TOKYO TECH MUSLIM GUIDE – DECEMBER 2014 2

Introduction

Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh,

Welcome to all new muslim students of tokodai!!

“Whosoever relieves from a believer some grief pertaining

to this world, Allah will relieve from him some grief

pertaining to the Hereafter. ... Allah will aid a servant (of

His) so long as the servant aids his brother. Whosoever

follows a path to seek knowledge therein, Allah will make

easy for him a path to Paradise. ...” [Hadist Muslim]

In this book, we want to share a little bit information

about adaptive guide for muslim (especially in japan).

Maybe most of us used to live in muslim-majority

country, so coming here to Japan which is a muslim-

minority country, we might find some difficulties. Here

we would like to share two most common “problem” we

find here as a muslim, and how to deal (get used) with it.

Hopefully this book will help you to adapt in Japan

Halal Food in Japan

In muslim-majority countries, we can find halal food so easily, in

selective and careful to find food that we can consume.

Below is the list of haram and doubted ingredients list based on

the analysis of our muslim brothers and sisters who had lived in

japan for years. For the main references, you can see in here:

Halal Food in Campus Cafetaria

Alhamdulillah, in campus cafeteria, halal-labeled menu is

already provided. This menu was consulted with Tokyo tech

muslim community in tokodai since around 5 years ago. This

halal-labeled menu follow these criteria:

- No Pork or its by-product

- No Alcohol of any source

- Meat slaughtered according to Islamic law

- No mixing with non Halal food stuff

- All ingredients have been checked

- Separate utensils are used

Make sure to say “halal” when you want to order this menu,

for example “halal beef kare onegaishimasu”. There are various

halal-labeled menu provided, for example in suzukakedai campus

cafeteria, they provide:

1. タンドリチキン (Halal tandori chiken)*

2. チキントマト煮 (Halal chiken tomato – ni)*

3. 南蛮カラシチキン (Halal Nanban karashi chiken)*

4. チキンカレー煮 (Halal chiken kare – ni)*

*different for each day, usually you just need to say “halal

chicken”

5. ビーフカレー (Halal beef kare)

6. ラーメン (Halal ramen)

7. Halal Gyudon and the other halal-labeled menu

(sometimes)

TOKYO TECH MUSLIM GUIDE – DECEMBER 2014 7

Ookayama campus cafeteria also provide some halal-labeled

menu (some of them is the same with above).

Besides, suzukakedai campus cafeteria also provide salad bar and

hot bar.

The other alternative for halal-labeled menu is in Co-op (campus

convenient store). There are 3 types halal-labeled pizza slice

(Thailand product).

The other alternative is order food from muslim friends. Some

Indonesian muslim student (for example Gerald – suzukakedai

campus, Radon, and Sisters from middle east – ookayama

campus) provide food cooked by themselves which is halal and

delicious, guaranteed!

Beside halal-labeled menu, campus cafeteria also sell various

fish-based menu (grilled or fried), egg, fried vegetable, and other

food that by using “naked eye” we don’t see pork or other

materials that is forbidden.

claim their food are halal, even though they still don’t get halal

certified yet. Generally, the restaurants are from Middle East,

India, Indonesia, etc.

Other Food

1. Sushi

This is very famous japanese food. Sushi is relatively easy to find

here, from the exclusive high-price sushi restaurant, to 100yen

each sushi bar. Basically, what they serve there are fish, seafood,

egg, and vegetables (eventhough there are also pork-sushi, but its

quite easy to identify). Please ask the staff if you concern about

mirin/alcohol in the rice.

TOKYO TECH MUSLIM GUIDE – DECEMBER 2014 10

2. Soba and udon

These are also very famous japanese food, and easy to find. Just

make sure you don’t order soba/udon that contain meat. Usually,

there are some option like: kakiyage, chikuwa, or ebi tempura

soba/udon.

One of the easiest udon/soba restaurant to find is Sibu-Soba (し

ぶそば ). It usually located in big train station like Aobadai,

Nagatsuta, Chuorinkan, etc. In Aobadai and Chuorinkan, it is even

located inside station gate, so we can go there, eat, and then go

away without paying train ticket to that station.

3. Western Restaurant

Western restaurant are everywhere . Some of them that we

usually go to are:

Seizeriya, we can choose the food based on this allergy list:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/1lz8p6uxns71by4/Seizeriya%20

Alergy.pdf

Gasto, etc.

Packaged Food

For packaged food/drink, the way to identify is by looking

through its ingredients and allergy list. Full of kanji, of course.

That’s why it is strongly recommended to memorize (at least)

kanji character for forbiden materials.

TOKYO TECH MUSLIM GUIDE – DECEMBER 2014 11

Actually there are already muslim brothers/sisters that sort

many kinds of packaged food/drink that we, muslim, can

consume. They even ask to the food company to confirm the

ingredient. Here is the link:

TOKYO TECH MUSLIM GUIDE – DECEMBER 2014 12

Salat / Prayer

Salat / Prayer is one of biggest compulsory in Islamic way

of life. We can see it in many place of Qur’an that the

believer is the people who salat. Salat differentiate

between Muslim and non-muslim. Salat is one of five

pillar in islam as explained in detail at Hadith Muslim

(Imam Nawawi No 2). Also, the first thing that people will

be questioned in the day of judgement is their salat

(Hadith Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, An Nasai, Abu Hakim).

Therefore we need to pay big attention to this even

though we live in muslim-minority country.

For daily salat, we can perform anywhere since the

(whole) earth had been made a mosque (place for prayer)

and a means of purification (see Hadith Bukhari 355,

Muslim 521). That’s why if we cannot find mosque (a

building intended for praying), then we can perform daily

jama’ah prayer anywhere. From here also we can see

several opinion between scholars especially for Friday

prayer. Malikiyah said that Friday prayer must be

perform at mosque (building intended for praying), as for

Hanafiyah, Syafi’i, and Hambali said that it could be

perform anywhere. Knowing this situation, we can pray

jum’ah in mushalla at campus.

Mushalla at Campus

Alhamdulillah in tokodai campus there are also several places we

usually use to perform salat.

In Ookayama Campus:

TOKYO TECH MUSLIM GUIDE – DECEMBER 2014 13

1. S3 (South Building 3), 10+ floor : Also held Jama’ah

for daily salat (time changes every month, watch the

announcement board)

2. W9 (West Building 9) the top+ floor

3. Ishikawadai 1 Building the top+ floor

4. Midorigaoka area, nuclear building

and for Friday salat (start at 12.30) we use classroom 5 in

International Student Center (W1).

In suzukakedai campus:

1. B2 Building, 12+ floor : Friday salat is held (usually at

12.30)

TOKYO TECH MUSLIM GUIDE – DECEMBER 2014 14

2. J2 Building, 20th floor : Jama’ah for daily salat is held

(time changes)

3. G1 Building 10+ floor

4. G5 Building 9+ floor

In tamachi campus: (No data)

When performing ablution (wudhu), please take care that the

water when we clean our leg is not spoiled on the floor. As we

know that, dry toilet is considered as clean in Japan. Because the

toilet in japan is not designed for wudhu, we need to consider

several strategy:

1. Keep your wudhu from your home until going back home.

2. Perform wudhu in special basin for cleaning the mop, not

on the wastafel.

3. Perform wudhu by wiping the khuf.

Every ignorance in this manner, will only lead to opinion that

muslim people is dirty/ignorance by Japanese people.

TOKYO TECH MUSLIM GUIDE – DECEMBER 2014 15

Mosque Around Tokyo

There are several masjid and mushalla around Tokyo and

yokohama, unfortunately, the location are relatively far from

campus. This is the link of masjid map in Tokyo and yokohama

http://goo.gl/lenmrw

Strategy for Shalat Outside Campus/Mosque

Other places? Actually, all places can be used to perform

salat except toilet, graveyard, or other unclean place

(contaminated with najis, such as garbage yard, slaughter

place, etc). But of course we still need to consider other

factors as well. Try to find place that not disturbing other

people activity, as well as not disturbing our

concentration when salat. Usually, we use place like:

park, car parking, emergency stairs, etc. Try to ask

permission if there is an officer around.

How to ask permission: “Koko de reihai shitemo ii

desuka?” (Can I pray here?)

(Yoyogi Uehara Park and Tokyo sky tree-350m)
