    Flying trapezea swinging thrill

    toes a little over the

edge of the platform. When Will or Dangives the commandReady, bend yourknees. And when theysay, Hop, you must

jump, bringing yourfeet together as youhop off the platform.

Pretend like yourejumping into a smallhole in front of you,so you have to bring

your knees and feettogether, says Will.

Will then demon-strates a basictrickwhich I, sadly, havent accomplished(yet!)called the kneelift: As youre swingingin the air, you mustbring up your knees to

your chest and hangthem over the bar.Once youve hookedthe bar under your

knees, you take yourhands off the bar andlet yourself hang up-side down by yourknees. After that, you

will do a curl-up soyou can grab the baragain with your hands, unhook your kneesfrom the bar, and hang

    right-side up again.

When yourebringing your kneesup, do it like yourealmost rolling on yourback, so itll be easi-er, said Dan.

I was almost ableto do it, but I couldntpull my knees upenough to hook themon the bar. Dan andWill were great teach-ers though, cheeringme on and pointingout small things I wasable to do right: Mytoes were pointed, giving me good form;and, as Dan put it, Ihad mastered the dis-mount from the net(admittedly my fa-

vorite partyou grabon to rope handles at-tached to the net androll over, so that youland on the mat be-

low on your feet). We want to build a

program [for the stu-dents]; we dont wantit to be just a one-timething, says Will. Thegreat thing about thetrapeze is there are somany tricks you canlearn. You just have to

    start with the basic,

then build up fromthere. You can evenput a new twist to dif-ferent tricks.

Will and Dan areaccepting students as

young as 6 and evenas old as 65. But thereare some fliers who areeven older, said Will.

Will has been fly-ing in the UnitedStates since he was 8

years old. He startedteaching how to flyon the trapeze whenhe was around 16. He

would join circuscamps where hetrained and improvedhis skill. I met Dan

    when we both worked

at the same summercamp, said Will. Hehas also trained withother trapeze artistsin the US.

Dan, on the otherhand, has been flyingthe trapeze for 10

years. He has beenactive in circus artsfor over a decade. Heis a Swedish and

    American citizen

whos now based inManila, and is excitedto share the art of fly-ing trapeze to Pinoys.

Will wanted to putup a trapeze rig in thecountry when he firstmoved here from the

US eight years ago. Buthe felt that it wasntthe right time. Nowthat more people arelooking for new formsof exercise, Will saidthat Pinoys will soonbe flying in no time.

The trapeze has al-ways been big in theStates. Britney Spearsand Hugh Jackman useit as a fitness regimento complement theirusual workout, Willsaid. I dont knowanyone who reallyhates ityoure eithernonchalant about it, or

    you absolutely love it.

I FELT a rush of panic while standingon top of the 25-ft-high platform, brac-ing myself for my first-ever trapezeswing. Deep inside I was screamingwhile staring on the ground and thenet that would catch me below. Butsomehow I managed to keep my com-posure as I finally took hold of the bar, bent my knees and hopped off.

My squeal cameduring mid-swing, asflying trapeze instruc-tor Dan Rozensweigasked: Want to try tolift your knees?

No! I hollered, panicking but at thesame time enjoyingthe thrill of theswing. Okay, you can

just s wing for now,Dan said.

As my swing lostits momentum, I had

to do yet anotherdeath-defying act: Letgo of the bar and al-low myself to fall tothe net. Thankfully it

was a slow drop be-cause of the safety ca-bles attached to thebelt I was wearing.

I wasnt trying outfor the circus, justsampling FlyingTrapeze Philippines,

the newest fitness at-traction in town andthe first trapeze schoolin the country. It wasbrought here by Danand Will Hsu, both ex-perienced fliers andtrapeze enthusiasts.

Weve been seeingthe opening of anti-

gravity yoga studios, and we know of Pole-cats Manila, which al-so does a lot of in-door trapeze; so Ithought that now is agreat time to intro-duce the trapeze toManila, Will said.

The school recentlyopened in BonifacioGlobal City. Thetrapeze rig is an im-pressive sight, stand-ing on an open field at

the corner of 34thStreet and 9th Avenue.

Classes will be heldin groups of 10. Willstarts the lesson byteaching the properpositions when prepar-ing for a swing. As

you hold on to a poleon your left, you mustlean forward, yourback straight. Youmust then stretch out

one hand and grab onto the swinging bar. When youre ready,

you can let go of thepole youre holding onto the left, so thatboth hands are nowgripping the bar. Stand

Child Wonder NioMuhlachs son shines, too

No child star could comeclose to Nios achievements

when he was at the peakof his career as a kid. Ni-

    os heir apparent,Alonzo could be

    Show Townsnext Little Big

    Thing.Heres

    my one-on-one withNio:

    How isAlonzo sim-

    ilar and dif-ferent from

    you?Alonzo and I

are alike in so manyways. Some kids are

precocious in front oftheir parents, but shy infront of other people.Well, its the other wayaround for us. The more

people watching us, thebetter.Recently, we went on a

Mediterranean cruise.Alonzo went up on stage

and danced la MichaelJackson, while the rest

of the ships 2,300 passengerscheered him on.

Unlike me, he still has a littledifficulty speaking in Filipino. We didnt think hed join showbiz, so we started talking to himin Filipino fairly recently.

Would you consider your-self a stage father?

Its hard not to be one. Iflooking out for your sons wel-fare means youre a stage fa-ther, so be it.

When he reaches the awk-ward stage, what would youadvise him?

At the peak of my career as achild star, my dad told me thatone day, all the fame and for-tune would disappear. So whenthat time comes, you better beprepared. What goes up mustcome down. I will make surethat he is ready, the way mydad prepared me.

    How will you manage his

earnings?I will open a trust fund forhim, just like my dad did. Hecan only avail of it when hegraduates from college or whenhe turns 21.

    Whats your advice to par-

ents who want their kids tojoin show biz (to escapepoverty)?

I have encountered manychild actors who are literally be-ing pinched by their parents tomake them cry. Yes, stardomcan be the fastest way to make

money, but make sure that yourkid enjoys performing. Dontforce them if theyre not inter-ested.

Rock and RoccoWe, at the Cinema Evalua-

    tion Board, gaveHustisyaa

grade of B.Lead starNora Aunor out-

does herself as a strong-willedwoman who fights for her soulin the belly of the city.

Rosanna Roces brilliantportrayal of a ruthless crimeboss proves that shes still verymuch in the game.

Ate Guy and Osang are likeyin and yang onscreen. Theymake quite a formidable tan-dem in the survival of theshrewdest.

I was also impressed withRocco Nacino, who portrays acrooked lawyer. The pretty boyhas evolved into a pretty good

    actor.Heres mytete--tetewithRocco:

What did you learn fromworking with Ate Guy?

I learned not to be scared ofdifficult scenesTo acknowl-edge that youre nervous when

youre working with a veteran, but to get rid of the jitters whenits time to shoot the scene. De-spite her superstar status, sheremains humble. Thats some-

thing all celebs should follow. In the film, your charactermade an analogy about a frogand a mosquito. In order tosurvive, the frog has to blend

with its surroundings so it caneat the mosquito. Are youmore of a frog or a mosquito?

Id rather be a mosquito andbe more aggressive in life.

Is Lovi Poe wife material?I havent thought about it

yet. But she is definitely girl-

friend material. Shes very car-ing and thoughtful. I cant askfor more. Its unavoidable that

we sometimes talk about mar-riage, but we are taking thingsslowly because we both havemany other priorities. But whenits time, it will happen.
