns). We will talk about some other poisons later.

Child Poison Prevention

• Use child-resistant packaging. Put tops on tightly.

• Lock products up so children can’t see orreach them.

• Do not let children watch adults taking medicine.

• Call medicines by their proper names.

If a child visits your home, you should poison proof it. Here are some ways to make your home safer. 1-Use child resistant packaging. Put tops on tightly and store inlocked cabinets. 2-Lock products up so children can’t see or reach them. Children can climb and reach anything, anywhere. You can buy safety locks at local stores. 3-Do not let children watch adults taking medicine. Young children often “imitate”adults. 4-Call medicines by their proper name; do not refer to them as candy. Keep products in their original containers. DO NOT use food containers such as cups or bottles to store household and chemical products. It’s easy to mistake a poison for something good to eat or drink, and never store a product in an unlabelled container.

Note: Child Resistant does not mean Child Proof.

Plants

Before we continue with the presentation, let’s talk about some other kinds of poisons that haven’t been mentioned. Plants both indoor and outdoor can cause severe injury and even death if swallowed by humans and animals. Plants are one of the leading causes of poisonings in children. Children are especially curious about mushrooms and berries. Children should be taught not to eat any part of a plant, shrub, tree, berry or mushroom. I have a sheet listing toxic and nontoxic plants for you to take home. Handout: Pretty Plants and Pretty Poisonous Plants brochure.

Bees

• If stung, gently remove stinger

• Clean wound with antiseptic

• People allergic to bee stings should seek medical attention at once

If stung, gently remove the stinger, if one is present, by scraping it from the wound. Clean the wound with an antiseptic, like alcohol, mix a paste of meat tenderizer or tobacco and water and spread it on the area of the sting. Ice packs can be used for swelling. If symptoms such as hives, rash, difficulty in breathing occur, go to an emergency room immediately. People who are allergic to bee stings should seek medical attention at once.

Spiders

Brown Recluse Black Widow

Only 2 spiders in Tennessee are a threat to man: the black widow spider and the brown recluse spider. The black widow has a red hourglass on its belly. The brown recluse has a violin-shaped marking on its head. These bites are seldom fatal, but can have serious side effects. Contact the poison center if bitten.

Snakes

Copperhead

Pygmy Rattlesnake

Cottonmouth

Timber Rattlesnake

There are several venomous snakes found in Tennessee. These are the timber and pygmy rattlesnakes, copperhead and cottonmouth. There is essentially no first aid for snakebites. Prevention is the key when dealing with snakes. Wear boots and heavy pants when hiking. Avoid walking in tall grass and do not reach into rocky crevices, under logs or rocks. Do not try to kill a snake, and if a snake appears to be dead, do not touch it near the head. A snake can strike up to 1 hour after death. Do not apply a tourniquet, heat or ice the bite. Loosen any constricted clothing and remove jewelry in the area of the bite. Keep the victim warm and resting and seek medical attention immediately.
