Friday’s match closes a three-match stretch versus teams among the United Soccer Coaches’ top 10. Florida lost 3-1 to then No. 5 Southern California on Aug. 29 in the nightcap of the Battle at the Banc event and lost 2-0 at then No. 4 UCLA on Sunday. Friday’s match at No. 6 Florida State is the third top- 10 opponents in an eight-day stretch for the Gators. This is the third time in program history (and second straight year) that Florida faces three consecutive top-10 opponents. The first was when Florida won the 1998 NCAA title after facing top-10 teams in NCAA quarterfinal, semifinal and final action. Florida was 0-2-1 in its 2018 stretch versus top-10 opponents – 0-0 2OT vs No. 2 UCLA, 3-0 loss vs No. 7 Southern Cal and 1-0 loss at No. 3 FSU. In the Battle at the Banc held last Thursday in Los Angeles, Florida lost 3-1 to then No. 5 Southern California. Trojans Tara McKeown and Arlie Jones put the Trojans up 2-0 by the 36 th minute of the match. The first Gator goal for senior Alex Stubblebine cut the Trojan’s lead late in the opening half. Her 22-yard strike to the far post scored at 41:57. USC pushed the lead back out to a pair of goals when McKeown scored her second in the 60 th minute. The Gators finished their trip to Los Angeles with a 2-0 loss at then No. 4 UCLA. After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Bruins got on the board early in second half when Marley Canales successfully converted a penalty kick. The Bruins struck again at 58:12 when Delanie Sheehan put in a deflection off Kali Trevithick’s 16-yard shot. The Gators had their opportunities Sunday, sending some dangerous crosses and balls into the box, but couldn’t find the scoring touch. The 2019 Florida team, made up of 30 players, includes 12 (10 freshman, two transfers) making their first appearance for the Gators. Florida returns seven starters from the 2018 team that advanced to the Southeastern Conference Tournament semifinal. Two returning Gators earned All-SEC honors in 2017 – Parker Roberts (2017/first team), Deanne Rose (2017/first). Senior centerback Julia Lester appeared on the 2018 SEC All-Tournament team. For the first time since 1996, Florida is not among the United Soccer Coaches preseason top 25. The Gators endured an injury-filled season in 2018, ending Florida’s 15 consecutive seasons of NCAA Tournament appearances. The Gators received votes in the 2019 preseason poll. The Gators currently hold the No. 24 position on the latest Soccer America poll. Florida faces nine teams on the 2019 United Soccer Coaches preseason poll – with seven of those meetings on the road. Nine meetings versus preseason top-25 teams in 2019 is second only to Duke’s 10. Add in Florida’s preseason exhibition versus No. 23 Wake Forest (3-2 loss) and the Gators have 10 meetings versus preseason top 25 teams. Four of Florida’s first five matches are versus top-25 teams – equaling Santa Clara for the nation’s highest number of preseason opponents in that span. Five SEC programs appear among the preseason top 25, with four additional programs receiving votes. Deanne Rose is among the 13 NCAA Division I players this fall who were on 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup rosters. Rose appeared in Canada’s 1-0 win over Cameroon to open group play. She is one of four with Gator ties to appear in 2019 World Cup play, joining UF alumnae Adriana Leon (Canada), Lauren Silver (Jamaica) and Havana Solaun (Jamaica). Another Gator played for her national team this summer. Sophomore Georgia Eaton-Collins was part of England’s European Football Associations (UEFA) Under-19 Finals in Scotland, playing the entirety of the three group stage matches. Florida makes its second consecutive trip to Tallahassee, as the cancellation of the 2016 match due to Hurricane Hermine disrupted the usual rotation (UF home in odd years). Last year the two teams looked to be headed for overtime until FSU’s Deyna Castellano took a hard 24-yard shot. Kristen McFarland’s left-footed touch on the deflection scored from six yards in the 88th minute to give FSU the 1-0 final score. It marked the ninth time of last 12 meetings that a single goal decided the match. The 2019 Seminoles were 20-4-3 in 2018 and won its second NCAA team title with a 1-0 decision over North Carolina. The Seminoles were also out in Los Angeles last week, suffering a pair of losses to top- five Pac-12 opponents – 2-1 versus then No. 4 UCLA and 3-2 overtime loss to then No. 5 Southern California. The 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List includes a quad of Seminoles – senior Deyna Castellanos, junior Malia Berkeley, sophomores Jaelin Howell and Yujie Zhao. Seminole junior Gabby Carle was on Canada’s World Cup rosters this past summer. S O C C E R

What’s Happening? Two teams looking to return to the win column after a pair of road losses last week versus top-five Pac-12 teams meet Friday in Tallahassee. Florida closes its season-opening five-match road stretch at No. 6 and defending NCAA champion Florida State.

Friday’s match closes a three-match stretch versus teams among the United Soccer Coaches’ top 10. About the 2019 Gators Forty percent of the 2019 Gators’ 30-player roster are newcomers. Among the 12 newcomers are 10 freshmen and two transfers. Seven starters return from Florida’s 2018 team that reached the Southeastern Conference Tournament semifinal. Two Gators earned 2017 All-SEC honors. Redshirt junior Parker Roberts and junior Deanne Rose were part of the 2017 All-SEC first team. Both players saw limited action in 2018, as a Jones fracture of foot sidelined Roberts after the sixth match of the season. Commitment to the Canadian Senior National team limited Rose to 10 appearances for UF in 2018. Florida also returns senior center back Julia Lester, a selection to the 2018 SEC All-Tournament

Seven of the 13 Gators earning points in 2018 return this season. Those not returning - Lais Araujo (6 goals, 2 assists – 14 points), Mayra Pelayo (1g, 5a – 7 pts), Briana Solis (3a – 3 pts), Sarah Troccoli (1g, 1a – 3pt), Melanie Monteagudo (1 g – 2pt) and Courtney Douglas (1g, 2 pt) – generated 31 points and 10 goals.

Madeline Gravante and Vanessa Kara transferred to Florida this season. As a freshman, Gravante was one of two to start every match for the 2018 Pittsburgh Panthers. She shared second among the Pitt players with two goals. Kara is a graduate transfer from Drexel. She is a three-time All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) selection and was the 2015 CAA Freshman of the Year. Through three seasons on the field at Drexel, Kara is No. 2 on career goals (22) chart and also No. 3 for career points (55) and assists (11). An injury sidelined Kara for the 2018 season.

Several Gators spent part of their summer with teams in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) or other leagues - Madison Alexander (Chicago Red Stars Reserves), Haillie Lower (MS Blue FC), Alyssa Howell (Florida SOL FC), Parker Roberts (Asheville City FC) and Tess Sapone (Washington Spirit Reserves).

2019 Gator Schedule The challenges are plenty for Florida soccer in 2019.

Nine regular-season opponents appear among the United Soccer Coaches preseason top 25. That number is second only to Duke’s schedule with 10 dates versus preseason top-25 teams.

11 of Florida’s 18 opponents advanced to 2018 NCAA Tournament action, including five among the final top 10 – Florida State (1st), UCLA (T5th), Tennessee (T5th), Southern California (T9th), Texas A&M (T9th).

Florida opens with five consecutive road matches – the longest season-opening road stretch in the program’s 25-year history (previous: four season-opening road matches in 2011). This road stretch takes the Gators from the east to west coasts, traveling more than 6,195 miles to meet the five opponents.

First Gator Goal Senior Alex Stubblebine’s 22-yard strike in the final minutes of the opening half in the Aug. 29 match versus then No. 5 Southern California marked her first Gator goal. Stubblebine joined Florida for the 2017 season after playing at Cincinnati as a freshman in 2016. Her first collegiate goal as a Bearcat freshman came on Oct. 30, 2016 versus Temple. Injury limited her participation in her first two seasons with the Gators. The goal versus USC was a special moment for the Gator who grew up in nearby Ocala. “It felt amazing! I can’t believe it,” Stubblebine said. “Growing up, I never thought I’d be playing here and to be able to score is really awesome.”

Florida’s 31st Teammate Just before 2019 preseason camp began, the Gators added its 31st player to the roster - eight-year-old Brooke Dunn of Leesburg, Fla. Brooke, a Gator fan since birth, made her Florida

allegiance official with her adoption through the Friends of Jaclyn organization. She was diagnosed in April of 2018 with neuroblastoma, a cancer of the central nervous system and nerve tissue. The first step of the treatment, chemotherapy, started soon after the diagnosis. The treatment disrupted Brooke’s plans to attend the Gators’ Orange & Blue game (a big disappointment for Brooke!). Friends of Jaclyn’s mission is “to improve the quality of life for children and families living with pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancer. Friends of Jaclyn matches children with high school and college athletic teams to provide support for the child and spread awareness of brain tumors throughout the community. Brooke is the 261st child to join a team through the Friends of Jaclyn program. Two days after her adoption by the Gator program, Brooke got some further good news. She rang the bell at Shands Pediatrics to signal NEC (no evidence of disease).

Florida 3 Florida Atlantic 2 OT Aug. 16, 2019 FAU Soccer Complex Boca Raton, Fla. BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Gators needed extended minutes to claim its season opener Friday at Florida Atlantic. Junior Deanne Rose hit the golden winner in the 96th minute to give the Gators a 3-2 overtime win over Florida Atlantic. Friday’s scoring: Florida Atlantic scored the only goal of the opening half in the 18th minute. The Owls used four passes to bring the ball from midway in their defensive half to find Pernille Velta. She received the ball at the top of the Gator defensive third and drove toward goal to score on a 15-yard right-footed shot. Florida’s Deanne Rose tied the match in the 55th minute off the pass from Kit Loferski. Rose moved past an Owl defender to score from 12 yards. The rain returned in the second half and the teams played in a heavy shower for the first 10 minutes. Then sophomore Cassidy Lindley’s 35-yard right footed strike put the Gators ahead in the 74th minute. A header in the 88th minute by FAU’s Mary O’Hara sent the match to overtime. It was the third overtime in the all-time eight match series, with all the OT matches coming in Boca Raton. Halfway through the first overtime, Rose put in the cross from Lindley to give the Gators the overtime win. Worth Noting

Of Rose’s six game-winning goals as a Gator, half are golden goals. She now one of five to share Florida’s career golden goals record.

Rose now has five double-goal matches as a Gator. Lindley also scored against FAU when the two teams met last season in Gainesville. All three of the meetings between these two teams in Boca Raton have gone to overtime, with

the Gators taking the win in each of those road contests. This is the 19th time in the Gator program’s 25-year history that its season-opening lineup

contained a freshman. Ava Kuyken of Oxford, England, made her Gator debut in the midfield. Florida is now 19-4-2 in in season openers, including a 6-3-1 record away from Gainesville. This was the fifth season opening match since 2006 that went to overtime, as UF is 3-0-2 in

OT openers. The Gators will have different captains for each match this season. The first captains of the

season were senior Julia Lester and redshirt junior Parker Roberts Records: Florida: 1-0-0, 0-0-0 SEC Florida Atlantic: 0-1-0, 0-0-0 C-USA What the Gators Said: It was an extend match with a weather delay and extra minutes. Was it worth the wait? “It was definitely worth the wait. Have to give credit to FAU. They came out and played hard. They got the equalizer late in the match after we had gone ahead. “But also give credit to us for showing the character to come back and win in overtime. Certainly not the prettiest match for us, but a good starting point for us to get the season started with a win.” – Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh What happened on the golden goal? “It was a throw in and it bounced around a few players. Sammie (Betters) got it and the outside back stepped to Sammie so I saw there was a little gap. Sammie played it through the gap and I made that run from the side and basically curled it into the box as hard as I could. If it was low and driven, it could bounce off anyone. Deanne (Rose) got there, caused chaos and it went in.”– sophomore Cassidy Lindley That was quite a goal. What did you see that led to that strike? “I saw Laney (Steed) had the ball so I tried to get as wide as I could. She played me the ball and I was running at the outside back and saw that she was forcing me wide so I cut in. I heard Vic (Campbell, UF Associate Coach) yell earlier to shoot so I just shot it and hoped for the best. “I didn’t realize where I was on the field. I looked down at the ball, up at the goal and then back at the ball. I don’t remember a goal I’ve had from longer distance.” – sophomore Cassidy Lindley Florida (1-0-0, SEC 0-0-0) at Florida Atlantic (0-1-0, 0-0-0 C-USA) Stadium: FAU Soccer Complex (882) Weather: 81 degrees, winds SE at 6 mph, 82% humidity

Florida 2 No. 18 South Florida 0 Aug. 25, 2019 Corbett Soccer Stadium Tampa, Fla. TAMPA, Fla. – Ranked opponent. Record crowd. The Gators soccer team calmly handled those extras tonight, registering a 2-0 win over No. 18 South Florida Sunday evening in front of a Bulls women’s soccer record crowd of 2,011. Sunday’s scoring: After a scoreless opening half, Deanne Rose received the ball at the top of the Bulls defensive third. Rose used her speed to create space as she moved left. The ball she sent across the mouth of the goal was tapped in by fellow junior Kit Loferski with her right foot at the far post at 51:19. Just over five minutes later, Rose received the ball just inside the Bulls half. Rose then made her way toward goal, moving past her defender and then placing the ball to the left of the Bulls goalkeeper at 56:42. Saves by Susi Espinoza The first clean sheet of the 2019 season needed a big Gator defensive effort and leading that effort was junior goalkeeper Susi Espinoza. Her eight saves tonight set her collegiate high. Worth Noting

Loferski’s goal is her fourth as a Gator and her first since Oct. 20, 2016 versus Alabama. She sat out 2018 season with a knee injury and injury also shortened her 2017 season.

Her score tonight raises Rose’s career goals total to 14. It was her third goal of the opening weekend, as she had a double goal effort in UF’s 3-2 overtime win Friday at Florida Atlantic – including the golden goal.

Espinoza upped her collegiate high for saves to eight tonight. Her previous high of five came in Florida’s 2017 win over then No. 1 Stanford – also on August 25.

Tonight begins a four-match stretch versus teams ranked among United Soccer Coaches preseason top 25. Florida and Santa Clara are the nation’s only teams to face four preseason top-25 teams in the opening five matches, but all of Florida’s meetings are on the road.

We played a lot of people today and got a lot of contributions from different players. We needed to go deep because playing on one day’s rest is really challenging. “We have a really difficult schedule and we knew that heading into this season. It is really critical that we got these two wins under our belt because the schedule does not get easier. This is a big stretch for us right now. I’m excited with tonight’s result versus a ranked team who will do very well this season.” – Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh Florida (2-0-0, SEC 0-0-0) at No. 18 South Florida (1-1-0, 0-0-0 AAC) Stadium: Corbett Soccer Stadium Weather: 92 degrees, winds NE at 4 mph, 56% humidity

Florida 1 No. 5 Southern California 3 Aug. 29, 2019 Banc of California Stadium Los Angeles, Calif. LOS ANGELES, Calif. – No. 5 Southern California gave Florida soccer its first loss of 2019, claiming a 3-1 win Thursday in the nightcap of the Battle at the Banc competition at the Banc of California Stadium. Thursday marked the first collegiate soccer competition at the Banc of California Stadium, which is the home of Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC. The stadium opened in April of 2018. Thursday’s scoring: Southern Cal scored twice in a six-minute opening half span to take a 2-0 halftime lead. The first came in the 30th minute when Tara McKeown put in Alea Hyatt’s free kick off the scrum in front of the goal. Arlie Jones put in the deflection off Savianna Gomez’s shot in the 36th minute to open up a 2-0 USC lead. The first Gator goal for senior Alex Stubblebine cut the Trojan’s lead late in the opening half. Kit Loferski’s pass found Stubblebine and her defender fell as Stubblebine moved toward goal above the center of the box. Stubblebine took advantage of the space to score on a 22-yard strike to the far post at 41:57. McKeown opened up the second half scoring at 59:15 with her second goal of the night. Penelope Hocking sent a diagonal ball through the box that McKeown caught up to before hitting a right-footed shot at the top corner of the six-yard box. Worth Noting

Stubblebine scored her first Gator goal tonight and her first goal since Oct. 30, 2016 versus Temple as a Cincinnati freshman. Stubblebine transferred to Florida for the 2017 season, but injury limited her participation in her first two seasons with the Gators.

Stubblebine’s strike at 41:57 was Florida’s first goal of 2019 in the opening half of play. Coming into tonight, four Gator goals came in the second half and one in overtime.

The Gators are halfway through their challenging four-match road stretch versus top-20 teams. Tonight, the Gators started a three match stretch versus top-5 teams in an eight-day span – No. 5 USC, No. 4 UCLA and No. 1 Florida State.

Two starting Gators are not with the team in Los Angeles this week. Sophomore defender Georgia Eaton-Collins is with England’s Under-21 National Team for Nordic Cup play. Freshman midfielder Ava Kuyken is also back in England for a U19 national team camp.

Throw-in are especially something that we work on so that was a little disappointing. But thought in the second half we had some really good opportunities. Our press was effective against them. We were unlucky not to get one or two more. “I think this is a game that we can really, really grow from. I’m glad we are playing this kind of schedule because it will really help us in the long run.” – Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh What happened on your goal – which is also the first of your Gator career? “I was just outside of the 18 and the ball got served in. Kit (Loferski) had her back to goal and she set it perfectly. I just took a touch, got by the defender and took a shot – and it went in! It felt amazing! I can’t believe it. Growing up, I never thought I’d be playing here and to be able to score is really awesome.” – senior midfielder Alex Stubblebine

Florida 0 No. 4 UCLA 2 Sept. 1, 2019 Wallis Annenberg Stadium Los Angeles, Calif. LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Florida women’s soccer team lost 2-0 at No. 4 UCLA Sunday afternoon at the Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Sunday’s scoring: After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Bruins got on the board early in second half when Marley Canales successfully placed her penalty kick to the left of Florida goalkeeper Susi Espinoza at 47:40. The Bruins were awarded the penalty kick after Espinoza received a yellow card. The Bruins struck again at 58:12 when Delanie Sheehan put in a deflection off Kali Trevithick’s 16-yard shot. The Gators had their opportunities Sunday, sending some dangerous crosses and balls into the box, but couldn’t find the scoring touch. Florida Head Coach Becky Burleigh spoke about those missed opportunities after the match. “Credit UCLA – they have a very, very talented team. But honestly, I don’t think that 2-0 score was indicative of today’s game. We got behind them, served balls across the box - we need to be a bit more clinical in the final third. We were able to play through their midfield and I think that is a very, very talented midfield,” she said. “There will be some real positives that come out of this. I just think that we are close and these games are really going to help us.” Worth Noting

The Bruins’ goal in the 48th minute ended a 158-minute stretch of scoreless play between the two teams. Last season, UF and UCLA played to a scoreless tie at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium.

The Gators have one more event on their challenging four-match road stretch versus top-five teams. Florida lost 3-1 at No. 5 Southern California on Thursday and 2-0 at No. 4 UCLA. This Friday, the Gators play at current No. 1 and defending national champion Florida State.

Two starting Gators were not with the team in Los Angeles this week. Sophomore defender Georgia Eaton-Collins is with England’s Under-21 National Team for Nordic Cup play. Freshman midfielder Ava Kuyken is also back in England for a U19 national team camp. Another starter – Deanne Rose – was sidelined for this match with an injury incurred in Thursday’s 3-1 loss at No. 5 Southern California.
