Doosra, in cricketing ter-minology, refers to a ballthat’s intended to be an
off-spinner but ends up turningthe other way. But AnandRaghav, playwright and direc-tor, has used it to refer to theshift in the outlook of his pro-tagonist.
“I gave Shraddha, the theatregroup, three scripts,” he startsoff, “Two of them werefamily-oriented and oneof them was based oncricket. I preferred totake up the cricket sub-ject as it was on a larger scale.I’m happy that it’s come out welland the credit goes to Shraddha(who got accolades for their ear-lier production titledDhanushkoti), for taking it up.”
The next four days will be
crucial for him as it’ll showcaseChennai’s response to his Tamilplay titled Doosra — the storyof cricket. The play is based ina contemporary backgroundand seeks to showcase how suc-cess and fame can change a per-son’s outlook towards life.
“But that’s not all,” he adds,“I plan to showcase a contrastof a father, who is a failed crick-
eter who believes invalues. But the son,who gets into cricket,is lured by money andpolitics and is willing
to compromise on values.”Doosra is also special because
it marks the coming together ofDelhi Ganesh and Kathadi Ra-mamurthy. So, how was it di-recting these two theatre veter-ans? “It was a fantastic experi-
ence,” states Anand, “DelhiGanesh can shift gears on stagevery quickly. He switches on andoff depending on the require-ments of the scene. Despite hisexperience, he’s very sincereand approachable. With Katha-di Ramamurthy, the dialoguesgot their due. His style of de-livering dialogues is the best!”With the cricket World Cup andthe IPL around the corner, thetheme is topical and Anand’shopes that will help it strike achord with the Chennai audi-ences. “Those who do not followcricket will like the characteri-sation in the play. And, thosewho understand the intricaciesof game of cricket will appre-ciate it even better,” he signs off.
