    divorcing creativity from skills. Over a period oftime,we get so used to our jobs that we go on an au-tomatic mode, which creates monotony. It is up tous to keep reinventing ourselves and our jobs bytaking on new challenges to innovate even when it

    is not imperative.After all, existing in an organisa-tion is not the goal; excelling and flourishing in itis.

    Bangalore offers a comfortablelifestyle for professionals for a vari-ety of reasons. The multi-cultural

    ambience makes it comfortable for anyperson to settle into city life.Salaries arepretty much in the white-collar bracket,especially for those in the IT sector - sotheir savings are geared towards bigger in-vestments like automobile, home or eventravel, says Sampath Kumar, chief finan-cial officer, Bharti AXA General Insur-ance.There are many affordable accom-modation and lodging options such as hos-tels, paying guest accommodations,singlebedroom apartments and shared accom-

    modation. With the real-estate sector hav-ing tremendously developed, there are ac-commodation options available at allranges, for singles in all locations,adds

    Suman Reddy, VP and MD, Pegasystems.It has a vibrant cultural scene ranging

    from theatre to contemporary art, musicand dance.It also has the best schools forhigher learning, especially executive /management programmes. Safety and se-curity for women are better here com-pared to other Indian cities,says MadhuGanguly, founder of Live Empowered,Bangalore. You wish to move to Bangalorebut is the city also looking for someonelike you? An overall development acrosssectors like FMCG, real estate,BFSI andinfrastructure will help achieve the lev-el of desired growth. Bangalore is al-ready an established IT hub; we needmore talent from these sectors to take

    the city to the next level, says Kumar.Bangalore, in my opinion, needs moreand more innovation for the next wave ofgrowth.Given the strong IT presence inthe city, the global IT talent pool needs toshift towards innovation.The next phaseof growth will be led by innovation, bothfor the city and IT industr y, adds Reddy.And whatever your area of expertise,there are certain soft skills that you justcannot do without.Todays need is for tal-ented young professionals with a globaloutlook who are self-expressed, passionate,willing to learn and develop and independ-ent thinkers with the courage to stand outand stand up. Bangalore needs individualswho are not only responsible towardsthemselves and their career growth, butalso inclined to give back to the communi-ty and take up new causes for the better-ment of the workplace and world around,avers Ganguly.

    Bangalore has long been the undisputedIT hub of the country. The IT industryhas defined the city since the last two

    decades and continues to grow tremen-dously. The city is one of the top IT rev-enue generators in the country, agreesReddy. However,ot her sectors such ashealth,education, automobile and aero-space are also booming,according to San-jay Agarwal, general manager (sales),

    Salarpuria Sattva, Bangalore-based realestate company. IT / ITeS (technicalprojects, sales and marketing) will con-tinue to play a key role in defining Ban-galore along with aerospace, semiconduc-tor and pharma sectors. Biotechnologyand automotives will develop even more.Entrepreneurs will continue to breed,adds Gangu ly.

    Known for its pleasant weather and cos-mopolitan environment,Bangalore ispoised for further growth in the comingyears.

    THE WINNERS SO FAR Bangalore calling!Where is the garden city of India headed in the timesto come?Ankita Shreeram explores

    WHAT DOES BANGALORESTAND FOR, IN YOUR MIND?KUMAR: A cosmopolitan city that offers

    immense opportunities for everyone;AGARWAL: A place for the urban

    population,which is upwardly mobile andseeks and demands the best in life;

    REDDY: Bangalore stands for excellentculture,diversity,engineering talent and acity that rises to challenges.

    Imagine burning out a year or two into your job.This should have been unthinkable but in to-days high-pressure roles, employees frequently

    report feeling exhausted and at the end of theirtether in the early stages of their career. Imbal-ances between work and life are common reasonsfor an early burnout of employees. It is importantto note that work-induced stress can result from agap between employee competency and expectedjob performance, says Bhasker Bhandary, director HR, Acer India.

    A burnout may creep up when youre least ex-pecting it. People reach a burnout stage whenthey dont have time for themselves because theyget very involved in their work. Weve all been inone of those situations - when your favourite proj-ect is cancelled after weeks of hard work; when acustomer snaps at you unfairly;

    when your best friend (and co-work-er) is laid-off suddenly; or your boss assigns youmore work when youre already overloaded. Theseare the times when the burnout stage sets in, saysSheena Agarwaal, principal consultant, UrbanistaImage Consulting LLP.

    What can organisations do to prevent employeesfrom burning-out too early? Organisations withfewer cases of burnout are those where everybodyis treated with respect and care; where managersbelieve in inspiring their teams to deliver better

    through coaching and mentoring and not throughcarrot and stick; where there is a sharing of knowl-edge for enhancing the competencies and empow-ering them to take decisions, suggests SanjeevDixit, chief people officer, Allied Blenders and Dis-tillers. The organisation should provide an envi-ronment, which supports the individuals careeraspirations while driving the organisationsgrowth. The organisation could achieve more if itcould build on the individuals strengths ratherthan harp on their areas of improvement, sharesAarthi Rajaraman, director HR, Williams Lea In-dia.

    There is much that can be done at an individuallevel as well. Burnouts can very often be avoidedby three simple steps: increasing ones patiencelevels; adoption of relaxation techniques; recognis-ing and admitting when one is over-burdened withwork / problems, opines Dr Sriharsha A Achar,chief people officer, Apollo Munich Health Insur-ance.

    Some studies suggest that burnout is a result of
