Understanding TOEFL iBT Scores 5

There are no pass or fail TOEFL marks. To receive an official score on the TOEFL iBT test,you must answer at least one question from both the Reading and Listening sections. Youmust write at least one essay and complete at least one Speaking task. For the TOEFL iBTtest, which is administered online, you will receive 4 scaled section scores and a totalscore:

Total score: 0-120In addition to your scores, your test taker report will include performance feedback. Thisprovides a description of the kinds of tasks that test takers within the reported scorerange can do. MyBest® Score feature combines test-takers’ best scores for each sectionfrom all of their valid TOEFL iBT scores in the last two years. MyBest® scores give testtakers a way to show their best overall test performance.

In order to help you achieve your score and forget about the bad score, ETS has made agreat change. ETS TOEFL has altered it’s scorecard to include MyBestScore in the finalreport card.How does it work?ETS will select the best scores from the previous 2 years each TOEFL section and combine them to create the best possible score.

For example, let’s say you took theTOEFL 4 times in the last 2 years.

Score Validity

Scores are used to measure a test taker’sEnglish proficiency at the time that a test isadministered.

Due to rapid development of Englishproficiency by younger learners, ETSrecommends that scores are not usedbeyond 1 year. Scores can be consideredvalid beyond 1 year if the student hasprovided evidence of having maintainedthe same level of English languagelearning.

Test Format

The TOEFL iBT® test has 4 sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.During the test, you'll perform tasks that combine these 4 Englishcommunication skills, such as: read, listen and then speak in response to a question listen and then speak in response to a question read, listen and then write in response to a questionThe total test takes about 3 hours to complete, but you should plan for 3½hours, allowing 30 minutes for check in.

How is your score marked?

You will receive 4 scaled section scores and a total score. Each section has a score range of 0–30. These are added together for a total score of 0–120.Each skill has 4 or 5 proficiency levels, so where your score falls within that range tells youyour proficiency for that skill.
