Dear Arboretum Elementary Staff, Parents, Students, and Supporters: DONE Our PTO would like to welcome you to our school! For those of you who are unfamiliar with us, we are a volunteer organization made up of parents, teachers, administrators, and support staff who are all dedicated to the success-ful education of our children. We work hard to help make the school year both enjoyable and exciting for our students, teachers, parents, and families. The purpose of our organization is to aid the students and staff by providing support for both educational and recreational needs. Our main mission is to contribute to the posi-tive family community and raise funds for needed school items or events. We also pro-mote open communication between administration, teachers, and parents and love to en-courage Arboretum school spirit and pride. We use our resources, both manpower and monetary, to support all the efforts of the staff of our school. Everything we do is based on volunteers and we are always looking for those who’d like to help make a difference in the lives of the children. We hope that all families at Arbore-tum can participate in our social events and support fundraising efforts. Please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 26th for our 4th Annual Arboretum Dash! We have limited our fundraisers to this main event and also Art to Remember in December. We believe that these two fundraisers can fund our needs of our school community. Please see the attached list of Coordinator Chairs and reach out if you’d like to be in-volved. We are always open to new ideas, and appreciate the help and donations! Finally, we believe that it is the ultimate importance that we do everything to enhance the learning environment of our students. It takes us all working together to ensure that this happens. Thank you to the families that make Arboretum Elementary such a special place for our children to learn and grow! With Appreciation: Anne Blackburn, PTO President, and Sheila Weihert, Arboretum Principal Email: [email protected] and [email protected]

DISTRICT ASSESSMENTS

STAR TESTING: In September, we will begin conducting the STAR testing for grades 1-4. The STAR test is a computer test where students and teachers learn what stu-dents know. The STAR test offers us immediate feedback as well as helping students become familiar with standardized testing. Selected students are tested in STAR Reading. All 1st—4th will take the STAR Math test. PALS TESTING: Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students will complete PALS test-ing in the fall. Wisconsin teachers use PALS to identify students at risk of developing reading difficulties, diagnose students' knowledge of literacy fundamentals, monitor progress, and plan instruction that targets students' needs. Here are ways to help your child be successful when testing:

¨ Explain that the tests will show how much they have learned. ¨ Encourage them to try their best, but don’t feel stressed. ¨ If possible practice for the test. ¨ Limit activities and be sure they get to bed on time the night before tests. ¨ On test day, give them a nutritious breakfast. ¨ Let them know you will be proud of how they do.

Box Tops for Education

Welcome Back!!! If you have your summer packets complete, please don’t forget to turn them in! Check out our board right outside the school office as there is a lot of “BUZZ” going around about box tops…check out this short video (less than a mi-nute) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh94b2BvFK4&feature=youtu.be. It will show you how easy it is to scan your box tops – no more clipping – all you have to do is download the app and scan your receipt. Some of your fellow families have al-ready started earning money for Arboretum with their school shopping. I will still con-tinue to send home the box top collection sheets as there are still some of the “original” box tops that you will still need to clip and turn in. The box to turn them in is located under our board. Thank you for supporting your school.

Six Day Schedule

We are looking forward to another outstanding school year with your children. We are writing to let you know that we are continuing with the a six day rotating schedule. One of the intents of this format is to equitably distribute the amount of “specials” classes, regardless of your child’s homeroom. Your classroom teacher will be able to share with you what specials are on a day 1, a day 2, a day 3, etc. at the start of the year. The day 1-6 schedule is also on the Arboretum website and parent google calendar. In the event that school is can-celled for a day, the next day we have school will resume the day count. In other words, we will not skip days in the rotation. One of the biggest challenges may be remembering to have appropri-ate shoes for physical education class and having books to return dur-ing library time. Classroom teachers will provide reminders for li-brary time. We suggest that if students are not in the habit of wear-ing appropriate shoes for physical education on a daily basis, consider keeping a pair of tennis shoes at school. Additionally, instructional blocks for reading and math are more con-sistent across grade level teams. This provides new opportunities to include best practices into our instructional setting. We are excited about the opportunities that this schedule will provide for your child.

Respect At Arboretum we always focus on the whole child in addition to the academic learning. The most important thing we do at Arboretum is provide an environment for each child to feel warm, welcome, and love learning. As part of this focus, we choose a word of the month that reflects good character. Our word this month is respect. Throughout the month, teachers emphasize what respect looks like in our school. We work on respect of other people, ourselves, and our environment – from school, to playground, to country. We hope that you can take the time to talk with your child(ren) about respect and examples of respect in your home. As always, we appreciate your partnership in education!

Immunizations All schools in the state of Wisconsin are required early in every school year to document that each student is up-to-date with immunizations that protect against childhood illnesses. In order to make schools safe and healthy places for children to learn, we request your assistance in this task.

We are obligated to send parents letters and official forms notifying them if all appropriate immunizations for their child have not been reported to the school. It may be that your child has received the immunizations but we do not have that information on file. Please call the office to share that information with us (health office 849-1800 Extension 2). It may be necessary for you to call a clinic or health department locally or in a previous hometown to get needed information if you do not have a record.

If immunizations are lacking, your child may need to be immunized by your own health care provider or through the Dane County Public Health Department’s free immunization clinics (242-6520). Please call the school health office (849-1800 Extension 2) as soon as the new immunizations are received. We will need to continue to send official notices if we do not have the necessary information at school. If for personal, health, or religious reasons your child will not be receiving all required immunizations at this time, please read the Waiver section on the back of the yellow immunization card and sign accordingly. A doctor’s signature is required for a health waiver to be accepted. Please return this health information to the school office as soon as possible. We want to insure that all children are adequately protected against illness and have a successful year at school.

Thank you!

Kathy Grosskopf, Health Assistant [email protected]

Wendi Dorn, School Nurse Cell: 209-5555

From the Health Office As a parent/guardian, you often have to make the decision of whether or not to send your child to school if he/she has symptoms of an illness. Sometimes it’s hard to know if the symptoms will go away after a couple of hours, or progressively get worse throughout the day. As a guideline, fever (temperature of 100 or greater), vomiting, or diarrhea are considered signs of illness and are reasons to keep your child home to prevent exposing well children to illness. Other symptoms such as a severe rash or a severe sore throat (one that did not begin that morning) may also indicate illness and should be considered when deciding whether your child should attend school. Some children at school have immune systems that are fragile so what may seem a minor illness for one child could be very detrimental to another child. According to state law H49.01, any teacher, principal, or nurse may send home for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment, any pupil suspected of having a communicable disease. Some examples are: lice, strep throat, and impetigo. Contact our health assistant at 849-1800 (extension 2) or the Dane County Public Health Department at 242-6520 if you would like more information.

Medications Just a reminder that the medication consent forms are in the parent handbook, on the school district website, and in the school office. The consent form needs to be used and signed by the doctor any time prescribed medication is to be given at school. If it is an over-the-counter medication, only the parent has to sign the consent form. All medication needs to come to school in the original container.

Please call the attendance line at 849-1800 (extension 1) or email [email protected] before 8:30 a.m. if your child will be absent or tardy from school. Please provide the following information: your name, name of student, teacher’s name, reason for absence and if you would like homework collected. Parents may pick up homework at the end of the day on the homework table outside of the office.

Parent Drop Off and Pick Up Locations

pick up area.

Please pull ahead as far as you can to the stop sign in front of the main entrance. Parents should remain in the car as chil-dren are dropped off. If you would like to walk your child into school or get out of your vehicle, then you need to park in the parking lot and walk your child into the building.

The parent pick up loop is also the perimeter of the parking lot. Children are to wait until their parent comes to the front area of the

school prior to going to the vehicle. Again, children are not allowed to walk through the parking lot unless escort-ed by an adult. Parents are always welcome to park their vehicles and walk to pick up their children from school.

The busses will temporarily block departing car traffic to insure the safe crossing of our walking and biking stu-dents.

Students that walk or bike to school will be given instruc-tions on how to leave our school area safely.

The west driveway is the only inbound driveway to Arbore-tum Elementary. All busses and cars will use this driveway to enter the Arboretum Ele-mentary parking lot, parent drop off/pick up loop, and bus loop. The other two drive-ways are exit driveways only. Please be cautious for chil-dren and parents walking near all driveways.

No children are allowed to walk through the parking lot unless escorted by an adult.

The parent drop off and pick up area is directly in front of the main entrance. Please follow the perimeter of the parking lot to the drop off/

Recycle Ink and Toner Ever wonder what to do with your used ink and toner cartridge from your home desktop printer? Instead of throwing them away, why not donate them to Arboretum Elementary School? We belong to a program in which we get paid for every toner cartridge that we send. The more we send, the more we receive in return. You will not only help your school, but will be helping the en-vironment as well. Please have your child bring them to school either in their original box, or in a plastic bag. They can give them to their teacher or to Mr. Miller.

Taher Food Service Payment Information Please send all food service payments and semester milk payments to Food Service at 101 School Drive during the school year. Payments are no longer to be sent to each individual school. The preferred method of payment is to pay online at www.waunakee.k12.wi.us and go to the Food Service tab for further instruction. The online system is also available to pay your semester milk payments. The online pay system can be accessed thru Infinite Campus. The system works as a pre-paid lunch account. The system works with individual student accounts not family accounts. All payments are made to an individual student not a family account. All payments other than online payments are encouraged to be either sent to the Food Service of-fice at 101 School Dr. (lower level), or dropped off at that location. Please be reminded that your student will be offered semester morning milk only if we have your payment for first half year when school starts on September 3. Your milk payment is separate from your lunch ac-count and the semester milk amount is $36.00 per half year.

Food Service continues to work with local farmers to bring farm fresh produce to your stu-dents. We continue to offer two lunch choices this year at all elementary schools; one choice is a made-from-scratch meal and one choice is a kid-friendly choice. The Intermediate school will follow a similar lunch choice for their Classic Café as the Elementary Schools, but we will continue to offer the"Creation Station Lite" on Tuesday and Thursdays for a slightly higher price mark. Additionally, a la carte choices will be made available at the Intermediate School level during the lunch hour. Breakfast is also served daily (see separate breakfast menu). The Fruit & Vegetable Bar will still be offered to your students with fruits and vegeta-bles but there is no requirement as in the past that your student must take items of a certain quantity. They can opt for what they want to take. Lunch will consist of an entrée, fruit and vegetables(hot and cold), a bread serving and a milk or a mini bottle of water. Dessert will also be offered some weeks of the month. The food service department recognizes that good nu-trition has a positive effect on learning and good health. It is our mission to provide nutritious meals to students, staff and the community, in a caring and customer-friendly environment. Our menu’s consist of freshly prepared foods, no trans fats, fresh fruit and vegetables and foods that are minimally processed.

Physical Education News and Notes

Welcome to a new school year! My name is Mr. Holler and I will be working with your child this year as his/her physical education teacher. I am looking forward to working with your child and assisting him/her as he/she continues to grow physically, emotionally, and intellectually. With you and I working to-gether, we can help your child have a successful school year. I would greatly appreciate it if you could do the following things: 1. Please make sure that your child has a good pair of tennis shoes for class. The safety of your child and other children improves greatly if laces are able to be tied, toes are covered, and shoes stay on the feet when moving. Dress shoes/sandals/flip flops/boots should not be worn to PE class. If your child likes to wear to school shoes that are not tennis shoes, please keep a pair of tennis shoes at school for your child to change into on PE days. 2. Please remind your child to wear appropriate attire on Physical Education days. This may include shorts, t-shirts, socks and tennis shoes on warm days and sweat pants, sweat shirts when the weather becomes a little bit cooler outside. Also, many times throughout the year we will be working on activities where your child will be moving on the floor and grass (sitting, crawling, rolling, etc.). Thus, make sure your child wears clothes that you don’t mind if a little dirt gets on them. 3. Please make an effort to talk with your child about what he/she is learning in Physical Education class as well as if he/she is being respectful, responsi-ble, and safe. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at [email protected] regarding any matters that may affect your child’s participation in Physical Education class. Once again, I am looking forward to working with your child and helping him/her to become smarter, kinder and healthier. Stay Healthy, Mr. Holler Physical Education
