Congratulations Fox - Year 10

Earlier this year Fox applied for and wasaccepted in an exciting new STEM project.

In the first week of the Christmas holiday,Fox will be attending the Aboriginal SummerSchool for Excellence in Technology andScience (ASSETS) at Townsville's JamesCook University. ASSETS is just one part ofthe Indigenous STEM Education program

managed by CSIRO and funded by the BHP Billiton Foundationaimed at improving participation and achievement of Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Fox will attend the residential summer school for Year 10Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who areinterested in and have success in STEM subjects. There is alsoa strong cultural component to the ASSETS program. Fox is amember of the Wulli Wulli nation from the Central Queenslandarea around the Dawson River. At the summer school, Fox willwork with scientists and other students to develop his researchand study skills. One of the great things about the ASSETSprogram is the career focus along with the mentoring programthat follows the summer school.

What Floats Your Boat?

Have you ever wanted to pull arabbit out of a hat? During Term 3the Year 7 Lighthouse studentshad the opportunity to choosewhat they wanted to learn aboutby completing a Passion BasedLearning (PBL) task.

The purpose of this task was for thestudents to learn something new;something that they had always wanted todo. Ideas included learning how to play anew instrument, writing a book and buildinga model of something. Learning to cook, building an app, making a movie, learningmagic tricks and learning about culture and heritage were alsoinvestigated. We had architects, interior designers, photographers, bakers, painters and more. There wasabsolutely no limit as to what they could learn as long as theywere passionate about the subject area.

Throughout the term, students gained new skills, knowledgeand understanding about something that was important tothem. During the learning journey, students wrote blog entriesabout what they were learning, what was going well and whatwasn’t working. They also presented their learning at an Expoafternoon in the second last week of term.

The Pod was buzzing as parents, staff andvisitors made their way through O’Neill Podto view the learning journey of our students. We were excited to see so many guests andthe students are to be congratulated on theconfident way they presented their learning.

Meet...SarahAll of our teachers have a passion forteaching our younger students, none moreso that Sarah Cox. In the two years thatSarah has been with us, she has taken onthe coveted role of Year 8 StudentCo-Ordinator and done so with amazingenthusiasm.

Here are a few words from Sarah.

I began at Forest Lake in 2014 on what was initially, one morein a long line of short term contracts. Shortly after starting hereI fell in love with everything the school had to offer to bothstudents and staff and I have really enjoyed working here eversince.

I have only been teaching since 2012 but in that time Ideveloped a passion for working with junior students andhelping them deal with the issues that come with being a youngadolescent.

This year I stepped up to the role of being a Year 8Co-Ordinator and have enjoyed being able to get to know thestudents and support them on their learning journey.

Prior to teaching I worked for a pharmaceutical company aftergetting my Science Degree but I knew very quickly that I neededto work in an industry where I could contribute more and thiswas a big part of why I decided to become a teacher.

My biggest philosophy when it comes to life is that you shouldalways put in more than you get out.

I’m often encouraging students to do this in a number of waysbut I strongly believe that you speak more strongly with actionsthan with words. Because of this, I feel like it is my responsibilityto help those that can’t help themselves.

Multi-Cultural Festival

MULTIFEST 2016

Following months of painstakingpreparation and planning, Forest LakeState High School’s multi-cultural groupmade their way to Beenleigh State HighSchool to perform alongside otherBrisbane high schools as part of theannual Multi-Cultural Festival forSecondary Schools. This event has grownover the past decade where schoolsperform demonstrating pride in not only

their school, but in the different cultural identities within theirschool communities. This year we were represented by theSamoan, Cook Island and African cultures.

Our students represented the school demonstrating our PRIDEvalues and, along with eight other schools, enjoyed the dayimmensely as they shared their cultures in the form of songand dance. The tone for the day was one of acceptance andgenuine support for each school as they performed with greatenergy. This was certainly true for Forest Lake as we tookto the stage – eager, but with a touch of apprehension. Thisdoubt quickly eroded once the Cook Islander group begantheir performance. The African group followed with excitedscreaming and cheering from the audience, such was thequality of their dance. Our day culminated with high calibreperformances from the Samoan group, whose dance wasperformed with great complexity and dexterity. All Forest Lakegroups left the stage exhausted, but satisfied that they hadgiven it their all. Compliments flowed between all cultures asthey joined the audience ready to relax and enjoy the rest of theday.

The day was a great success on many fronts, particularly thestrengthening of relationships between schools and studentsfrom differing cultures, backgrounds, language groups andraces.

This day would not have been possible without the assistancefrom various members of the school and wider communities.A huge thanks to the many staff members who assisted invarious capacities and to the parents who provided transport.A special mention to the parents who sewed the wonderfulcostumes – they looked spectacular! Lastly to the studentsthemselves, especially the senior students who led, motivatedand encouraged the group to be the best they could be on theday – Malo and

well done!

Mental Health Expo – 20 October

Mental Health is a positive state of wellbeing used to describeemotional and social wellness. It involves feeling positive aboutourselves, the people and events in our lives, and being able tolive life to our fullest capacity.

On Thursday 20 October, students will hear from a numberof organisations regarding mental health and will also haveopportunities to participate in a number of activities. Therewill also be a sausage sizzles and prizes for students whoparticipate in those activities.

The World Health Organization defines mental health as “a stateof well-being in which every individual realises his or her ownpotential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can workproductively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution toher or his community.”

Our mental health influences everything we do:

Things to do to improve your mental health

• How we think, feel and behave

• The way we relate to other people

• The way we respond to the challenges of everydaylife; and

• How we cope with events such as changing jobs, having a baby, raising a child, relationship difficulties, retirement, loss and physical illness.

• Exercise daily – at least for 30 minutes

Mental health is an essential part of our overall health andaffects our physical health; as our physical health also affectsour mental health. It is also strongly related to our behaviour, particularly our social behaviour and relationships with others. So put the effort in and work to be mentally healthy.

We had a great response from staff and students alike. TheP&C served up a hot breakfast including bacon & egg burgersand pancakes to the Red Cross staff and all donating schoolstaff, students and parents.

Robyn, one of the nurses who staffed the mobile donor unit onthe Friday and who has been with the Blood Service now forover 15 years, said Friday “was the best and most organisedschool visit that she has ever worked at.” Well done to RedCross Ambassadors Anthony, Zach, Annika and Millie whorecruited donors for over three months before the donation dayand made the day run so smoothly.

Whilst we didn’t quite reach our goal to break the nationalrecord for donations, Australian Red Cross tells us that over132 lives were saved as a result of the generosity of people lastterm. Congratulations to everyone concerned.

Our next P&C meeting is on Tuesday, 25 October at 6:30pmand I hope you are able to make it. At our last P&C meeting,we agreed to the new uniform shop prices effective from thebeginning of this term. As we established the new prices, wewere very aware of the cost associated with ensuring ourstudents are meeting the uniform requirements and also veryaware of the need to ensure that we cover the costs associatedwith operating the uniform shop. Any surplus that is achievedfrom operating the uniform shop directly benefits the teachingand learning experiences of your child.

I am believing for a fruitful term this year, especially as the Year12s finalise their secondary education in a little over 5 weeks.
