A Word from the Pastor

stewardship

““““Great Thanksgiving”Great Thanksgiving”Great Thanksgiving”Great Thanksgiving” How do you define gratitude? Think of those moments when someone walks into the room, or texts you, or an email from them pops into your inbox…and this uncontrollable smile or grin begins to take over your expression. Greatness is that feeling that comes when you receive something good…something you know will make you flower the way God created you to bloom. I love communion. This meal we share weekly is rooted in the word “eucharisto”…which means “thanksgiving.” Communion is The Great Thanksgiving, because in this meal we realize again Jesus has entered the room and this uncontrollable smile overtakes us. We realize again we are receiving something very good…something to make us flower in the way God created us. As you give and receive thanks in many ways this November…be on the look out for those uncontrollable smiles and grins that come across your face. They are blessings to be counted, for gratitude and God are both near. And, as we head into this season of Thanksgiving, remember the poor and hungry in our community. Be generous with what you have, for when you are…know that it will bring a smile to others…that they might live and flower in the way God created them.

This month’s stewardship topic is financial stewardship. We tend to avoid the topic and bring it up infrequently. We don’t want people to think our congregation is all about money – and it certainly is not part of our pur-pose statement and the message preached every Sunday. That being said, the world we all live in is very much money orien-tated. The church has to pay its bills with money, and our staff, whether

ordained or lay, has to pay their bills with money. Most importantly, the ministry we do in the congregation, com-munity and world costs money. For that reason we prepare, vote on and operate according to an annual budget. The amount of money you then give us determines the means and facilities we will have and much of what we are able to do as a congregation. Our congregation is certainly defined by our spiritual characteristics and activities, but that is mostly perceived by those of us on the inside. To those on the outside, those in the community around us, we are primarily defined by what we contribute to our community and those in need - and that often comes down to what funds we can provide. The Bible certainly highlights care for those less well off than ourselves and in our recent Listening Survey you responded that outreach and people were primary concerns. As a congregation we have been able to provide modest measures of help to those beyond our walls with that limited by whatever additional non-operating funds you provide us. As the Listening Team looked out into Marble Falls, it found a great deal of need in the commu-nity around us – certainly more than was previously understood. In light of our faith and our own concerns, won’t you help us better address that need? This year the Stewardship Team is asking you to prayerfully consider a 10% increase in your giving. So, if you give $50 a week can you stretch and trust God by giving $55/week in 2016? We hope this stewardship challenge will not only increase the ministry of St. Peter’s, but will also increase your own faith as well!

Bible Studies

“The Greatest Story”“The Greatest Story”“The Greatest Story”“The Greatest Story”

The Greatest Story Ever Told – this is the way people often refer to the Biblical Story. Although these

days most Biblical scholars and church gurus would argue that it has become The Greatest Story NEVER

Told because people no longer know it well. There is often a feeling of inadequacy when it comes to the Bible or a disconnect between the stories we learned from our Sunday School days to our now more mature faith. This is why the Worship & Music Team, Ministry Staff, and Congregation Council have

decided to change our Sunday morning lectionary cycle away from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), which provides an Old Testament text, Psalm, Epistle (Letter), and Gospel. This Fall we will begin with the Narrative Lectionary in both worship and Sunday School.

Prophets & Kings of the Story: Prophets & Kings of the Story: Prophets & Kings of the Story: Prophets & Kings of the Story: November 8th – November 21st

During this session we’ll hear the stories of some of the prophets who called Israel into account when she was unfaithful but also brought words of comfort, hope, and promise. We will hear

these words – harsh and hopeful – still speaking to us in times of our own exile.

Adults and children will begin in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30am each Sunday

for a 15 minute cross+generational cross+generational cross+generational cross+generational opening. Then we will break into our various classes.

Adult Sunday School Class will meet in Room 215 led by Pastor Casey and class members. Kingdom Seekers Class will meet in Room 212 led by Greg Murrell.

SPLAT Sunday School will meet in the SPLAT House for breakfast and sharing, prayer, Bible study, and growing in faith together, led by Pastor Vanicek, Aaron Pyle, Jana Holley, and Allyson Black. Youtherans will meet in the Fellowship Hall.

MID-WEEK/Monthly Bible Studies:

If it is more convenient for you, please do your crocheting or knitting at home. The shawls will then be blessed and distributed to the sick and elderly in our church and community. Church News & Business

THANKOFFERING

Through various program areas, Women of the ELCA’s community of women provide services in their churches, communities, and even the world. We engage in ministry; we take action through advocacy; we promote healing and whole-ness; and we support one another in our callings. We offer anti-racism training; address domestic violence, commercial sex-ual exploitation, and human trafficking; and support families with special needs. We assist participants in their desire to discern God’s call in their lives and to discover their spiritual gifts through workshops, retreats, resources, scholarships, and global education. We offer grants to not-for-profit organizations, both domestic and international, that support healing and wholeness for women of all ages through the affirmation and advancement of women’s emotional, physical, and spiritual health. Your gifts on Thankoffering Sunday, November 8th, will help us do all this! JUSTICE

• Justice is faith in action; it addressed inequities in political, economic, and social systems. • Justice is equity and impartiality, mercy and compassion. • Justice includes serving God in ways that bring healing and wholeness to the church, the society, and the world. DISCIPLESHIP

• Discipleship is a lifelong journey of living out and spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. • Disciples are followers of Jesus who are intent on carrying out the Great Commission (Matt 28:19-20) and the Great

Command (Acts 1:8) STEWARDSHIP

• Stewardship is careful and responsible management of the money, property, and resources that God has entrusted us. • Stewardship is proving for the ministries that God has entrusted to our care.

SECOND ANNUAL EPIPHANY FESTIVAL AND SMORGASBORD Epiphany is the celebration of the message of the Birth of Christ being spread from tiny Bethlehem throughout the whole world. It seems like a long way off, after all, we still have Thanksgiving and Christmas to celebrate. And that is exactly the reason for this brief article - to give you time to think about how you may want to contribute in the celebration.

We will have an Epiphany Festival again at St. Peter's on January 3, 2016. The holiday is rich in tradition and symbolism. Many of these traditions will be celebrated during our worship service and smorgasbord. There are some differences in the way things are going to be done. First, there will only be one service. It will begin at 9:30am. Worship will be followed by a brunch smorgasbord of foods representative of the ethnic heritage of St. Peter's congregants, as well as foods representing our families' favorites. To help with the celebration, we are asking members who have Wise Men Figurines to bring them to the church on January 2, at 10:00am, so that they may be used as centerpieces. Further, we are asking that anybody that has artifacts of their country of origin or the country of origin of their ancestors to bring them to the church for display. Some may have clothing unique to their country of origin. Some may be able to sing songs in the language of their ethnic heritage. Whatever you may have that represents the fact that the word of Jesus Holy birth spread to all the world including the place of your origin would contribute to the celebration. Watch for the sign up sheet that will be in the narthex the last three Sundays of December. If you have questions of suggestions please contact the church office or Arlis Schmidt at 210-326-7447 or [email protected].

Thanks to all of the women who donated their time and talent to make our first annual Mini Bazaar a success. Approximately 34 women donated their time and talent to bake, sew and use other varied talents cashiering, helping set up and clean up. Thanks also for all those who made purchases and donations toward the cause. Approximately $2400.00 was raised and will be divided equally between the Pastor's Discretionary Fund, Open Door Recovery, The Helping Center and Mission Marble Falls. With heartfelt gratitude!

TheListeningTeam In October 2014, the Congregation Council formed a special team to begin the process of dreaming and vision-ing the future of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with particular attention to building & ministry needs. This group then be-gan a three-step process of listening: UP to God, OUT to the community, and IN to the congregation. Throughout the summer we focused on listening OUT to the community. During August and September we spent time listening IN to you through our congregational survey. We are thankful to those who completed a survey. We have now compiled those responses and are completing our time of sharing what we have heard with you in various small groups. The team will complete our listening in early November and plan to make a report to Council shortly thereafter. Should you have any questions or need further information please contact a member of the Listening Team: Charlie Selman, Carol Moquist, Steve Reitz, Allyson Black, David Martin, Amanda Fancher, Samantha Shirey, Pastor Casey, Pastor Vanicek, and Dave Leighton. Please also remember to hold this group and the work we are doing in your prayers.

through the next few weeks? To explore possible answers to those questions, a “Coping with Grief Support

Kimberly Sandman, and Dick Schroer.

Pastor Casey opened the meeting with prayer and handed out a discussion sheet asking the questions, “What comes to

mind when you think of “Together, Boldly living and sharing God’s grace with all?” and “What do the words ‘With All’

mean and/or look like to you?” Several meanings for “With All” were expressed as “Everyone” and No One Is Excluded.”

Then the question was asked “What if a homeless person were to visit our church and how would we treat him?” Discus-

sion followed and Old Testament chapters Genesis 17 and Isaiah 52, along with New Testament chapters Matthew 38,

Acts 17, and Revelation 22 were referenced. An interesting question was asked “Should we state in our sign “All Are Wel-

come?” and “why not put a sign at the Helping Center during Lenten Services to tell people needing help that there is food

available at our Lenten Meals.”

The minutes of the July 21, 2015, meeting were presented and a motion for approval was given by Faith Trapp and second-

ed by Judy Haverlah. Motion passed.

The Treasurer’s Report was given by Dave Leighton. He reported that contributions for July were almost the same as June,

but the expenses were much higher. As a result of the yearly receipts are less than the expenses. Dave stated that August

receipts would probably make up the deficit due to August having 5 Sundays. Building in Faith contributions continue to

be enough to make our monthly mortgage payments. All in all the church finances appear to be doing well. A motion to

approve the Treasurer’s Report was made by Jerry Bostick and seconded by Faith Trapp. Motion passed.

Pastor Casey gave her report highlighting upcoming special services and citing that help would be needed for the potluck

dinner and Rally Day on August 23. The September 13th church service will begin the new lectionary. God’s Work, Our

Hands will be held on October 18. Pastor Casey also reported that the Listening Team has completed the Listening Out

portion of their survey and is getting Listening In surveys to church members between August 23 and September 6. A new

members class is scheduled for September 27.

Pastor Vanicek gave his report stating that the Child Protection Committee had finished their work and that those who

work in the church office would meet for an hour on August at the Phoenix Center to discuss the manual and for training.

Lindsey Humphrey from the Phoenix Center will also help in the training. Pastor Vanicek also stated that the character

description for a High School Minister has been completed. The committee is now working on the financial aspects of

how to pay for it.

The Property Committee has asked for volunteers (individuals or families) to take the responsibility for up-keep of a flower

bed, but has had no success. It was suggested at the Council Meeting that maybe we should have a congregation work day

in the fall with a follow-up in the spring. The date is to be determined, but will happen in October or November. The

portico area roof and stucco needs to be repaired due to water damage. Steve Reitz will be giving us a cost. The janitorial

contract has some minor changes to be made, but should be in force by September 1.

Faith Trapp reported that the Helping Center is in need of cash. Only one church in Horseshoe Bay gives monthly. Could

we give more?

Moments of gratitude followed and the meeting was closed by Saying the Lord’s Prayer.

Faithfully submitted, Richard L. Schroer
