MONDAY 24 JANUARY 2011 CHENNAI TIMES 5 P E O P L E D oosra, in cricketing ter- minology, refers to a ball that’s intended to be an off-spinner but ends up turning the other way. But Anand Raghav, playwright and direc- tor, has used it to refer to the shift in the outlook of his pro- tagonist. “I gave Shraddha, the theatre group, three scripts,” he starts off, “Two of them were family-oriented and one of them was based on cricket. I preferred to take up the cricket sub- ject as it was on a larger scale. I’m happy that it’s come out well and the credit goes to Shraddha (who got accolades for their ear- lier production titled Dhanushkoti), for taking it up.” The next four days will be crucial for him as it’ll showcase Chennai’s response to his Tamil play titled Doosra — the story of cricket. The play is based in a contemporary background and seeks to showcase how suc- cess and fame can change a per- son’s outlook towards life. “But that’s not all,” he adds, “I plan to showcase a contrast of a father, who is a failed crick- eter who believes in values. But the son, who gets into cricket, is lured by money and politics and is willing to compromise on values.” Doosra is also special because it marks the coming together of Delhi Ganesh and Kathadi Ra- mamurthy. So, how was it di- recting these two theatre veter- ans? “It was a fantastic experi- ence,” states Anand, “Delhi Ganesh can shift gears on stage very quickly. He switches on and off depending on the require- ments of the scene. Despite his experience, he’s very sincere and approachable. With Katha- di Ramamurthy, the dialogues got their due. His style of de- livering dialogues is the best!” With the cricket World Cup and the IPL around the corner, the theme is topical and Anand’s hopes that will help it strike a chord with the Chennai audi- ences. “Those who do not follow cricket will like the characteri- sation in the play. And, those who understand the intricacies of game of cricket will appre- ciate it even better,” he signs off.
