Dear Friends,

Episcopal Homes focused throughout 2019 on uncovering 125-years of history through stories that shaped our mission, values, culture and way of life. Recurring themes from our past – true in good and difficult times, like during the Spanish Flu, wars and depressions–provide a source of comfort and wisdom today, including:

• Loving, authentic, collaborative relationships among and between staff, elders, families and community enrich the spirit and provide an unwavering sense of purpose.

Our mission: enriching life & building community with older adults

• Passionate, industrious, committed leaders, residents and friends help sustain and redefine Episcopal Homes when called upon by the times.

We presume 2020–a time when the world wrestles with the Coronavirus pandemic and social unrest surrounding racial injustice–will be a defining marker for change and source of stories told by those who come after us.

On March 13, face-to-face visits between families and loved ones were stopped to keep Coronavirus out of our facilities to protect residents and staff. Communities were divided into five zones to prevent virus spread, creating a stark contrast from longstanding efforts focused on bringing people together. Elders and staff donned masks. Once vibrant congregate activity programs were scaled back to allow for six-foot distancing and congregate dining was eliminated.

On May 28, while still in lockdown due to Coronavirus, the excruciating killing of

George Floyd while in police custody brought additional challenges to our community. The resulting social unrest, violence, burning and looting of over 170 businesses located eight blocks east of our main campus and surrounding our communities in St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood prompted the need for elders from 50 apartments to be evacuated elsewhere for three nights.

So much has changed so quickly. Stories in this issue show how our community has come together through many small acts of love and support that reflect who we are and who we have been for 126 years. These acts of love are a source of hope as we move forward adapting quickly in response to the changes taking place around us.

Some stories show technology innovation. While we prefer face-to-face interactions, technology has helped break down walls to sustain meaningful relationships and purpose in difficult times. Other stories illustrate ingenuity to meet basic and emergency needs through tireless acts of service.

While much progress has occurred in our 126 years, we have committed to actively and intentionally promoting further learning and progress, upholding the cause of our founders–to extend respect and dignity including those cast aside by society and to respond with love in times of need.

Today, Episcopal Homes serves 1,400 older adults annually who reside in ten communities situated at key light rail stops along University Avenue in St. Paul and at Becketwood Cooperative in Minneapolis. These communities collectivity offer a full continuum of housing, care and service, including independent apartment, assisted living, and nursing home residences, as well as rehabilitative, memory and home care. Fifty six percent of all residents are low income. Sixty nine percent of apartments offer subsidized affordable housing and nearly half of elders served are people of color. While offering exceptional, five-star housing and care, the true differentiator of Episcopal Homes is its unique focus on building communities that enrich the lives of older adults. We do this by promoting mind, body, spirit wellbeing, active civic engagement and vitality among our diverse community of elders.

Frontline staff remain critical connectorAs COVID-19 has and continues to restrict the active social atmosphere around Episcopal Homes, technology has become increasingly important for connectivity. The flexibility and relationships of staff and residents have helped ease the transition from face-to-face contact to more virtual interactions. “By using technology creatively and adapting quickly to emerging needs, we have managed to sustain essential connectedness for our elders,” says Mary Routhieaux, Chief Advancement Officer and Foundation Executive Director.

Episcopal Homes Foundation, aided by your contributions to our COVID-19 Emergency Fund, quickly purchased the technologies in March to support resident wellbeing at a time of great uncertainty and when family members’ in person visits with our beloved residents were curtailed.

These purchases brought some peace of mind for families and residents. Donna Foster, a resident of The Garden’s nursing home, has actively embraced newly available iPads, headsets and staff support to host video chats with one or all three of her daughters. According to daughter Judy, Donna jokes on

Zoom chats about their experience together, “It’s just like Star Trek!”

For Judy and her two sisters, Gayle and Lisa, being connected virtually has really helped during this time. “It’s comforting to be able to see her and talk to her. I think for mom simply being able to see our faces lights up her smile.”

Before COVID-19, residents enjoyed extensive face-to-face programming and family engagement. We often heard residents say they never imagined being so busy. When we stopped large group programming, congregate dining, and access to visitors to keep the virus out of our facilities, many of us did another thing we never imagined–we embraced technology to remain informed, connected and healthy.

Staff quickly learned new ways of working to sustain our mission too. The daily schedules of enrichment staff in our nursing homes are now filled supporting video chats between elders and their loved ones. Frontline staff like Karren McRae are critical to this important work.

“Everyone here eventually becomes part of an extended family. The elders I work with every day are my family. Both of my parents have passed away and so I especially understand the importance of trying to make sure each person has the opportunity to connect with their loved ones,” says Karren McRae, Activities Director, the Gardens.

“This isn’t just a job for me. COVID-19 has been the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to deal with during my 12 years of doing this work and we must continue to do everything we can to keep these wonderful people healthy,” adds Karren.

Resident Life portal and new TV channelsIn addition to video connections, our Wellbeing Program staff now offer adaptions to

programming, like daily yoga on both our new Resident Life online portal and four new in-house television channels. Similarly, neighbors come together weekly to participate in a journal club on Zoom, and many more access sermons and meditation offerings through our television channels, Facebook Live and Resident Life online.

“We prefer face-to-face interactions, but Coronavirus has sparked about three years of technological growth in just three months as a reflection of how seriously we take elders’ need for relationship and connection,” adds Routhieaux. “We’re excited to launch several new digital offerings that reflect the resilience, courage, and creativity of elders and staff as we all explore opportunities for connection while preventing exposure to Coronavirus.”

Erna Carlstrom, Gardens' resident, was able to connect with her out-of-town family on her 105th birthday thanks to technology.

Contributions needed to sustain and improveThis work didn’t occur without challenges. Those who participate in web or video connections experience internet and video connectivity hiccups due to the intense increase in traffic on the Episcopal Homes' network. Recognizing the network was now being depended on to stay connected, sensors throughout our facilities were quickly added to identify areas for improvement. Support to strengthen the technology infrastructure is needed. Contributions to the COVID-19 Emergency Fund are helping Episcopal Homes respond to the unanticipated need for new devices and infrastructure to keep pace with a new digital way of life.

Digital offerings In addition to programming, new digital offerings provide community access to virus prevention education; Marvin’s daily updates; a campus calendar of events; campus dining options; and grocery delivery support. We hope to continue to expand capability and offerings within our new Resident Life web platform.

As the COVID-19 outbreak spread rampantly across our nation, Episcopal Homes worked quickly to ensure safety of staff and elders. In addition to accelerating innovation with technology and its communications with staff, elders and families, many friends came together to support our work and serve the needs of our community.

105th birthday party prompts gratitude

Erna Carlstrom recently celebrated her 105th birthday at Episcopal Homes. Amidst visitor restrictions, staff worked creatively so Erna could celebrate with her family. Thanks to technology, Erna talked, shared, and listened as family members came by to sing her birthday song, and to share an "I love you.”

Heather and Greta Iverson, friends of Erna’s family, decided to donate 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies out of gratitude for staff members and their work.

Handsoap donationJodi Halvorson, daughter of Nancy Begin, Garden’s resident, donated over 1,050 bottles of sanitizing hand soap for residents and staff. Her father owns Creative Labs, a health and beauty manufacturing company in Eagan, that changed its focus to soaps and sanitizers to accommodate needs during the pandemic.

Riots displace more than fifty residents at Kings Crossing

Community

Episcopal Homes received a generous donation of 1,050 bottles of handsoap during the COVID-19 outbreak from Creative Labs, a family business associated with Garden's resident, Nancy Begin.

Above a boxing club called Circle of Discipline in Minneapolis delivers 150-200 bags full of food and sundries to staff and elders in need.

Above, Karren McRae helps Erna Carlstrom celebrate her 105th birthday with her family.

Our staff recently needed to quickly relocate residents of our 50 Kings Crossing apartments in St. Paul’s Frogtown neighborhood when the protests honoring the tragic killing of George Floyd turned destructive. These remarkable and resilient elders are now back home, healthy, safe, and grateful. The necessary move and three days of accommodation elsewhere led to an unplanned $10,000 expense. A week after social unrest ravaged our community, groups donated and delivered free groceries to our campus.

Neighborhood Development Center artists displayed messages of peace and unity at retail locations below Episcopal Homes Kings Crossing apartments.

Joyful messages done in chalk sprouted all around campus–sharing words of encouragement and beautiful art in support of residents and staff.

Volunteers from near and far worked tirelessly to supply frontline workers with homemade face masks and shields at a time when safety equipment was in short supply. More than 3,000 source control masks were made for staff and elders on our campus. “We don’t personally know each person who helped us, but every single mask that was made felt like gold to us,” says Stacy Dunn, Volunteer Program Director. “The impact on our community can be measured by the love that went into each one. More than half of our masks came from a lot of people doing a few at a time. We are incredibly grateful for each and every one.”

More than 80 new volunteers have committed their time since March. Sewing masks, making prayer shawls, serving as phone companions and sending good wishes of joy and love are a few of the ways people are supporting our staff, elders and community at this time.

Volunteer Feature: Innovation Center at St. Thomas Academy

Episcopal Homes was one of many recipients to receive face shields from the Innovation Center at St. Thomas Academy. “It didn’t take long for us to realize the need within the healthcare setting,” says Mark Westlake of St. Thomas Academy. The Catholic preparatory high school began making face shields in March to respond to community needs.

“Nobody should go to work feeling unsafe. We decided we needed to do our best to fill this need and put our 3-D printers to work making face shields for healthcare workers. After we started our operation, inquiries and letters from all across the nation started coming asking how others could help our efforts.” Westlake and his team started crowdsourcing operations working with other student groups and a variety of organizations, both large and small.

They have been able to fulfill more than 20,000 requests for shields that have been distributed nationally. Requests to help healthcare workers with personal protective equipment shortages are still coming in. The project at the innovation center spearheaded by Westlake aligns with the St. Thomas Academy values and commitment to serving others. “We teach our students empathy. We want them to understand they can make a difference. We teach them servant leadership,” says Westlake. “I feel strongly that I should model this behavior for my students.”

Managing this project has been chaotic at times, but he and his team take it in stride. “I feel like God has prepared me for this COVID-19 project and its chaos all my life,” he adds.

"It is not the magnitude of our actions, but the amount

of love that is put into them that matters."

Clarence Scott, Housekeeping, started as a volunteer with Episcopal Homes. Now, he is the main Housekeeper for the dedicated COVID-19 unit and wears a shield each day.

Food accommodations during COVID-19When our campus went on lockdown, food access had to quickly be adapted to ensure elders had access to the most basic of needs. Episcopal Homes’ culinary team was tasked with changing facility, cooking and staffing plans to find a way to deliver food to residents organized into five zones without movement between zones to prevent risk of contracting or spreading the virus.

When our activity bus services were stopped for independent living communities to prevent exposure to the virus, access to groceries for independent elders was suddenly a challenge. Kristin Aitchison, Creative Ventures Director, quickly spearheaded a team from across the organization to coordinate grocery orders, shopping and delivery for those who were unable to leave campus and did not have nearby family able to drop groceries.

A resident of Cornelia house decided they wanted to buy a plant for each of their fellow neighbors and place them at their doors with a special note.

Requesting to remain anonymous, she has brought about a spirit of gratitude throughout Cornelia House.

“This plant is a gift from one of your neighbors. Hopefully it can be a little reminder that even when the whole world feels shut down, we are still alive and growing. Enjoy. Take Care. Keep Growing.”

Staffcommunity remains resilient

adapt to keep basic needs met;

Since that time, community partners like Cub Foods and Mobility for All have stepped in to assist in filling and delivering these orders. Hurby McDaniel, Manager of the Midway Cub Store, has shared how much he looks forward to meeting Episcopal Homes' residents face-to-face. He feels like he knows them from filling their orders personally with his team since March and has remained committed to making sure they each have what they need.

“We are so appreciative of their efforts to support our elders with such commitment,” says Aitchison. “Even with the challenges resulting from the recent social unrest in our community, Hurby and his team remained committed to ensuring needs were met regardless of the Midway store being closed for a short time.”

Molly and Patty–mother/daughter staff members of our culinary team–paid for resident Pete Anderson's favorite meal and had it delivered to his home in Cornelia House.
