As the markets panic over the coronavirus outbreak, it is important to understand how to keep your money safe and come out on top at the other end.

We live in unprecedented times. It is difficult to stay calm and level-headed at

the moment amidst the uncertainty that the COVID-19 outbreak has created globally. No one can predict what will happen in three months or six months or a year from now. Most of us are taking things in stride day-by-day trying our best to cope and hoping that governments, the medical fraternity and our fellow people make the right decisions so we can all emerge from this in a relatively good place.

Certainly, the prolonged impact of the outbreak brings our financial situation to the fore. Questions will arise about our income security, what effect it may have on the wealth we have built, how will it impact our future retirement plans, and so on and so forth.

We understand that it can be difficult to make informed financial decisions that are not driven by fear or emotion amidst the volatility and dramatic sell-offs in the markets which can challenge your commitments to long-term investment plans.

While there is no fool-proof method to navigate the markets in times like this, we believe there are still actions you can take that can make a difference in putting yourself in a safer, if not better, financial position at the other end as we all try to get through this challenging period.

5 TIPS TO HANDLE MARKET VOLATILITYWe hope these tips will provide you with a better idea of how to manage your financial situation and navigate the investment landscape through the market turmoil we are experiencing.

Markets can fluctuate depending on geopolitical events, economic data release, special events or expectations on valuations and corporate earnings.1 In spite of the severity of the COVID-19 outbreak and its knock-on effects, it is important to remember that volatility is to be expected from time-to-time in financial markets.1

History does not necessarily repeat itself, but we can learn from prior lessons.1 Short-term volatility can happen, but they do not necessarily derail the long-term growth in stock markets.1 Historically, significant recoveries occur following major

setbacks including economic downturns and geopolitical events.1

While news flow such as what we have experienced with the COVID-19 outbreak – as well as other instances like Brexit, trade wars and Middle East tensions – can affect short-term

market sentiment and lead to loss in asset valuations, share prices should ultimately be driven by fundamentals over the long run.1 Therefore, you should avoid panic selling as an investor during volatile periods to avoid missing out on any potential market recovery.1

• You can see that the longer the investment time frame, the less likely of a negative return.1 • The 1-year bar graph on the left shows that the performance of the index over any 1-year period between 1999 and 2019 ranged between -51% and 79%. However, for any 10-year period, investment performance of the index ranged between -23% and 225%.1

• Therefore, the longer you stay invested, the more likely you are to enjoy positive returns.1

When markets get rocky, it is tempting to exit the market to avoid further losses.1 However, if you focus on short-term market volatility only, you may end up buying high and selling low.1 Again, history has shown that financial markets go up in the long run despite short-term fluctuations.1

Though markets may not always follow the same recovery path, periods of correction are often critical times to be exposed to the markets.1 Staying invested for longer periods tend to offer higher return potential.1

This chart shows the performance of global equities represented by the MSCI AC World Total Return Index over different time frames between 1999 and 2019.

Diversification simply means the old adage: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.1 Different asset classes often perform differently under various market conditions due to their unique characteristics and correlation (relationship to behave in a similar or opposite way at the same time) to one another.1

By combining assets with different characteristics, the risks and performance of different investments are combined, thus lowering overall portfolio risk.1 That means, a lower return in one type of asset may be compensated by a gain in another.1

Market downturns may create opportunities

• Price to book ratio (P/B Ratio) is a ratio used to compare a stock‘s market value to its book value – the company's assets minus liabilities.1 It is calculated by dividing the price of the stock by its book value per share.1 A lower P/B ratio could mean that the stock is undervalued.1

• The chart shows that high levels of selling during economic crises drives valuations down, which can provide buying opportunities.1 • Sometimes, company valuations are at their lowest during these times because everyone seems to have a negative view.1 • Opportunities can arise when market sentiment is the lowest – when all the news is negative.1 For example, between November 2008 to March 2009, valuations reached the lowest point over this period at 1.28x.1 This was followed by a lengthy period of positive returns.1

3 STAY DIVERSIFIEDDiversification can help achieve a smoother ride.

When markets decline, don’t be passive or follow the herd mentality.1 Valuations tend to be driven down to attractive levels when market sentiment is negative, which often provides investment opportunities.1 In bull markets, people tend to invest as they chase returns for fear of missing out.1 In bear markets, people tend to sell. When investors overreact to market conditions, they may miss some of the best performing days.1

While no one can predict market movements, periods when everyone is overwhelmingly negative can often turn out to be some of the best times to invest.1

HSBC Global Asset Management viewpoint amidst volatilityThings have been changing daily and markets have been fluid. As HSBC Global Asset Management followed the developments, here were their key views as things continue to unfold…

• Global risk assets have sold off sharply and volatility has surged amid the global outbreak of COVID-19.2 The current environment suggests that a global recession is now the most probable scenario.2 The only question is for how long and how deep.2

• In response, the US Federal Reserve has cut federal fund rates by 100bp to 0.25% and committed to at least US$700 billion of asset purchases in the months ahead.3 The European Central Bank and Bank of England have also made similar moves, delivering comprehensive easing packages in the face of the health crisis we face.3

• HSBC Global Asset Management believes it makes sense to adopt a more neutral tactical view in the one to three-month period on developed market equities in such a highly uncertain and volatile environment.2 However, they maintain a strategically pro-risk stance in the 6+ months outlook in the context of hugely improved relative valuations for risky assets.2

• Be prudent and practice greater selectivity in risk assets that you hold as an investor.4 HSBC Global Asset Management sees greater potential for policy stimulus in the US, China and many Emerging Markets (EM) and believe it makes sense to allocate a higher weight to EM and US equities relative to the eurozone and Japan.4 With the eurozone economy facing significant challenges from the outbreak and policy makers facing some constraints to prompt action, HSBC Global Asset Management is cautious on exposure to the eurozone.5

Investing regularly means continuous investment regardless of what is happening in the markets.1 When you make fixed regular investments, you buy more units when prices are low and less when prices are high.1 This will smooth out your investment journey and average out the price at which units are bought.1 It reduces

the risk of investing a lump sum at the wrong time, especially amidst market volatility.1

The longer time frame you hold your investments the better the potential outcome, because it allows more time for your investments to grow – the compounding effect.1

Dollar-cost averaging helps smooth the effects of market movements

5 INVEST REGULARLY DESPITE VOLATILITYStay invested for the long haul.

The chart shows what happens to US$1,000 invested monthly. More shares are purchased when prices are lower and fewer shares are purchased when prices are higher.1 This approach can help you stick to an investment plan, while reducing the impact of short-term market movements on your portfolio versus a lump sum investment of the same amount.1

HSBC is committed to help you reach your financial goals through We Can We Do.

Financial literacy ignites the spirit of We Can We Do

Now is the time for our resilience to shine. In 2020, we are faced with the impact of the global pandemic but together, we will overcome the challenges.

The launch of We Can We Do signifies our commitment to support Malaysians in attaining their financial ambitions. We Can We Do is a localised version of the bank’s global brand philosophy: ‘Together we thrive’. Through this initiative, HSBC Malaysia aims to cultivate the Can-Do spirit in the local community by focusing on financial empowerment as a key enabler to help Malaysians achieve financial growth and freedom.

Despite the challenges we face today, our local mission is to help Malaysians reach their financial goals of tomorrow. Through the Can-Do spirit, we want to empower Malaysians, starting from a young age, to strive for more than what they have, achieve progression in their lives and achieve goals that they’ve always dreamt about. We believe this Can-Do spirit is important because it will drive Malaysians to do better and challenge the status quo to lead happier and healthier lives.

When the going gets tough, the tough stays resilient.

According to Financial Behaviour and State of Financial Well-Being of Malaysian Working Adults 2018 (AFBES18), a third of Malaysians are uncomfortable with their financial knowledge. AFBES18 also highlights that 53% of Malaysian respondents face difficulties with raising even RM1,000 for emergencies. To address this gap, HSBC Malaysia is spearheading a mission to instill financial literacy amongst the local communities to enable Malaysians to take charge of their financial life.

At HSBC, we believe we can turn our Cans into Dos with better financial knowledge. A strong understanding of personal finances and business financial knowledge is key to nurture the Can-Do spirit.

Stuart Milne, CEO of HSBC Malaysia believes it is more important than ever for people to possess the ability to make informed financial choices regarding saving, investing and borrowing, especially in the current climate, because the decisions we make today will affect our tomorrow.

“As an organisation that understands the economic and societal impact of financial literacy, we strongly advocate a proactive approach to financial literacy and that it needs to start from a younger age. It is our collective responsibility to raise financially-savvy leaders of tomorrow and to break the cycle of financial illiteracy,” says Milne.

We would like to make financial literacy accessible to all Malaysians because it is a key enabler that leads us to progress, prosperity and success.

We Can We Do initiative includes curated roundtable sessions and financial masterclasses led by HSBC’s own financial experts, industry leaders and financial-savvy Malaysians from reputable finance publications. These roundtable sessions will cover topics on finance for individuals, entrepreneurs and business owners, which aim to equip participants with financial tools and the know-how to help them better plot their financial future.

Recognising the importance of instilling financial literacy from young, HSBC Malaysia has partnered with the non-profit organization, Teach For Malaysia (TFM), to design a Financial Empowerment Programme that uses a game-based approach to help children understand key financial concepts.

The programme, which will be rolled out through a five-module financial literacy toolkit, will simulate real-life scenarios to guide children on financial concepts such as setting goals, budgeting, savings, how to identify and handle financial scams and how to develop good spending habits.

HSBC will also be featuring a series of local ‘Can-Do’ Heroes that have turned “Can” into “Do” as part of the initiative to motivate and inspire Malaysians. These ‘Can-Do’ Heroes come from all walks of life – from differently abled entrepreneurs to national badminton players to young volunteers – and their remarkable stories are a true embodiment of the ‘We Can We Do’ spirit.

“As we adjust to the new normal, it is also critical that each one of our staff displays that Can-Do spirit and take the actions necessary to help our customers get back on their feet,” says Milne.

HSBC is committed to be with Malaysians on their journey to achieve financial freedom and dreams by imparting financial wisdom and offering financial solutions.

What do you like to buy online? Travel seems to be a darling with 39% of Malaysians

spending their money online on holidays, followed by consumer electronics (17.3%), and furniture and household goods (13%).1 And it seems we’re just as happy shopping online from local stores as we are from overseas websites.1 Locally, our favourite online shopping sites include Lazada, 11street and Shopee, while the top three countries we shop overseas are China, Singapore and Japan.1

There’s good reason many of us are choosing to do our shopping online rather than in person. Shopping online can be fast, economical and very convenient. The recent health crisis that has kept us at home a lot more has probably introduced more of us to the convenience of shopping online as well. However, before you set yourself loose onto the internet marketplace, there are some tips about online shopping you should know. A smart online shopper can save time and money, but it’s important you don’t get caught out by scams or find yourself stuck with clothes that don’t fit.

Here are tips to help you make the most of your online shopping.

Hands up if you have shopped online. You are part of every one-in-two Malaysians who has shopped online.1

Be a Savvy Online Shopper

And it looks like you lot are just starting – the Malaysian e-commerce market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 24% to 2021.1

Take your timeIf you find something you really want, add it to your shopping basket and sit on it for a few days.2 Retailers track shopper activities, so many will nudge you with an email, and may even throw in a discount code, to motivate you to commit to the purchase.2 It makes waiting well worth it.2

Prices and discounts also fluctuate throughout the year.3 According to Lifehacker website, you’re more likely to find the most discounts in November and January, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays.3 March is the worst month for finding discounts – so if you’re thinking about making a major purchase online, you may want to give the month a miss.3

Voucher codes and coupons are your best friendUsing voucher codes and coupons can make online shopping genuinely cheaper.2 Imagine getting 20% off all your purchases just for signing up to a site.2 You can make what is already usually less expensive online shopping even more enjoyable and cheaper with some tips and tricks.2 With retailers desperately competing for customers, you can often take full advantage of cashback sites, voucher codes and price comparisons.2 Before you buy anything from an online store, you can even quickly Google-search the name of the company for any discounts or coupons available.3 There’s a good chance you may find a voucher or coupon code to apply to your purchase.3

Read the reviewsProduct reviews can be incredibly helpful when you’re making online purchases – especially if you’re buying a product or a brand you are not familiar with.3 Reviews can tell you if the product looks the way it does in photos or how it holds up over time.3 For clothes especially, they can give you valuable information about fit.3 Pay attention to patterns – if reviewer after reviewer says that a shirt runs small or that a chair that looks blue online is actually grey in reality, believe them.3

But, remember to read reviews with a pinch of salt.3 Most of the time, customer reviews can be really helpful, but sometimes they can be fake as well.3 Practice some healthy scepticism of online reviews.3 Spot fakes by keeping an eye out for reviews that are exceedingly enthusiastic or overly specific.3 If a product has a lot of reviews and they are all positive, that should raise alarm bells as well.3

Verify website securityMost online shopping websites offer secure shopping these days.4

But if they don’t, lurking criminals can capture all the information you enter into forms on those sites including your personal and credit card information.4 Choose to shop on secure sites. You can tell if a site is secure by the URL.4 A secure website address starts with https:// instead of http://. Secure sites also have a small lock icon to the left of the URL.4

Don’t shop on a shared device or in public Do your online shopping at home

on your computer or smart phone.4 At home, you know who accesses your devices.4 If you’re using a shared computer or public network to do your shopping – at the library, in a cafe or at work – you have no control over who else might be using that device or network.4 Nor can you control what kind of spyware or malware might be infecting that computer.4 So, it’s much safer to shop at home where you know both your device and network are secure.4

Create strong passwordsAccording to a survey by PCMag in Australia, 35%

of people never change their passwords.5 If you are like one of these people, make sure you are using uncrackable passwords.5 It is especially important when you are doing online banking and shopping.5 But sometimes, even your perfect password may not be perfect.5 The smarter move is to use a password manager to create virtually uncrackable passwords for you.5 The software will also keep track of your passwords and enter them – so you won’t have to worry about remembering all your passwords.5

Check statements regularlyWith online banking, you don’t need to wait till the end of the

month to check your statements.5 For example, you can log into HSBC online banking or the mobile banking app to view your credit card, debit card and bank account statements online.5 Look for any fraudulent charges, even originating from payment sites like PayPal.5 If you see something wrong, pick up the phone and call the bank to address the matter quickly.5

PRACTICE SAFE ONLINE SHOPPINGAs you shop online, it’s important to stay safe by using some common sense and following some practical advice.

Be wary of newsletter and email list sign-upsOften when you visit a shopping website, you’ll get a pop-up asking you to sign up for the site’s newsletter in exchange for an offer coupon or discount code.3 Or in many cases, you’ll automatically be signed up for email lists when you purchase something from an online store.3 While taking advantage of discount coupons may be a great way to save money, the emails you end up receiving may do more harm than good.3

The constant flow of emails prompt us to check out new products and sales when we otherwise wouldn’t, and can create a want or need where there isn’t one.3 For those who lack self-control, this could lead to more spending than necessary.3 Unsubscribing from email lists is a great way to decrease your desire to shop online.3

Avoid counterfeits and scamsIf it seems too good to be true, it probably is.3 You should remember this mantra when shopping online.3 Counterfeits are common online even on well-known sites like Amazon. It can be difficult to spot fakes online, but using common sense helps.3 Choose to buy directly from brands’ online stores rather than third parties and be suspicious of prices that seem unrealistically low.3 If it feels “off”, shop somewhere else.3

Now that you’re better informed to be a smarter online shopper, go forth and happy shopping…

For supported currencies: If you do not have sufficient foreign currency to complete a transaction, we will convert at prevailing rate as determined by the bank and bill you in Ringgit Malaysia. For unsupported currencies: The entire transaction amount shall be converted at a prevailing rate as determined by Visa International and billed to you in Ringgit Malaysia, except for cash withdrawals performed via HSBC Group ATMs (GATS) which the withdrawn amount will be automatically converted to Ringgit Malaysia at the prevailing rate as determined by the bank.

How does the card work?1. You can use the card locally to make RM transactions or make purchases overseas and online in a foreign currency.2. If you like to shop online, for example on Japan websites, you could start saving in Japanese Yen through your Everyday Global Account. 3. Then when you make a purchase on the websites - JPY10,000 in this case - we’ll deduct JPY10,000 from your linked HSBC Everyday Global Account with no hidden charges.4. If you don’t have enough foreign currency in your account (in this case JPY), we’ll convert it and you’ll be charged in RM with no administration charges.

HSBC Global Asset

Management

HSBC Global Asset Management

• HSBC Global Asset Management

HSBC

Global Asset Management

Global Asset Management

HSBC Global Asset Management

Lifehacker

HSBC Everyday Global Account 的

HSBC Everyday Global Visa Debit

Debit

HSBC EVERYDAY GLOBAL VISA DEBIT CARD

Amazon

Everyday Global Account节省更

HSBC Everyday Global Account
