A Note from the Nurses Office

Dear Parents,

As everyone is now settling into their routines I would like to take the

opportunity to make you aware of the information about Head lice on the TIS

Nurses web site.

Due to the frequency of head lice within the younger school age students it is

important for parents to be aware of the signs of head lice and to routinely

check your child’s scalp and hair.

Please refer to the TIS web site or the CDC site for information. If you find that

your child does have signs of head lice He/she will need treatment before

returning to school. Please contact the nurse so we may track the incidence of

head lice within the school. If your child is found to have head lice while at

school The Nurse will call a parent to inform you of the findings and the need

for treatment. Please call the Nurses office with any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your help in the attempt to keep the occurrence of Lice to a

minimum

Tolland Library Open House Set for Sept. 22

Tolland students, parents, and school staff are invited to come explore the newly renovated library during an open house on Saturday, Sept. 22 that will feature poetry readings, children’s activities, musical performances and demonstrations of library databases.

The event, set for 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the library at 21 Tolland Green, will also give the public a chance to meet new Library Director Barbara Pettijohn, who joined the Tolland staff last fall just after the renovation project began.

The library staff, the Friends of the Tolland Public Library, the Tolland Library Board and the Tolland Public Library Foundation are sponsoring the fun-filled day for library patrons and town residents. Highlights will include music by “The Country Duo” at 11 a.m.; Irish fiddler Brian Russell at 12:30 p.m.; cake and refreshments at 12:15 p.m.; and face painting and a children’s craft at 1 p.m. Library patrons may also enter a drawing for a Nook (drawing will be held at 2:30 p.m.)

Tolland Elementary PTO Newsletter

September 2012 President's Report

Karen Moran, [email protected], 860-870-1111

It was great to see everyone at our Back-to-School Bonanza picking up their supplies and preparing for the school

year! It's such an exciting time of year, and I hope everyone's school year is off to a successful start! If you did not

get a chance to grab your excuse pads or calendars, there are order forms on our website. Just send into school with

your payment, and we will get them home to you! I know I can't function without mine!

Many of our TEPTO volunteers have been busy getting our fundraisers and events in place for the fall. They are all

spotlighted in this newsletter so read on to find out all about what's coming up! One of my kids' favorite events is the

Ice Cream Social where they get to enjoy their own specially created sundae and see their past and present teachers

from school....and, of course, visit with friends. This is a popular event so I recommend pre-ordering your sundaes. If

you can spare some time to help set-up, scoop ice cream or clean-up, it is greatly appreciated! Hope to see you on

the 28th!

I wanted to mention that we will not be selling Entertainment Books this year. If you need to purchase one, there may

be other organizations in town that are selling them and would appreciate your support. Also, in regards to our

fundraisers, I want to stress that we try to offer a variety of fundraisers for our school families, but we do not expect

you to participate in all of them. Our fall fundraisers are great for gift-giving, like the fun-shaped pasta with every

shape imaginable, and the Art-to-Remember fundraiser featuring your child's artwork. The Lyman Orchard pies are

always delicious for Thanksgiving! We greatly appreciate any support you can give us, and please remember that

the funds we raise go directly back to our elementary schools through field trips for each grade, school assemblies,

books for the libraries, curriculum support for our teachers and so much more! And we're not just about

fundraising....we plan family events for everyone to enjoy too. Stay tuned for details on our annual Night of Giving

where children can participate in different charity activities and give back to their community.

Our volunteers are our greatest assets! We could not do all that we do without the help of our parent volunteers! It is

a wonderful feeling knowing that just by helping a little bit, you are contributing to the success of our schools.....and

we thank you for that! Whether you are a new parent to our school system or a seasoned veteran, we look forward to

seeing you! And feel free to contact anyone on the Board if you have any questions about how things work or are

interested in volunteering your time. We don't send much paper home anymore, so if you haven't already, please

sign up for our E-mail blasts or "like" us on Facebook to get all of our communications, as well as our requests for

help with a fundraiser or event. Go to our website: www.tepto.com and contact our membership coordinator, Colleen

Yudichak, to get signed up. I wish everyone a fantastic year ahead!

Birch Grove Mileage Club

Jenn Poulos, [email protected], 860-871-5937

Lisa Maramo, [email protected], 860-872-5502

First and second grade parents: help is needed for Mileage Club at Birch Grove! Mileage Club is a running/walking

program for first and second graders that takes place during recess. Students who choose to participate in Mileage

Club are given a punch card; they run or walk around the recess field and earn one hole punch on their card for every

lap done. As students complete cards, they earn toe tokens and other fun prizes. The kids get so excited to see their

cards fill up, and it’s a great way to encourage them to be active. However, we can’t run this popular program

without volunteers!

How can you help? All it takes is 30 minutes per week of your time. As a volunteer, you will meet the kids on the

recess field, hand out their cards, and then stand at the designated "start" spot and hole-punch their cards as they

complete their laps. It's easy, fun, and a nice way to get to see your child at school! Younger siblings are welcome.

We are looking for help during the following times on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Help is needed for all

shifts but especially for the first grade recess times.

First grade: 11:30 - 12:00 (Gonzalez, McDonald, J. Moynihan, S. Moynihan, Vallone). 12:00 - 12:30 (Beaulieu, Bretz,

Madigan, Young).

Second Grade: 12:35 - 1:05 (Grotton, Little, Ober, Rallo, Semrow). 1:05 - 1:35 (Barna, Fuller, Tyler, Wasco).

If you are able to volunteer, please contact Jenn Poulos at [email protected] or 871-5937 with your available

day and time. Thank you!

TIS Mileage Club

Jen Tracy, [email protected], 462-1453

Let’s get moving! Look for volunteer forms coming home soon. We need volunteer help at each of the recesses at

TIS. This program is run completely by volunteers. Many students participate and it gives them another option at

recess. Please consider helping at your child’s recess once a week: 5th Grade: 11:15 – 11:35, 4

th Grade: 11:50 –

12:15, 3rd

Grade (B): 12:20 – 12:50, 3rd

Grade (A): 12:50 – 1:20. Thank you!

Anne Hill, [email protected]

A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped with the School Supply Toolboxes! We had a great crew that helped

unload and set up all the boxes in preparation for pick-up. A total of 691 supply boxes were distributed

by volunteers at the Back-to-School Bonanza! We are grateful for everyone who gave their time to help out with this

fundraiser during a very busy week.

HELP WANTED!

School Beautification

Cheryl Nicholas, [email protected], 817-5441

We are looking for someone to take over this position next year, but THIS year would be a great time to “shadow” the

current coordinator. It involves planning a time to have volunteers tend to the TEPTO-sponsored islands at Birch

Grove and TIS. You do not have to have a green thumb for this very rewarding job!!

Staff Appreciation

Karen Moran, [email protected], 870-1111

A few times a year, we like to show our appreciation for the teachers and staff at both schools for the hard work they

put in every day for our students. Two people are needed to help organize these events starting with some fall

themed treats. Maybe you and a friend might be interested?
