TODAY’S READINGS

e has gone to stay at the house of a sinner. (Luke 19:7)

When Jesus told the parable of the Pharisee and the tax

collector, he made it clear that it is better to be humble

than to consider yourself better than everyone else (Luke 18:9-

14). When he forgave the sinful woman at a dinner party, he

couldn’t help but teach his host, a Pharisee, how much better it

is to be merciful rather than self-righteous (7:36-50). In today’s

Gospel reading, Jesus goes so far as to invite himself into the

home of a public sinner, a corrupt tax collector named

Zacchaeus.

To the crowd surrounding him that day, Zacchaeus was a

traitor who served the Roman Empire and made himself rich at

the expense of his fellow Jews. But while they were focusing on

who Zacchaeus was, Jesus focused on who he could be. That

vision for the man’s future moved Jesus to speak kindly to him

and lead him to salvation.

There are times when we can be like Zacchaeus as well. We

can take advantage of other people and look out only for

ourselves. Other times, we can be like the onlookers. We become

self-righteous and judge people harshly. We are all capable of

holding a double standard—one for ourselves and one for

everybody else.

Despite our shortcomings and our double standards, Jesus

continues to reach out to us just as he reached out to Zacchaeus.

It’s true that Jesus loves us as we are. But it’s also true that he

loves us so much that he wants to see us become everything we

are meant to be.

In your prayer today, ask the Lord to show you one simple

way that you can become more like the person you were meant

to be: perhaps more caring or more generous, perhaps more

loving toward your family or more prayerful. As he did with

Zacchaeus, Jesus is always ready to help you. He is always ready

to pour his grace on you whenever you turn to him.

“Lord, fill me with your love. Help me to look at the people

around me the way you look at me.” Taken from The Word Among Us, November 2013, Vol. 32, Number 10: Used with

mis bienes, y si he defraudado a alguien, le

restituiré cuatro veces más” (Lucas 19, 8).

Estas son expresiones de un hombre

transformado por Dios, para quien amaneció

la luz y llegó la salvación.

Los recaudadores de impuestos eran

despreciados por los judíos devotos. Eran

palabras: “Baja, Zaqueo, no puedes conocerme

deja ver bien y solamente conocerás algo

aquellos a quienes había estafado (Lucas 19,

8) y aprendió a amar y servir a sus

conciudadanos de una manera diferente.

“Amado Jesucristo, mi Señor, yo también

quiero conocerte personalmente. Te invito a

paz, armonía y salud, no sólo a mí sino a mi

familia también. Gracias, Señor.” Escogida con el permiso de La Palabra Entre Nosotros, Vol.

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF PRESIDENT JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY

The Cathedral of Saint Matthew the Apostle will observe

the 50th anniversary of the death of President John F.

Kennedy throughout the month of November. The

significance of this anniversary for the Cathedral lies not

7:30pm – The Cathedral’s Schola Cantorum will present

the annual Concert of Remembrance featuring the

the public. Free-will offerings will be gratefully accepted.

Choral Mass of Remembrance – Friday, November 22,

5:30pm – The Cathedral will mark the anniversary of the

Public Life at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy

School of Government.

¡GRACIAS!

MARRIAGE

Couples who are interested in celebrating the

Sacrament of Marriage at the Cathedral are

encouraged to visit the parish website to

review our guidelines for weddings. The next

step is to call the Rectory at 202-347-3215

and ask for the priest of your choice or the

priest on duty, who can speak to you about

marriage preparation and the possibility of

scheduling your wedding ceremony at the

Cathedral. Couples are expected to contact us

at least nine (9) months in advance of the

date on which they hope to celebrate their

wedding.

BAPTISM

Parents who wish to have their child baptized

at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal

Coordinator at the Rectory at 202-347-3215

x555 or [email protected].

Parents are encouraged to make contact with

us at least six (6) months in advance of a

desired baptismal date, at which time they

may ask for the priest of their choice to per-

form the Baptism. This early contact enables

parents to be scheduled for the necessary

sacramental formation session before the

child’s baptism and allows time for godparents

to obtain letters from their parish pastor.

If you are a registered parishioner at St.

Matthew’s and need a letter of good standing

in order to be a godparent for a baptism to be

celebrated at another parish, please call the

Cathedral rectory at 202-347-3215 to ask

about obtaining a letter.

MORNING PRAYER

strength this day. (Psalm 63) Morning Prayer,

one of the offices of the Liturgy of the Hours, is

prayed on Wednesdays and Thursdays at

7:30am in St. Anthony’s Chapel. We gather to

give praise for a new day and all that is yet to

be, relying on the Holy Spirit who unites the

Church at prayer. Please join us, whether you

are already pray Morning Prayer or would like

to learn. Bring your breviary or share with one

of us. Call 202-587-5143 with questions.

Adopt-A-Family Program

Thanksgiving Drive 2013

The Cathedral Social Justice and Community Services committee is collecting

grocery store gift cards to distribute to families who are in need this Thanksgiving

season. We invite all parishioners to donate in two ways:

1) Purchase a $25.00 Safeway or Giant gift card and turn in to the volunteers who

will be at the main entrance of the Cathedral during every mass the weekends of

November 9 & 10 and November 16 & 17.

2) You may also make a financial contribution of any amount and drop it in the

same baskets those two weekends. Checks are welcome! Write checks payable

to St. Matthew’s Cathedral (add “Adopt-A-Family Thanksgiving” on the note line)

and place it in the attached envelope. Financial contributions can also be sent

directly to the rectory.

We would like to receive donations no later than November 19 so the families can

receive their gift cards before Thanksgiving. Any donations that we receive

above what is needed at this time will be used to provide emergency assistance

to families in need throughout the year.

Please be as generous as possible, as there is great need among many families in

our parish community. Thank you very much for your generosity and support!

For more information, please contact Pedro Carroll at [email protected] or

call the rectory at 202-347-3215.

”Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

(Mt. 25:40)

Looking for a convenient way to support our parish offertory?

Faith Direct is the innovative solution that allows you to support our parish using electronic funds transfer from either a credit card or bank account. It is a hassle-free, simple solution for today’s busy families. Sign up using the enrollment form on the other side or go online to www.faithdirect.net and use our parish code DC284 to enroll today!

How does Faith Direct work?

Faith Direct is a secure system that works directly with your bank or credit card–much the same as other direct payments you may have set up for utility bills or mortgage payments.

When do transactions take place? Transactions take place once per month on the 4th or the next business day. The total amount of your gifts for that current month (both offertory & second/special collections) will be debited in one monthly total. The Cathedral will receive the funds 4 business days later.

Can I stop, increase, or decrease my payment at any time? Yes, by calling Faith Direct at 1-866-507-8757 (toll free) by emailing [email protected], or by logging in to your account through www.faithdirect.net.

How does the Cathedral benefit from my participation with Faith Direct?

The Cathedral will see a substantial increase in net revenue, a decrease in administrative costs, and a clearer picture of cash flow for their needs.

If you have any questions about the Faith Direct program, please call 1-866-507-8757 {toll free} or send an email to [email protected],

or contact Pam Erwin at the Rectory at 202-347-3215 x537 or [email protected].
