TIPS for TOEIC SPEAKING TESTTMD 2012

PART 1. Read a Text Aloud

Preparation Time: 45sec / Response Time: 45 sec. ( The reason why they offer same preparation time with response time: Give enough time to practice. Do NOT make any mistake on PART 1. Ss can lose huge points from PART 1.) Checking preparation time and response time are very important! (safe to leave a few second when you answer the Qs)Speak Clearly, loudly with confidence. Do not try to read it fast.

When you hear beeping sound, wait for 1~2 seconds and then start to read. ( If you start it right after the beep, your first word may not be recorded.

Things that you need to prepare for 45 seconds. 1) Scan the given paragraph and find Proper noun(Name, Location),Comma, Numbers(Units) and Symbols(Internet address, #, *) 2) Find Phrasal Verbs, and sentence with conjunctions (ex) A,B or(and) C.) * Every paragraph in Part 1 has 4~5 important factors that we can get(or lose) scores.

PART 2. Describe a picturePreparation Time: 30sec. / Response Time: 45 sec.Divide the picture into 3~4 parts. Come up with keywords. ( middle, foreground, background, left side, right side ) 1) Intro : describe a place. (ex) This is a photo taken in ~ )2) Body: 1) Less than 2 people: Ss need to describe all of them in details(outfits, facial expressions, actions or movements, etc) 2) Imagine that someone is drawing pictures following your descriptions. It helps to find out important objects quickly in the pictures. 3) Middle -> foreground -> background / both sides of the picture -> foreground -> background.3) conclusion: Inference / Own opinion. (ex: It seems that~ )Practice!! Usage of Prepositions! ( in, at, between, on, against .. )

PART 3. Respond to Questions

NO Preparation Time / Response Time: 15,15,30sec.Ss dont need to read all direction sentences. Just focus on the LAST WORD! ( Brainstorm quickly while you are hearing direction)

Part 3 has 3 combo questions.The first 2 questions start with WH- or HOW questions(how often, how long, how many..etc). (Answering it with one correct/full sentence is enough. DO NOT try to create a different form of question. Answer it based on the sentences from the Qs.

2) Ss will be given 30 sec for the last question : Ss can state their experiences. It is required to answer with at least 4~5 sentences.PART 4. Respond to Questions Using Information ProvidedPreparation Time: 30 sec. / Response Time: 15,15,30 sec. Ss will be given 30 seconds to read the information before the Qs begin.Brainstorm: What kind of data is it? What do you see on the schedule?

Check List : Place, Time, Number, What, When, Who etc. Think about the right verbs and prepositions !

PART 5. Propose a SolutionListening Time: 60 sec / Preparation Time: 30 sec / Response Time: 60 sec. NO Note-Taking allowed. Ss HAVE TO REMEMBER! Things to remember while Ss are listening. 1) From Who ? (ex) name, company) 2) Whats the problem? Ex) late delivery, dress order, lost wallet etc. 3) Time and Place ? (when did it happen? Where? ) 4) Request ? ( What does the speaker want?, what is the message about?)

Answer Tips) Introduce yourself Summarize(Clarify) the problem Explain the reasons of the problem Give solutions (suggestions) Conclusion

Practice it by using lots of telephone expressions. (polite expressions) Ex) Thank you for calling~ If you have any further questions about it, feel free to call us to 555-5555. PART 6. Express an OpinionPreparation Time: 15 sec. / Response Time: 60 sec.Types of Q 1) Agree / Disagree 2) Personal Preference

Answer Tips: 1) Introduction : Your choice / preference2) Body 1 : reason why you support this, then explain or give an example (Use adverb, First, Second) Body 2 : 2nd reason / Explain3) Conclusion : summary or emphasizing your opinion. ( Paraphrasing the intro sentence will be ok)
