Kindergarten Registration Old West End Academy Elementary School is looking for Kindergarten students for the 2018-2019 school year. If you know of a child who will be 5 years old by September 30, 2018, please encourage the family to enroll their child at OWEA School. Any questions, please contact Mrs. Denise in the main office at 419-671-4700. OWEA is a great place to learn!!! Upon registering your kindergarten student for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year, please have your child's immunization record, birth certificate, your ID, custody papers (if appli-cable) and three (3) proofs of residency with you.

Parents, please remember that you must have your 10 volunteer hours completed by May 11th or your child/ren will not be included on our class lists for the next school year. Also, parents of our eighth grade students, you must also have these hours completed or your eighth grader will not be permitted to participate in the end of the year “Separation Cere-mony.” Time is running out. What is PBIS?

Old West End Academy is in its fifth year of acknowledging positive student behavior. By using this PBIS system, (Positive Behavior In-tervention System), our students earn tickets which they can use to purchase items they may want from our school store. PBIS helps our staff focus on the positive behaviors and help students to recog-nize what they do right. This system helps to create a positive learn-ing environment in our school.

Remind your child to follow the 3BR’s; Be Responsible, Be Respect-able and Be Ready.

SPRING ALLERGIES Spring will be here soon, at least I hope! With spring comes pollen which can cause symptoms of seasonal allergies. Allergies are a leading cause of missed school days for children. If you suffer from allergies, you know the symptoms: coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, run-ny nose, and scratchy throat. It’s now peak season for allergy and asthma sufferers, and a perfect time to recognize the causes of asthma and allergies to best prevent and treat attacks. Common allergens and irritants found in and around the home are pollen, dust mites, mold, insect droppings, pet dander, and secondhand smoke. Ex-posure to these allergens can even bring about a serious asthma attack. Other asthma triggers include: respiratory infections, pollen (trees, grasses, weeds) air pollution, food, allergies, cleaning products, perfumes, exercise, and cold air exposure. Common asthma symptoms include wheezing, short-ness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. Asthma cannot be cured but it can be controlled. Make sure your child’s teachers and coaches are aware of your child’s asth-ma so they can provide the necessary help. Talk to your pediatrician about the best daily management for your child’s symptoms. For more helpful information check out CDC’s website: : https://www.cdc.gov/asthma/faqs.htm REMINDER Ohio School Vaccination Requirements include a Tdap vaccine booster shot and a Meningitis shot for all children entering the 7th grade. Lead Poisoning Recently there has been a lot in the news in regards to increased lead levels in children. Childhood lead poisoning is one of the most common and avoida-ble pediatric health problems in the United States today. Lead is a heavy metal which is found in old paint, dust, outside dirt, old plumbing and other common places. When people, especially children, come in contact with lead in their homes, work, or play places, it may interfere with normal growth and development. This may result in problems like poor sleep, poor growth, learning problems or behavior issues. Signs and symptoms of lead poison-ing, if any, usually do not appear until dangerous amounts of lead have ac-cumulated in the child’s brain and body. There is no safe level of lead in the body. Parents, schools and health care providers all need to do their part in reducing and recognizing lead exposure in children. Below is a website developed by The University of Toledo nursing students. It has a lot of information on the effects of lead on children. http://www.utoledo.edu/nursing/research/lead-poison-prevention/parent.html Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
