TODAY’S READINGS  

et the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God. (Luke 9:60) If you ever listen to popular love songs, you’ll find a lot of 

exaggeration. You hear lines like “I’d give the moon if it were mine to give.” “I’m gonna love you till the stars fall from the sky.” “My love is deeper than the deepest ocean.” But behind all of this fanciful imagery, there is something very real. Even if they are speaking only out of infatuation or love at first sight, these lovers are saying that they would do anything for their beloved. 

That’s what Jesus is asking of his disciples here. He is looking for something much deeper than mere infatuation. He wants us to be as deeply in love with him as he is with us. The young man who asks to go home and bury his father is not wrong. But Jesus is trying to show him that anyone who experiences God’s radical, passionate love will become equally radical in response—to the point where everything else is secondary.  

So when we read these words, we shouldn’t think of Jesus as a harsh, demanding taskmaster who is out to take away all we hold dear. Rather, he is a lover, wooing us with something more desirable than anything on this earth—himself. As God told Israel once, “I will espouse you to me forever … in right and in justice; in love and in mercy; I will espouse you in fidelity” (Hosea 2:21‐22).  Today is a good day to ponder how deeply God loves you. He may not send you flowers or buy you diamond rings, but he delights in giving you even better and longer‐lasting gifts. He has gone so far as to give you his very life—all so that he could be with you for all eternity. So in your prayer today, picture Jesus sitting next to you. See the love in his eyes, and know that he will never leave you. He has such wonderful plans for your life. How can you not want to follow him? 

“Lord, I am captivated by your grace and mercy. Your love is beyond imagining! I surrender all to you, because your love is better than life!”

LAS LECTURAS DE HOY  

an Lucas, en el Evangelio de hoy, nos dice que Jesús “tomó la firme determinación de emprender el viaje a 

Jerusalén” y no dejó que nada lo desviara de su meta. Los apóstoles Santiago y Juan, que iban con Cristo, reaccionaron de una forma muy humana ante la hostilidad de los samaritanos, por cuyo territorio iban cruzando, porque quisieron castigarlos con la ira del cielo. Pero Jesús los reprendió, porque el mensaje para quienes desean seguirlo es claro: Los caminos de Dios no son los nuestros.  

Probablemente Santiago y Juan creyeron tener la solución correcta para lidiar con la oposición de los samaritanos; pero, en el fondo, no pensaban correctamente, porque su experiencia, hábitos y prejuicios del pasado los hacían juzgar las cosas a su modo, no al modo de Dios. Jesús decidió dirigirse a Jerusalén para enfrentar su muerte y su Resurrección, iniciando así un nuevo camino que desafiaba a los discípulos a cambiar de actitud.  

San Pablo dijo: “Cristo nos ha liberado para que seamos libres. Conserven, pues, la libertad y no se sometan de nuevo al yugo de la esclavitud” (Gálatas 5,1). En Jesús, somos liberados de la esclavitud del pecado, de vivir según las normas del mundo, de confiar solo en nuestros razonamientos y deseos, y somos liberados para no hacer lo que no debemos hacer. En Cristo somos libres para seguir los criterios de Dios.  

En efecto, debemos aceptar la invitación al discipulado que Jesús nos ofrece y aprender a actuar como Jesús—no sólo en forma intelectual, como aprendiendo una materia en el colegio, sino con el corazón, como un hijo aprende escuchando e imitando a sus padres—en una relación profunda, que abarque todos los aspectos de nuestra vida. Cuando Jesús nos llama, nos pide que nos comprometamos dócilmente y sin reservas; es un llamado a vivir en Cristo.  “Padre amado, veo que me amas tanto que

Please pray for  the 25 men ordained by Cardinal Wuerl last Saturday as Permanent Deacons for the Archdiocese of Washington, including St. Matthew's parishioner James Garcia (above, at the laying on of hands). On receiving the Book of Gospels, 

each new deacon was instructed by the Cardinal: "Believe what you read. Teach what you believe. Practice what you teach."  SUMMER DINNER FOR THE HOMELESS – Thank you to everyone who participated in the Summer Dinner for our homeless friends sponsored by the Social Justice & Community Services Committee. Your donations of delicious food, money and time in hosting the event allowed us to serve 65 grateful guests. Fr. Evelio used the opportunity to say farewell to his homeless friends. They felt very welcomed, and some claimed it was the best meal they ever had! We hope you and others will join us when we host another biannual meal in Fall.  PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION – The Peter’s Pence Collection for our Holy Father will be taken up in the Archdiocese this weekend, June 29­30. In a recent address, Pope Francis spoke of our responsibility before the world: "There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy and those who suffer, and to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace." The Peter's Pence Collection unites us in solidarity to the Holy See and its works of charity to those in need. Please be generous.

 SUMMER MASSES – From Monday, July 1 through Friday, August 30, there will be no 7am weekday Mass. The 7am weekday Mass will resume on Tuesday, September 3.  LOOKING AHEAD – Thursday, July 4 is Independence Day, a federal holiday. Masses will be celebrated at 8am and 12:10pm only. Following the Cathedral’s federal holiday schedule, there will be no confessions. The Rectory will be closed.  FIRST FRIDAY AND FIRST SATURDAY – First Friday Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on July 5 following the 12:10pm Mass until 5pm in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, to the left of the sanctuary. All are welcome to come and adore Our Lord. 

On Saturday, July 6 all are welcome to First Saturday Devotions after the 12:10pm Mass, followed by Hospitality in the West Conference Room.

FAITH IN ACTION  

SAVE THE DATE: ANNUAL HEALTH & WELLNESS FAIR ­ This year’s Health & Wellness Fair will take place on Sunday, September 15 from 9:30am till 3:30pm. The fair will address women’s health, cancer prevention, diabetes, nutrition, mental health, dental health, provide consultations and more. To help with the planning of the health fair or to volunteer on the day of the event, please email Gregg Glotnis, Social Justice Co‐chair, at gglotnis@verizon.net. Our next planning meeting will be Wednesda, July 10 at 6:45pm in the East Conference Room  UPDATE ON THIS YEAR’S PARTICIPANTS ‐ We are pleased to announce that the Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind (CLB) will send their I‐Van to this year's Health and Wellness Fair. CLB has recruited Catholic Charities, American Diabetes Association, Lion's Club and My Eye Doctor (which offers low cost referrals) to support the I‐Van. Exams will be performed by a low vision optometrist who will conduct:    ‐Comprehensive eye exams with refractions    ‐Low vision exams and device demonstrations    ‐Diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma testing    ‐Vision screenings 

FAITH FORMATION  

INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? – “The RCIA, which stands for Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is a process through which non‐baptized men and women enter the Catholic Church. It includes several stages marked by study, prayer and rites at Mass. Participants in the RCIA are known as catechumens. They undergo a process of conversion as they study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church, and receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Holy Eucharist. The RCIA process follows the ancient practice of the Church and was restored by the Second Vatican Council as the normal way adults prepare for baptism. In 1974 the Rite for Christian Initiation for Adults was formally approved for use in the United States” (www.usccb.org). The RCIA also is for adults baptized in other Christian traditions who wish to receive the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist in the Catholic Church and for adults who were baptized in the Catholic Church and wish to complete their initiation. Please contact Heather Kinney at hkinney@stmatthewscathedral.org to inquire about the RCIA process.

MARRIAGE Couples who are interested in celebrating the Sacrament of Marriage at the Cathedral are encouraged to visit the parish website to review our guidelines for weddings. The next step is to call the Rectory at 202‐347‐3215 and ask for the priest of your choice or the priest on duty, who can speak to you about marriage preparation and the possibility of scheduling your wedding ceremony at the Cathedral. Couples are expected to contact us at least nine (9) months in advance of the date on which they hope to celebrate their wedding.  

BAPTISM  Parents who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral should contact the Baptismal Coordinator at the Rectory at 202‐347‐3215 x555 or baptism@stmatthewscathedral.org. Parents are encouraged to make contact with us at least six (6) months in advance of a desired baptismal date, at which time they may ask for the priest of their choice to perform the Baptism. This early contact enables parents to be scheduled for the necessary sacramental formation session before the child’s baptism and allows time for sponsors to obtain letters from their parish pastor. 

WELCOMING ALL For wheelchair access to the Cathedral, enter the driveway to the parking garage next to the Cathedral. Ring the buzzer at the Conference Center door located at the bottom of the driveway to enter. Take the elevator to the Cathedral level.  A sign language interpreter is present at the Sunday 11:30am Mass and at designated special liturgies throughout the year. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. Those desiring to take advantage of the induction loop should sit in pews B1, B3, A1 or A3 and switch their hearing aids to "T." 

YEAR OF FAITH PILGRIMAGE

CHILDREN’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONST. MATTHEW’S CATHEDRAL

2013-2014

The Religious Education program at St. Matthew’s Cathedral exists to provide sacramental preparation for FirstReconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation as well as ongoing faith formation for children who have receivedthese sacraments. It strives to communicate the Good News of Jesus Christ in the context of the beliefs andpractices of the Roman Catholic Church. The program presents the four fundamental themes of the Catechism ofthe Catholic Church – Creed, Sacraments, Morality, and Prayer – in such a way that the children of our parish beginto understand how to live the Gospel.When and where are classes held?Classes are held weekly on Sunday mornings from 9:45 to 11am in the St. Matthew’s Education Center located at 1726N Street NW. It is expected that parents will attend a special class for them at the same time and that families willworship at either the 8:30am Mass before class or the 11:30am Mass following class. Classes generally are not held onholiday weekends.

When do classes begin?There will be a mandatory parent-teacher meeting Sunday, September 8, 2013 from 9:45 to 11am in the WestConference Room. Classes will begin Sunday, September 15, 2013 and conclude in late May.

How do I register my child(ren)?Complete the two-sided registration form (available in the Cathedral rectory and on the parish website), and attachyour child’s Baptism certificate (if new to the Religious Education program) and cash or check made payable to St.Matthew’s Cathedral for $50.00 per family. Financial assistance and/or a payment plan are available for those inneed. How does Faith Direct work?

Faith Direct is a secure system that works directly with your bank or credit card–much the same as other direct payments you may have set up for utility bills or mortgage payments.

When do transactions take place? Transactions take place once per month on the 4th or the next business day. The total amount of your gifts for that current month (both offertory & second/special collections) will be debited in one monthly total. The Cathedral will receive the funds 4 business days later.

Can I stop, increase, or decrease my payment at any time? Yes, by calling Faith Direct at 1-866-507-8757 (toll free) by emailing info@faithdirect.net, or by logging in to your account through www.faithdirect.net.

How does the Cathedral benefit from my participation with Faith Direct?

The Cathedral will see a substantial increase in net revenue, a decrease in administrative costs, and a clearer picture of cash flow for their needs.
