Today We Learn, Lead and Serve

Last month three of our LNC students demonstrated our school mottothrough their actions. Sarai Genece (10th), Leila Genece (8th) and CallieGenece (5th) helped serve over 275 homeless men a holiday dinner. Mrs.Genece reported, “It w as such a blessing for them to see the smiles onthese men’s faces and feel such gratitude for young people w illing to giveback in their community. The men could not stop thanking them. I am gratefulthat my daughters are part of a school that believes in learning, leading andserving and putting the needs of others above themselves."

Last month LNC 2nd grade students collected 367 pounds of canned foods to benefit Loaves andFishes! Your support of this leadership initiative made a difference to many families in our area thisholiday season. Thank you!

Strategic Area of Focus - Global Diversity and Inclusion

In September w e shared information about our Global Diversity and Inclusion (GDI) Initiative strategic area of focus. We have been w orking tow ards our goals in several w ays in order to expand staff and student aw areness, appreciation, and understanding of the diversity in our school, our community, and the w orld.

We are proud to share that to date, all of our teachers, administrators, and teaching assistants have participated ina half-day introductory w orkshop w here w e began to address our ow n beliefs and biases through discussions ofdiversity-related topics, including race and ethnicity, religion, disabilities, gender and gender identity, andsocioeconomic status. conversations in the classroom. The Teacher Development Committee is currently w orking on a follow -up w orkshopbased on teacher and administrative feedback. Our goal is to pilot the w orkshop this spring w ith a small group ofteachers and roll it out to the entire staff this summer and next fall.

Our Student Development Committee is w orking hard at each level. Based on a calendar of monthly themes, students participate in classroom or school-w ide activities that promote discussion and aw areness. For example, atthe elementary school, students learned about bullying prevention, Native American heritage and w ere immersed inHolidays Around the World to learn about and celebrate global customs and holiday traditions. At the middle school, students hear bi-w eekly announcements on the month’s theme as w ell as participate in Drop Everything and Talk(DET) classroom discussions once per month in response to resources about topics such as Indian heritage, NativeAmerican heritage, Asian heritage, Black History Month, and more. There’s also a monthly bulletin board thatpromotes each theme. Finally, at the high school, student-created bulletin boards and student-run Tw itter chats areoffered on topics such as Global Diversity, Hispanic heritage, Middle Eastern heritage and Women’s History.

As our mission states, “We believe that cultivating an inclusive learning environment that is free of hostility, intimidation or marginalization of any groups creates shared understanding, aw areness and the opportunity tocontribute positively to our local and global communities.” We are committed to this mission, but w e also realize thatsince this is a learning process for our teachers and students, there are likely to be some bumps in the road. As w egrow in our know ledge and understanding, w e w elcome constructive communication and feedback from allstakeholders as w e research, prioritize and adopt practices that foster and support a diverse school-w idecommunity.
