CCPS Hurricane Irma Overview • Expectation was to open 10 shelters • 100% of the schools CCPS could use as shelters were opened • 28 (54%) schools were opened in 29 hours • 20 (40%) schools within the storm surge area were unable to open • 3 (6%) schools not opened due to waste water package plants • 180% increase of opened shelters - prior to Hurricane Irma, CCPS had never
opened more than 10 schools as shelters or refuges • Over 17,000 people stayed in CCPS shelters or refuges • Majority were pet shelters – first for CCPS

drug addictions, service pets, and other unique needs • With the exception of one, the American Red Cross did not come to run the shelters
until after the storm has passed

Post Storm: Facility Damage • All CCPS schools and locations lost power during the storm • 11 days after the storm, the last school had power restored • 48 Schools and District Sites had water intrusion • 40 Schools reported roof damage
• Ceiling Tile or Drywall damage: 39 Schools and District Sites (11 significant) • 2 high school auditoriums were flooded • Everglades City School’s gym, music building, and art building flooded 3 feet deep
• The wood gym floor, air conditioning units, furniture, and interior walls were destroyed • All schools require mold assessments and/or remediation or sanitizing (pet shelter)

Post Storm: Facility Damage • 26 school fire alarm phone lines were damaged or destroyed • All schools reported debris from trees or building materials with more than half
having numerous downed tree limbs and trees • Nearly all schools reported damaged or destroyed exhaust fans or kitchen
